Choate Island - or Hog Island - as it is also referred to, is on the Essex
river off the coast of Ipswich or Essex, MA. In the late 1600's John Choate
became the sole owner of the Island and then when his son, Thomas, married
Mary Varney, they became the first white persons to live on the island.
Still standing is the house, built in 1725 for Thomas's son Francis. The
island remained in the Choate family until 1916 when the family sold the
Island. It is now the property of the state of Massachusetts. There are
many p0ictures of the interior of the house in the book. I have visited the
island twice and would love to return.
