hi,
This David was my 4gr grandfather. I have him born 1775. I do not have a
death date for him. I also have James, my 3 gr grandfather born 1804. I would
go for the 2 David's theory that Barbara pointed to. Also, as Barbara
cautioned...I got my info off of the net and have not proven it myself. bjheller

In the process of trying to blend some files I have really made a confused mess. Could somebody please clarify which of the many Christopher's was married to which of the numerous Prudence's. thank you
I found these listings in the Johnson County Historical Society Journal.
Included on the Johnson County, Arkansas 1834 Tax List were Austin Choate and
Champion Choate. On their 1835 Tax List were Austen Choate, Champin Choate, and
Gabriel Choate.
Hope this helps someone!
Hi Janet
I don't know which Mary but Thomas and Elizabeth Ann are very well
known...Robert Sevier is John Sevier's (another jail breaker) brother.
David Choate b 1780 married a Judith Sevier..this David is a cousin to
the bunch listed below (or a best we can tell as our southern Proctor
relations are not gifted with the second sight). As for Isaac he latter
stole Tory horses and was honorably discharged and I believe drew a
pension for his "good works:..

Descendants of Christopher Choate
Generation No. 1
1. CHRISTOPHER5 CHOATE (CHRISTOPHER41) was born 12 August 1720 in
"Choate's Fancy", St. Pauls Parish, Baltimore, Baltimore County,
Maryland, and died Bet. 1790 - 1810 in Washington County, Tennessee. He
married PRUDENCE STALEY Abt. 1749 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Notes for CHRISTOPHER CHOATE:
In 1749 this family was living in Lunenburg County, Virginia.
Christopher III married Prudence who was a Cherokee Indian. He received
land upon the death of his brother Austin also know as Augustine. He and
the other brothers moved to Lundenburg- - later as Pittsylvania Co., VA
about 1745 where his Uncle Edward and sons joined them about 1754. They
were apparently very prolific tribe and began populating that county and
on East into what is now East Tennessee until it became difficult to
distinguish the same names handed down by different ones.
It is agreed by most researchers that Christopher III and Prudence had
(at least) the sons I have listed. Sons David and Isaac were accused and
convicted horse thiefs. David went bond and skipped, Isaac was sentenced
to die but escaped. Both men served in the Revolutionary War as army
scouts and the country was in turmoil. More sons were attributed to
Chrisopher III; some may have been his brother Richard's.

It is agreed by most researchers that Christopher II and Prudence had
(at least the sons I listed. Sons David and Isaac were accused and
convicted horse thieves. David went bond and skipped, Isaac was
sentenced to die, but escaped. Both men served in the Revolutionary War
and the country was in turmoil. More sons were attributed to
Christopher III; some may have been his brother Richard's of which there
is no record. ICW.
When the Choate's moved to Virginia, there was no government buildings,
so the churches kept all the birth, marriage, death and tax records.
Taxes at that time were referred to as "Tithes." When taxes were
assessed, each adult male had to turn in a certain number of wolf,
squirrel and bear skins. If they met their quota they were not required
to apy an additional amount of money and their "Tithable" amount was 1.
If they did not meet the quota they were levied accordingly.
I have children listed as : Austin, Squire Thomas, Edward, Christopher,
John Charles, David, Moses, Isaac, Delilah, and Aaron
Notes for PRUDENCE STALEY:
Family story is that "Prudence" was a full blooded Cherokee. Janet Lee
Baugh Hunter says that Prudence was a full-blood Cherokee.
Sid Cox says that she was a Cherokee and that Christopher's brother,
Thomas (WHO is this JWM??), was married to Prudence's sister, Ann. -Joy
Barnett research)
Children of CHRISTOPHER CHOATE and PRUDENCE STALEY are:
i. EDWARD6 CHOATE, b. 1742; d. 1829, Robertson County, Tennessee; m.
(1) ELIZABETH HAWKINS; m. (2) SARAH HOUSE AXUM, 1812.
Notes for EDWARD CHOATE:
Christopher I's son Edward was the owner of the property know as
"Choate's Delight". Edward obtained a warrant for fifty acres of land
and at the same time got an assignment for another 50 acres out of a
tract of two hundred fifty acres held by Richard Gist. This tract of one
hundred acres Edward named Choate's Delight. for reasons unclear, a
patent was not granted until November 5th, 1731 in which the tract is
descibed as lying in Baltimore Co." on the south end of a ridge and on
the northeaast side of a run descending into Jones
Falls known by the name of "North Run" (see MD Pat. Rec. Vol. PL #8, pp.
255-56 MHR). The Baltimore City Atlas of 1877 shows this location to be
in the 3rd District about one half mile north of Stevenson.
ii. AUSTIN CHOATE, b. Abt. 1745, Lunenburg, Pittsylvania County,
Virginia; d. Bet. 1810 - 1820, Jackson County, Tennessee; m. ELIZABETH
NAOMI OMA PYBURN, Abt. 1774, Lunenburg, Virginia; b. 1753.
Notes for ELIZABETH NAOMI OMA PYBURN:
Family history is that Elizabeth is a full blood Cherokee.
iii. SQUIRE THOMAS CHOATE, b. Abt. 1747, Lunenburg, Virginia; d. Bef.
24 November 1778, Washington County, Tennessee. He was executed by
Tories at Fort Dinwiddie during the American Revoluion; m. ELIZABETH ANN
KIETH, Abt. 1768, Virginia; b. Abt. 1750, Virginia; d. Aft. 1785,
Laurens, Soutn Carolina.
Notes for ELIZABETH ANN KIETH:
After Squire Thomas Choate was killed by Tories, his family continued to
live at their home outside the "Settlement" in South Carolina. Indians
were a source of danger and fear for the colonists at this time,
especially to those who sought to live away from the "settlement"
Warning of an Indian raid came one day while Elizabeth Choate was
weaving cloth to make clothing for her children. Thet left hurriedly for
the "settlement" leaving their home and belongings to the mercies of the
Indians. When the danger was passed, she felt it her duty to return and
investigate the results of the raid. She prepared food for her and one
of her sons, who was armed with a shotgun, and returned to the cabin
home which had luckily escaped destruction. While the son stood guard
outside the house and watched for any sign of danger, she wove cloth,
never stopping for two days and nights except to eat of the food they
had brought. Upon completion of the web of cloth, she cut it from the
loom and they hurriedly and safely returned to the settlement.
S.C. Archives Vol 24, Pg 266 Recorded land plats, Laurens Co laid out
plat for Elizabeth Choate, surveyed for her 16 Aug 1785, 96th District
on branch of Riburns Creek 30 Mar 1789.
Is she the Cherokee, Ann, that Sid Cox claimed she was? If so, after
Thomas was killed she and her children moved in with Christopher and
Prudence and lived with them until her death about 1828.

Court case (from Paula at Rootsweb Choate List):
JUDITH HOLSTEIN vs DAVID CHOAT
She represents that a certain David Choat has carried off her daughter,
wife of Thomas Holms, and the child of said Holmes has also been carried
off by said David Choat and her daughter. Said Choat is a man of
infamous conduct in other respects, having stolen horses in the Province
of Cumberland. She prays that consideration for the mother of a family
and order that said Choat desist from having intercourse and all
connection with her daughter and that the child of said daughter may be
placed under the care and protection of your petitioner.
signed Judith Holstein
In consequence of the above statement, the Constable was ordered to
bring David Choat and Mrs. Holmes to the fort and place the child of
Mrs. Holmes in the hands of the petitioner.

Revolutionary War Pay Voucher #2384 State of North Carolina.
Isaac was charged for stealing horses in August 1784 in Washington
County, Tennessee. "He threw himself on the mercy of the court". Sid Cox
said, "But we must remember some things. For eight years the nation had
been at war with England. The Choates and other patriots in that part of
the country were living amongst many English-sympathizing Americans who
would betray them to the enemy if they had a chance. It was a time of
lawlessness when the two sides fought each other and appropriated each
other's property as enemies. I suspect that our kinsman regarded
stealing the horses as evening up the score with some Tory who had done
him, or his kinsmen, wrong. History does show that the jjudge who
sentenced him to death was a highhanded man much hated by the people of
the county and that the jury that tried Isaac recommended leniency. My
guess is that the Choates took the Washington County jailhouse apart and
sent Isaac off to some of the kinfolks. The Choates had been in
Washington and Sullivan Counties for a long time, and very shortly after
this they began to sell out and go elsewhere."
