Moses L. Choate (1794-1867)
Regarding the information below: I am a direct descendant of Moses L. Choate - the one referenced below as William Moses
Livingston Choate, and have been working on his history for several years now. Most of the information you have about him
is widely distributed, but is incorrect. I've often seen the same errors repeated, but here's what my research has uncovered.
1. Although the 1850 Polk Co, TX, census does list his name as something that could be read "William,"
I have never seen any other place where he used that name. There were other errors for that household on the census as well,
and several amateur genealogists have taken the info and propagated it without verifying it.
It appears there was a William Moses Choate in the same area, but he was younger. Moses usually signed his
name "M. L. Choate" but occasionally signed it "Moses L. Choate." He is "Moises L. Choate" (the Spanish spelling)
in the 1834 land grant he received from the Mexican government. The birthdate you have for him is essentially correct, but
he died in 1867 in Livingston, Polk Co, TX, and is presumed buried in the Old City Cemetery there. There is a state
historical marker for him in the cemetery, as he donated 100 acres of his Mexican land grant to establish the city of
Livingston as Polk County's county seat. Two of John and Elizabeth Choate English's children are buried there as well.
2. I have never seen any documentation on a marriage to Prudy. She ended up married to Moses' half brother (?),
Stockley. However, Moses may have been the father of Prudy's oldest child. Moses L. married Ursula Cook in 1826 in
Livingston Co, KY, and they were in Texas by 1832 with the first of their children.
3. There is no proof of which I'm aware of Moses L.'s parentage. One Texas researcher thinks he was the child of
one Isaac Choate and Isaac's third wife. There were several Moses Choates about the same age, and years ago some folks
managed to get them hopelessly mixed up. This is just my little part to try and eliminate some of the errors.
Happy researching, Jane Caperton Johnson, Austin, TX

tried to check it's accuracy.
Christopher III Choate, born 1/1/1750 Va and died after 1837 McNairy Co.,
TN? He was married to Sally. They had children:
7.) William Moses Livingston Choate, born 1794 TN and died before 1822 TN.
He married Prudence Dora "Prudy" Choate, about 1820 Maury or Lawrence Co.,

Choate and his wife Elizabeth Renfro of Lawrence Co., TN)* Thomas Kyle
Choate and Sarah Choate Hollis were sister and brother and the children of
Thomas and Elizabeth Keith Choate of VA. This Thomas was killed by the
"Tories" 1778.... he was a brother to Christopher Choate III......
8.) Elizabeth Choate, born 1/5/1807 TN and died 1/30/1857 Houston Co., TX.
