Hello List,
Hopefully this one will arrive directly, without Cliff having to intervene!
Working from the Church of the Latter Day Saints transcriptions, in the 1851 Census there are 55 CHOWENs in Devon. (Note that the LDS only transcribed Devon, Norfolk and Warwickshire for 1851.)
They can be found at the following references:
(PRO Reference HO/107/xxxx;Folio;Page)
1878;162;6 (1 person)
1879;815;23 (8 people)
1879;831;54 (6 people)
1881;261;66 (4 people)
1883;128;7 (8 people)
1884;249;15 (1 person)
1884;301;11 (1 person)
1884;304;16 (2 people)
1884;305;19 (7 people)
1884;305;19 (1 person) (Actually same household, but listed as servant, not relation)
1884;329;16 (1 person)
1884;331;20 (1 person)
1884;332;22 (1 person)
1884;332;22 (2 people) (Very close to the previous, Lew Cottage rather than Lew Rectory in Lewtranchard, Tavistock)
1884;356;12 (3 people)
1884;372;2 (1 person)
1884;378;23 (1 person)
1885;266;18 (4 people)
1885;338;7 (1 person)
1896;134;17 (1 person)
In addition, there was someone with Chowen as a middle name, at:
1884;298;4
Quite a few of these appear to be closely related to "our" Chowens, but I'll post my own transcriptions from the microfilms rather than pirating the LDS work.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi List
The records I have listed show that "Thomas" Chowen - (b. 1773 d. 06
Jul 1838) married Patience Rose (b. 06 Feb 1780 d. 30 Sep 1842). They had
13 children, as follows:
Thomas 1797 - 1896 Age in 1841 = 44
William 1800 - 1865 Age in 1841 = 41
John 1802 - ???? Age in 1841 = 39
Elizabeth 1804 - ???? Age in 1841 = 37
Joanna 1806 - ???? Age in 1841 = 35
Mary Ann 1808 - 1873 Age in 1841 = 33
Henry 1810 - 1819 died young
Agnes 1812 - ???? Age in 1841 = 29
Susanna 1814 - 1868 Age in 1841 = 27
Richard 1817 - 1884 Age in 1841 = 24 ****
Patience 1820 - ???? Age in 1841 = 21
Henry 1822 - ???? Age in 1841 = 19
George 1825 - 1902 Age in 1841 = 16
The mother, Patience was 61 in 1841, Thomas had passed away in 1838, so
it is very likely the record below is for that of the remaining family of
our "Thomas". His son, "Richard" who was still living at home with (and
supporting) his mother.
There is a difference in the age I have recorded for Richard and that
recorded on the census record, however, they are most likely one and the
same individual in this case.
I believe that Thomas, William, and Richard came to Ontario, Canada with
their families in 1845 ... Henry came to Prince Edward Island, Canada with
his family the same year.
I agree with Peter that his record below represents our (his and my)
common ancestor
Anyone with any other comments ?
Cliff Williamson.

Hello List
The records that I have show "William" Chowen as the progenitor for
many of the Chowen Surname in Canada and the USA today.
"William" was born 18 January 1800. He married Patience Cundy on 21
April 1824 (she born 18 May 1801) and they had "8" children as follows:
John 19 Jul 1825 Aged 16 in 1841 #*****
Grace 03 Mar 1827 Aged 14 in 1841
Henry 14 Mar 1829 Aged 12 in 1841 *****
James 10 May 1832 Aged 09 in 1841
Maria 06 Jul 1834 Aged 07 in 1841
Susanna 08 Sep 1836 Aged 05 in 1841
Wilmot 01 Jan 1840 Aged 01 in 1841
George 02 Jun 1843 not born yet in 1841
#***** John will likely be found elsewhere in the 1841 census
as he was no doubt "employed" away from home on census day.
***** No immediate explanation as to why Henry was not
listed with this family, unless he too, at age 12 was employed in another
household on census day.
Overall the census record (page 10 Dist #7) below - transcribed
by Peter Dauncey - seems to be that of our "William" and his family as it
was on census day in 1841.
The next record (page 11 Dist #7) does not tie in with any of
the records that I have. Still searching.
Thanks to Peter for supplying us with these records.
Cliff Williamson
