Does anyone know of this Harriet Choat who was raised with the Riddle
family? I'm trying to figure out who Grandfather Choat was and Harriet's
mothers name.
Harriet was born in Kentucky. Her mother was a part Indian. Her mother
could not raise her so her Grandfather gave her to her Aunt Elizabeth Ellen
Choat Riddle and Uncle William Riddle to raise.
She married Canady Holmes 18 December 1837 in Wayne Co., KY. They lived on
a river boat traveling along the Tennessee River, Mississippi River and
Arkansas River, until Canady death and then Harriet moved to Charleston,
Township Six, in Franklin Co Ark and then later to Texas to be with family.
Their children were:
Mary Elizabeth. Holmes
Shelby C. Holmes
Jasper Newton Holmes
John C. Holmes
William Holmes
Augustus Burton Holmes
She lived with her youngest son, Hayden Leo from approximately 1877 until
her death in 1904. Harriet's grave is located in Jacksboro, Texas (Graves
Cemetery) The family she left behind moved west because of the pressure on
Indians and having Indians in their family. I believe they ended up in Texas
and this is who Harriet moved to be near, but that is just a guess.
I hope this fits in with someone's family.

In the cemetery in Stockbridge , MA there is a very interesting lot. It
contains the graves of a prominent family with the father and mother buried
in the center, the children in a circle around the parents, then the next
circle is the grandchildren, and so on. The idea was that when Judgement
day arrives, they will all rise and see only the members of their family --
and God. There are many graves there. It is called a PIE
Several years ago I was in that cemetery looking for the grave of Joseph
Hodges Choate. His Stockbridge home 'Naumkeag" is now the property of the
Trustees of Reservations and is open to the public, and is within view of
the cemetery. I ask directions to the Choate graves from a man and he
said, " You realize this is a Pie Lot, don't you?" and told me that
because the Choates admired the large lot, they wanted to be buried in the
same way. They were the parents of 5 children, but two of them died when
quite young, and one never married so this is a small "pie". It is just
one large circle, but there is a hedge all around the lot , so it is quite
private. When they rise up, I think they will be able to see their home on
the hill just behind them.
It depends on which branch of Choates you belong to, Tara. The Southern branch has
tons of stories, if you dared print them *S*

Hello List,
I have really enjoyed reading all the postings lately. My grandfather was Herman Choate. My great grandfather was John W. Choate. My great great grandfather was Andrew Jackson Choate. And my great great great grandfather was Ceborn, Seaborn Choate of Trigg County, Ky. I have had a lot of problems tracking Andrew Jackson Choate because he went by the name John instead of Jack. I wish I knew why. I know that John (Jack) Choate and his family moved from Trigg County to Montgomery County, Tenn. and they were there in the 1880s. They then moved back to Kentucky, settling in Christian County. I have never been able to find a marriage license for my grandfather, Herman Choate. He married Mary Jones probably sometime in the 1920s If anyone has run across this marriage license please let me know where you located it. I found a Herman Choate that married a Irene Byrd in Christian County in the 1930s. But unfortunately it was not my Herman Choate. I am also looking for in!
formation on Ambie (Amla) Choate. She was my great grandfather's sister. He had other sisters as well. If anyone is interested in this line of Choates just let me know.

Dear List,
The cemetery records in the previous post is the family of James
Simeral and Catherine S. Iles Choate. James was the son of William and
Rachel Simeral Choate. William was the son of Augustine, and Augustine was
the son of Richard Choate, born 11/8/1722 and died in Sullivan Co., TN. I
have a bit of information on this line if anyone needs me to share.

I found this information in Lawrence Co, Goodspeed's
History of Tennessee. I hope someone can use it.
Choate, T. J. was born the 27th of February, 1831, in
Maury County, Tenn., son of Richard and Martha
(McMackin) Choate, who came from East Tennessee to
Maury County at an early day. Both parents are
deceased. Our subject was reared in Lawrence County
and received limited early education in his childhood
days. Since that he has gained a fair education by
careful observation and study. After attaining his
majority he began doing for himself, working as
mechanic, and now owns what is known as the Fall River
Wool Factory, which he successfully operates. In
connection with this he owns and farms 242 acres of
land. He was elected magistrate in 1882, and still
serves in that capacity. He is a Democrat, and a
member in good standing in the Methodist Episcopal
Church. In 1856 he took for his companion through life
Eliza J. Morgan, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Bird)
Morgan, and their union was blessed in the birth of
eight children: Mary Ellen, Charles A., John Rufus,
Nancy, Daniel R., Ella T., James T. and Andrew Lee.
Mary Ellen deceased.

My great great grandfather was Silas Choate. Everything I've read shows
that Silas and Sanders were brothers and possibly the sons of Mose
Choate. But I read some information about nicknames just a few days
ago. Mose is a nickname for Amos. The Choate name has been spelled
many different ways; so Mose and Amos might be spelled in different
ways. Nancy Choate, Silas Choate's daughter is my line Let me know
what you think.
