Hi Joan,
Gabriel is mine. His wife is Lucy Webb. For info, I've posted at genforum:
Choate:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?janet::choate::811.html
I am pasting this in below, but you should also read the followups to it.
and Webb:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?choate::webb::5484.html
Here's what I have...do you have a connection? Janet Hunter read on
Fellow Southern Choate Researchers:
I believe that my Choate line is as follows and would like to hear anyone's
thoughts, especially with respect to the accompanying questions for the two
Edwards and Gabriel.
1. Edward Choate, , d. ca. 1815, Robertson Co TN (?), estate administered by
Ned Choate (Edward Sr. in court records??) per Letter of Administration
granted 2nd Monday, May 1815. David LUCAS Security.
Questions: (a) Is this Edward who died ca 1815 the Edward various genealogies
have in VA first with wife Elizabeth Hawkins; or just who was his wife and is
there a marriage record or deed somewhere attesting to the relationship?; (b)
Are there any subsequent court records on administration of the estate? (FYI,
I have Irene Choate's Book and she doesn't have anything); AND
(c) Who were his parents -- has anyone traced this Edward d. ca 1815 in
Robertson Co TN back to Christopher Choate the immigrant on the Cecilius in
1676, Anne Arundel Co. MD??
2. Edward (Ned) Choate, II (Sr), d. ca 1829, Robertson Co TN (date of will),
will presented at court November 1831. He names wife Sarah Choate (maiden
name House, widow of an Axum as I understand it). He names children (James)
Wesley, Gabriel, Skelton, Gideon, Sebert (Seaborn),Betsy SIMMONS, Charity
METLOCK, Cassy SIMMONS,& Sally Choat. Edward Choate, Jr. is not named but
appears to be a witness. His estate was quite sizeable.
Questions: (a) Can we be reasonably sure this Edward d. ca 1829 is the son of
Edward who died around 1815?;
(b)Who was the mother of son Gabriel? I don't have the date handy, but I
think Edward married Sally (House) Axum around 1812 after Gabriel reached
adulthood. One source told me it was Elizabeth Chowning, who is named
Elizabeth Choate in father John Chowning's 1808 Deed of Gift in Robertson Co.
But I traced this John Chowning back in Payne family records and she would
have been too young to be Gabriel's mother. Another source just has "Nancy"
for his wife. I imagine the answer lies back in VA in deeds or other court
records, since these Choate fellows, which we know abound in great numbers,
don't appear in Virginia to have had many wills, or recorded marriages.
3. Gabriel Choate, d. 1845, Robertson Co TN. Names wife Lucy, and children
Nancy Choate, Martha Jane TUCKER, Josiah, Powhatan, Valentine, Stepto, and
two unnamed daughters. One I believe is Cathy who married John Ed SIMMONS,
because Powhatan raised their son POwell Hatten Simmons in Dade Co MO.
Powhatan & Stepto to be executors, but only Stepto actually performs the
duties. Powhatan & Josiah are in Davidson co TN 1850 census, so they may have
been gone already. Gabriel (despite the impression given by some of his
biographies), which have him in Yell Co AR in 1850, is in the Dade Co MO
census for 1850, with wife Jane Brewer and children.
Question: Is this Gabriel the Gabriel Choate who marries Leusy WEBB, January
6,
1804, Stokes Co NC, James BYRD, Edward WEBB, Noah SEALY bondesmen; Charles
BEASLEY, witness. Beasley researchers have Charles traced to Henry Co area of
VA.
4. Powhatan Choate and wife Winney (probably Haley, Hailey)are my ggg
grandparents. They lived around Lockwood, Dade Co MO. I descend through their
daughter Lucinda Choate who married Henry P. BIRD, daughter of John Bird and
Nancy COUTS, who are believed to have lived in Robertson Co TN, but Bird
researchers are having a devil of a time sorting the TN Bird/Byrds out. Nancy
is in Dade Co in 1850 census, but John has already died (??)
The Choate/Byrd connection goes back to the early 1800s in Robertson Co TN,
then across to East Tennessee, they are together in Pittsylvania Co VA in the
1750s, James Byrd is involved in the Stokes Co NC marriage, etc.
Look forward to hearing from any of you.
Best Regards,
Janet Hunter, jleehunt1(a)aol.com
Dear Choate Researchers,
I am interested in learning more about the Gabriel Choate who was assigned land in Robertson County, Tenn in 1822. He was an assignee of Thomas Rose.
Where was Gabriel Choate from & did he have any other Rose connections that you know of?
Did Gabriel have other relatives in the Robertson County area? Who were his wife, kids? Any help appreciated.
Thanks. Joan Rose jmrh(a)midwest.net

The book "The Choates in America" shows that Simeon Choate (1748-1829)
was the father of Benjamin Choate (1770-1854). Simeon Choate was born
in Rockingham County, NH, and died in either Hillsbrough or Rockingham
Co., NH. Benjamin Choate was born in Merrimack Co, MA, and died in
Essex Co., MA.
Does anyone have any HARD evidence of this relationship (i.e. Wills,
land documents, church records, birth records, town records, etc.)??
Thank you very much for your help.
Sincerely,
Tom Chilton
I haven't written for a while. I have found out more information on Joseph Choate (b. circa 1769 - died by 1850 Shelby Co., Tenn., married Jane/Jennie Knox). Per his will he had 2 sons: James Choate (perhaps born circa 1810), S. Boone Choate (perhaps Squire was his first name for his Choate grandfather )- maybe born about 1810 also, and daughters: Judah (married James Vaughan), Nancy (married John Bland & deceased by 1848), Lucy D. (married John Simpson), Lucretia D. (married Joseph Willett) and Eliza Jane (married Thomas Cole).
I am seeking information on any and all of these kids. Where did they live, die, etc.? Any information appreciated.
Thanks. Joan Rose jmrh(a)midwest.net
Sue: The Choates are one of my main lines of descent. I am away from my
information at the present but will look up and see if I have the
information you are inquiring about. There are a few Seibert's( Sebert )
also Sally and Oma ( Naomi ) Choates and they were in Texas. Will get
back to the board or will respond directly to you if that is okay.
Hello List,
I am a brand new member, and I have a brick wall question. My husband's
gggrandparents were Sally (Sarah) Choat and E. J. (Elias) Fisher. I first
obtained their names from husband's ggrandfather's (Joseph F. Fisher) death
certificate. There, they were listed as Elias Fisher and Sarah Choat. The
only other piece of information I found was on Texas Marriages before 1850.
There, if found that Sally Choat married E. J. Fisher on December 25, 1848 in
Harrison County, TX. I have no idea where either of them came from or who
they belonged it. I cannot find them anywhere on the 1850 Census. Sarah and
Elias are supposed to have had five children: Joseph F. (b. 1853, d. 1918),
Seibert, Betty, Polly, and Oma. Soon after, Elias left or died and Sarah
remarried a Mr. Crow (possibly not the right name) and had twin boys: David
and Daniel. Joseph F. married Lydia S. Dennis of Lamar County, TX. He had a
connection with saw mills and also owned and operated cargo steamboats on Red
River and connecting rivers and bayous in Louisiana. I only know that
Seibert was married to someone named Dolly -- I have a picture of them that
gives this information.
Another question, in researching steamboats and riverboats, I found a Thomas
Choat, who was a steamboat captain on the Mississippi. Has anyone ever heard
of him??? Possibly after he lost his dad (Elias Fisher), Joseph learned
boating from a relative of his mom -- Sally (Sarah) Choat Fisher.
I certainly would appreciate ANY information or ideas anyone can offer!
Sue Fisher
In regards to the to Choate men that were Sheriffs of Newton Co.
Missouri. The J. K. Choate is John K. Choate and the A. C. Choate is
Aaron Crockett Choate. The two were brothers. These two men are in my
genealogy search and are my 2nd cousins 4 times removed. Thought I
would throw that in for what is is worth.
To Choate, Byrd & Harrell researchers:
Being as how all of these surname lists have slowed down for the August
summer doldrums, I thought I'd pass on the following post on sheriffs on
Newton Co MO. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about any of these gents. I receive
all posts with "Byrd" in them and this one turned up.
I hope this helps someone.
Best Regards, Janet Hunter

Subject: [MONEWTON] Request for information about early Sheriffs of Newton
County
Hi!
My name is Karen Scott. I'm married to Randy Scott, who is quite active on
this list, and am also the editor of the "Newton County Roots", our local
genealogy society newsletter. I'm currently working on an article for Roots
(and, perhaps later, a book) about the early sheriffs of Newton County. I'm
posting this message as a request for information/material about these
gentlemen from list members. If anyone has family history information they
would be willing to submit for possible inclusion in the article/book, I
would be thrilled to have it (and would give credit to the submitter)!
The following is the list of early Sheriffs as complete as I have it from
the MO State Hx Society and the local Goodspeeds:
1839 Gibson, Isaac
1845 Newton, Elbert C.
1846 McKaskle, A.B.
1849 Hearrell, Samuel
1850 & 1852 Crouch, Milner F.
1854 Jennings, Henderson
1858 Choate, J.K.
1861 Johnson, M.R.
1862 Keller, R.V.
1863 & 1864 Boyd, William M. (appointed Sept. 28, 1863)
1863 Reagan, Charles (supposedly appointed Sept. 29,
1863)
1865 Boyd, William M.
1865 & Cox, John C.
1865, 67, 68 Hutchison, Lewis B.
1870 DeGroff, A.P.
1872, 74, 78 Choate, A.C.
1876 Baker, William H.
1881 McElhany, James R.
1883 Hutchison, Lewis B. (died Nov. 1883)
1883 Byrd, J.W. (filled remainder of Hutchison's term)
1885 Byrd, J.W.
1887 & 1889 Shannon, John F.
1891 & 1893 Featherston, Frank
1895 Akers, Frank
1897 & 1899 Thomas, Andrew J.
For the book, I will probably include deceased Sheriffs through present day.
I've found obituaries, family files, and census records for some of these
folks but hope that listers may have more complete information from their
own research and would be willing to save my "re-inventing the wheel".
Again, thanks for your consideration and I would greatly appreciate any
information anyone would be willing to submit. Please either post to the
list or email me off-list at randykar(a)ipa.net.

I am trying to find descendants of Richard Miller Choate (b. 1804, Bath
Co., KY ? - 1871, Trigg Co., KY) and Nancy Eleanor Choat Knox (b. 1799, Bath
Co., KY ? - 1877, Livingston Co., MO). I believe they were brother and
sister, and would love to get confirmation.
I am a descendant of Augustine Choat that died in Bath Co., KY after
December 28, 1839 through his son Isaac W. who migrated to Louisiana. The
following is a transcription of Augustine's last will and testament.
Augustine Choate's Will, Bath Co., KY Will Book D, Page 80:
In the name of God, Amen.
I, Augustine Choat do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament
hereby expressly revoking all others. I desire to be buried in a decent
manner after my death, and my funeral expenses and all just debts to be paid.
I expressly emancipate and set free, after my death, my negroe boy, Billy,
hereby expressly liberating him from any servitude to any person on earth
after my death, except his mother Sarah, whom it is my will and desire he
should take care and support and keep from want during her life, and that so
much of his services annually as may be necessary for that purpose are hereby
expressly set apart for that purpose, but it is expressly my will that
nothing herein shall be so construed as to subject said Billey to be a slave
to my heirs or any other else after my death, but if necessary my executor
shall have power to hire said boy out an appropriate so much of his annual
hire ot the said Sarah's support as maybe necessary, and the balance after
paying all necessary expenses to go to the use of said Billey exclusively and
to be paid annually to him by my said executor. It is further my will and
desire that after paying my just debts & funeral expenses that my negro woman
Sarah shall have all my estate, real personal & mixed, except the boy Billey,
herein intending to be set free on the herein set forth. I will to each of
my children Samual Choate's children, Mariah Glover, Nelly, Isaac Choat,
Austin Choat, Margaret Epperson, John Choat, Richard Choat, one dollar each
out of my estate. I hereby constitute and appoint James Sudduth my sole
executor of this my last will and testament. Given under my hand & seal this
28th day of December 1838.

I have done a lot of research on this family. There is a lot of
coincidental evidence leading me to believe they belonged to this family, but
I can not find the confirmation. If you are a descendant of any of these
brothers and sisters, please contact me at:
Shawn Choat Martin

This is my very tall brick wall:
Rufus T Choate born 1868, married Alemeda "Allie" Rapert 8/24/1899, in Ripley County, Missouri.
They had the following children:
Fern Elizabeth
Gladis Mollie
Pearl Lea
Lurman Ray
Doyle Thay
Buren Clark
Glenna Olive
I believe they were all born in Arkansas. Lurman was born in Maynard, Randolph County, Arkansas.
I have all of the birth dates.
My problem is the father of Rufus. I believe Rufus is the same person who married Jane Brooks. They had two children that I know of, Myrtle born in 1893 and Stella born in 1897. Jane died in 1899. Rufus would have been a very young man and would more than likely have remarried.
If I can prove that the two are one and the same, then the father of Rufus would have been T. J. Choate and my brick wall will come tumbling down.
I haven't been able to find Rufus or Allie in the 1900 census. I thought if I could find them there, hopefully Myrtle and Stella would be with them, and that of course would solve the whole thing.
If anyone out there has a clue to any of this, I would greatly appreciate it.
