when male descendants of a blood line are given the same first and middle names can they be labeled first, second, third, etc. according to birthdates even if the sir names are different ??? i.e. Can a daughter name her son after her father and call the new son a 2nd even though the new son's last name will be different ?

Judy,
I believe the only time titles such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd Sr. Jr. etc. are used is when the Surname is the same and goes down through a direct line. Namesakes (i.e. nephews, cousins) with the same surname do not use titles.
With females, Jr. is used when the first, middle and last name are the same as the mother's name.

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone on the list know who Emanuel Choate (aka Emanuel Shoat/Manuel Shoat) who is found on the 1830 Grainger County, Tennessee connects to? In 1840 and 1850 Emanuel is living in McMinn County, Tennessee.
>From the 1850 census, he is listed with his wife Jane (--?--) and children Sarah, Freeland and Jane. Another son, Iredell is living in his own household. In 1840 there is another male listed between the age of 5-10 and one 10-15 and a daughter age 5 and under 10 that I have not been able to name.
>From Ms. Williams book "Choates of the South" it appears that her thinking was that this Emanuel was the same as the Emanuel who was involved with the battle of Kings Mountain and Point Pleasant. This couldn't be since the McMinn County Emanuel was only 57 in 1850 which gives him a birth year of about 1793.
I have seen on-line trees which states that Emanuel of 1850 died in Arkansas but I have not been able to place him and his wife outside of McMinn County, Tennessee.
Any help with this is appreciated?
