We are new to list.
We found my husband Bob's birth family about
5 years ago. There is much the family doesn't
know so maybe some of you can help,
Henry F. Chrisman m. Georgian (Allen?) 20
July 1879 Williamson co. TN
Children
Wylie, Benjamin Franklin, Jim, Annabelle
I can share the family of Benjamin if this family
connects with anyone.
Thanks,
Joy, TN
Hi Margie,
I have not verified this info on Lavina that I am about to give to you. It was
published in the book, "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata
Valley, Comprising the Counties of Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, and Perry"
(pub in Chambersburg, PA in 1897).
You Lavinia's belongs to my husband's other Crisman line, which is the one that
goes back to J. George (the Saddler) Crissman/Crisman. Lavinia was a sister to
my husband's ancestor Elizabeth who married Thomas LONGWELL.
On p. 664 and p.667 the book is giving a biography of John M. Crissman, which
includes a run-down on all the children of his parents John Crissman and
Elizabeth ROTHROCK. It lists:
1. "Margaret (Mrs. Christopher Brown) who has 14 children"
2. "Adam, married Sarah Hudson, and has 5 children"
3. "George W. married Elizabeth Longwell and had 5 sons, his second wife is
Louise Wagner, they have 3 children"
4. "Lavinia (Mrs. Frederick Havice) has 14 children"
5. "Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Longwell) has 6 children"
6. "John M." (he is the main subject of this biography so lots of info on him;
he married Dec 29, 1857 Mary Jane Aikens, dau of William and Eliza (Close)
Aikens.
7. "Susanna, first Mrs. Thomas Aikens (sic), then Mrs. William H. Glass, now
deceased, had 2 children" (This info contradicted later in the book; Aitkens bio
says she was widow of W. H. Glass and then married Thomas Aitkens.)
8. "Lydia Ann, deceased"
9. "David, deceased"
10. "Mary, deceased"
On pp 646-649 it gives the biography of William J. Crissman of Lewistown who was
born in 1858 (son of John M.). His bio also lists the children of John and
Elizabeth (Rothrock) Crissman. It lists them in this order: 1.Adam, 2. George
W.,3. "Lavina, married Frederick Havice, a farmer of Armagh", 4. Margaret, 5.
Elizabeth, 6. John M., 7. Susannah "married W.H. Glass, a prominent educator and
a civil war veteran, member of the Grand Army of the Republic".
In the bio of the AITKENS family p. 648 it says: "Thomas, a farmer, married
Susannah Crissman, the widow of W. H. Glass."
Your Crisman line looks like this:
1. J. George Crissman (called The Saddler) was the immigrant.
2. Adam Crissman m. Margaret Stierle
3. John Crissman m. Elizabeth Rothrock ("born in Dauphin Co., daughter of a
prominent German family in that community". I have been unsuccessful in my
research for Elizabeth Rothrock's parents. It is possible that Elizabeth was a
middle name which she used or that this history book was wrong about her being
from Dauphin Co.
4. Lavinia Crissman m. Frederick Havice
This same book may have biographical info on the HAVICE families. I don't own
the book. Years ago I contacted the Mifflin Co Hist Soc and they selected 10
pages to copy and mail to me -- so there could be much more info in it than what
I received.
If someone on the Mifflin list or the Crisman list has this book, please let us
know.
Margie, do you go to SUTRO LIBRARY? They prob have this book. Let me know. I
used to live in RC and belonged to San Mateo Co Gen Society. From 1984-1997 I
"lived" at Sutro Library! Moved to rural mtns of NE Calif in 1997 (Lake Almanor)
which cramped my research a lot. Now I do genie on the Net or go to Salt Lake.
If you don't get to Sutro much, send me your address in Half Moon Bay and I will
send you copies of my copies from the book. I can also send you my group sheets
on this line. Group sheets may take awhile as I have not entered them into
Family Tree Maker yet.
I am posting this reply onto the Crisman list in case other list members are
interested in the Crissman/Crisman families of Mifflin Co PA or the line of J.
George (the Saddler) of Trappe, Montgomery Co., PA.
