I don't find a direct fit with my Choate ancestor in the court case, but
it's nonetheless interesting. My ggggg grandmother was Vesta Zipporah
Choate b. 1767/1769 in Montgomery County, Virginia d. about 1851 in Anderson
County, Tennessee, m. John England about 1783 in Montgomery County,
Virginia. I don't know who Vesta Zipporah Choate's parents were and her
children carried the England surname, so she is the only ancestor I have
proven who has the Choate surname.
The interest in the Fentress County court case is that a lot of Anderson
County folks moved to Fentress County, Tennessee in the late 1870's and on
up into the 1880's. For example, there were a lot of Peters and Englands
who moved to Fentress County from Anderson County. So I wonder if the James
Choate in the Fentress County lawsuit was similarly from Anderson County
originally. And if so, I wonder if he was connected to the family of Vesta
Zipporah Choate.
By the way, I suspect that Vesta Zipporah Choate was the daughter of a
Christopher Choate who appeared on early Anderson County tax lists, and that
Zipporah's possible father Christopher in turn was descended from an earlier
Christopher Choate who immigrated from England to Maryland and died in 1692.
But these suspicions are certainly not proven.

I am not familiar with any of these folks, as my Choates were from Franklin
Co. VA>Robertson/Davidson Co. TN ca 1806>Ozarks Mo (Dade Co.).
I hope it is of interest to someone.
