I am not sure if I have the right address here. I saw that "Mark" has made
mention of "Pap" I am assuming you meant Pap Choate. If this is true, please
contact me. I would like to know how you are related to him. And what you might
be willing to share. Samuel "Pap" Choate was my G Grandfather and came from
Dickson Co. TN. I know that my Choate's were also in Sumner, Robertson,
Jackson and I think Monroe counties as well. My G grandmother's name was
Cathrine/Kathrine (Cassie) Silcox Choate. I have been looking for anyone you knows of
Pap. That is what my grandmother called him all my life. Of course I never
met him, but her parents and grandparents were mentioned frequently during my
growing up. If we are referring to the same Pap, please let me know.
Thanks, Pamn
I am Hoping!!!!

I have been tracking the family of Richard Choate b. bet. 1801-1804 in North Carolina.
I have seen that one of his sons is always named as Joshua Sabret Choate but I have run into something that makes me wonder.
On the 1850 census he is named as Sabrit, 1870 he is Joshua and in 1880 he is Sowel. I am still looking for them on the 1860 census.
Does anyone know what Joshua's true name is?
Berlene
Thanks
I will add this to my files
Uncle Marvin told lots of stories, which now I wish I had written down. Very glad to know that some of them have been published for other researchers.

Traditional Incidents, as told by Marvin Choate (now deceased) of Dickson Co., Tennessee, who was a descendant of this Thomas. Marvin stated that this story has been handed down through the Generations.
Taken from the book: "Choataes of the South - Descendants of Christopher Choate of Maryland - Volume I" by Irene Choate Williams 1983.
At the time of the American Revolution it was usual in the 'colonies' for the inhabitants to live in what was termed 'settlement'. This was mainly for protective reasons. Some settlers 'pioneered' ahead westward.
In the Colony of South Carolina, THOMAS CHOATE and his wife ELIZABETH KEITH CHOATE were living a few miles outside of the settlement in what was known as the 'wilderness' region. Tories were prevalent in the colonies, and on a certain day, three of them appeared at the cabin home of THOMAS and ELIZABETH CHOATE with the intention of persuading or forcing him to turn his allegiance from the colonial cause back to the England side. Being of intense and loyal faith to his home and colony, he defiantly refused, whereupon he was promptly shot and killed by the Tories. Later two of the Tories began to dispute and quarrel with each other, so leveling their guns at each other, they fired simultaneously and each were killed.
This left ELIZABETH CHOAT and the remaining Tory standing with the three dead men lying at their feet. Her traditional words were "The Tory looked at her, then at the three dead men, and then looked like a fool, and then walked away", leaving her standing there with the three dead men lying at her feet.
After THOMAS CHOATE was killed by the Tories, his family continued to live at their home outside the 'settlement'. Indians were a source of danger and fear for the colonists at this time, especially to those who sought to live away from the 'settlement.
Warning of an Indian raid came one day while ELIZABETH CHOATE was weaving cloth to make clothing for her children. They left hurriedly for the 'settlement' leaving their home and belongings to the mercies of the Indians. When the danger was passed, she felt it her duty to return and investigate the results of the raid. She prepared food for her and one of her sons, who was armed with a shotgun, and returned to the cabin home which had luckily escaped destruction. While the son stood guard outside the house and watched for any sign of danger, she wove cloth, never stopping for two days and nights, except to eat of the food they had brought. Upon completion of the web of cloth, she cut it from the loom and they hurriedly and safely returned to the 'settlement'.
(NOTE: This story has been handed down by MARVIN CHOATE of Dickson Co, TN, a descendant of this THOMAS CHOATE
THOMAS CHOATE died before 24 Nov 1778 when Ann CHOATEqualified as administratrix, with Elij Smith, James Hollis & Robert Sevier as her security. (Washington Tn Co Court Minutes 1/51) 6 May 1783 a release was given from Austin CHOATEto Squire Smith, Sarah Smith, John Smith, Thomas Smith, of his right Title claim and demand unto the estate of THOMAS CHOATE, proven by Emanuel CARTER, Ezekiel SMITH and William COCKE, Esq. (ibid)
The widow of Thomas CHOATE is listed in records of Washington Co, TN in 1778 and later in records of Robertson Co, TN, where THOMAS CHOATE also appears.
South Carolina Archives Vol 24, Pg 266 Recorded land plat, Laurens Co., SC laid out plat for Elizabeth CHOATE, surveyed for her 16 Aug 1785, 96th District of Branch of Riburns Creek 30 Mar 1789.

Joe,
I have wondered that myself, but have not been able to prove it.
I have a book, "The Patriots at Kings Mountain", by Bobby G. Moss, that lists a Thomas (Shoate) Shote as an ensign under Capt. Andrew Colvill and Col. Campbell, in the Battle of Kings Mountain. It is also recorded in, "The History of Southwest Virginia." It all fits quite well with the handed-down story that uncle Marvin told us. Also, Francis Marion worked heavily in the District 96 area of S.C. for a good period of the war.
When the movie, "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson, came out, I thought often of old Thomas as it depicted the strife between the Tories and the Patriots in South Carolina very well.

Thanks for your quick information. It appears that your Greenbury Choate would be grandfather to Green B Choate, who is under speculation to be twin to Green A Choate (my Green Anderson Choate)... but I can find no documentation. Maybe someone has family information?

Mara.. Does your large data base on Johnson Co IL contain any info on Greenberry Choate, or of his daughter Nancy who married Ezekiel Smith. Greenberry and Ezekiel were in the area of Big Creek which was in Johnson Co before 1810 census, but now in Pope CO. They and others named Choate and Levi Casey shown in 1810 Census Randolph CO IL. Thanks for any help... Bill

I have been diligently searching for parents of Green Anderson Choate, born in Gallatin Co, IL and appearing in Indep Co , AR in the late 1820's. Some have speculated that he was a twin of Greenberry Choate (Squire Choate and Mary Polly Casey), but apparently this is only conjecture. Can anyone help here?

Inauguration '09: Get complete coverage from the nation's capital.
If Thomas was at Kings Mountain then his hanging may have been a revenge killing as the 8 of the Tories where hung after the battle.

Joe,
I have wondered that myself, but have not been able to prove it.

HI Mark heard that story from Uncle Marvin as well, but never saw anything to back it up. He also told me about Thomas being hanged by the Tories. I would not be surprised by the Swamp Fox connection or even of a more direct link. Would Thomas have been one of the Fox's rangers? Joe Matlock Joe W. I,too, discovered the "Shawnee Heritage" book mentioned in recent Ch oate Digest newsletters. My Choate ancestors are not related to native Americans, that I know of, but I do have some Elliott's that are, and they are in the book. I have exchanged e-mail with Don Greene and he doesn't seem to have the faintest idea where any documentation might be found for his connections and suggestions and postulations. He hasn't been able to find his references. He did say that he used Emmett Starr's book extensively and that he "cobbled" together with other information. There is a list you can find on line about the battle of Point Pleasant and the 1808 Osage Treaty and two of the fighters were Emanuel Shoatt (sic) and James Sanders (one of Samuel Sanders son). If anyone has family who were the earliest settlers of the Virginia Kanawha Valley, this is a good source for finding family names.
