In October 1993 issue of "Wild West" magazine is an article called "Matter
of Honor" regarding the Choctaw Nation's brand of justice. Included in the
article is a photo of an Amos Choate (no date given) tied to a tree. He was
accused by the Choctaw of stealing cattle: his sentence, 100 lashes.
Caption says: "Once a criminal had been punished, he was released and his
recent offense forgotten."
Hope this is helpful to someone.

Hello,
My great grandmother on my mother's side was Ida
Catherine Choate of Ipswich, NY. I do have pictures
I've just gotten of her.
They we're also homesteaders in Milltown Alabama and
in Cashmere Washington.
I just got my own computer. I'm now on AOL. But still
keep my yahoo for geneaology. I'm doing three
families.
My dad's side and my mother's side.
Sure get's interesting once you start getting together
with cousins on line and find info. Exciting.
Good luck with yours, if anyone knows anything of Ida
any help would be appreciated. I know she's one of the
Choate decendents in Choates of America Book.

Daniel Thomas Choate, son of Francis Marion and Sarah Angeline (Briscoe) Choate, was
born in Glen Rose, TX, on 1 Sept. 1885, died in Sayre, OK, on 27 April 1959. Daniel
came to Roger Mills Co., OK, by horseback. He was a jack of all trades and master of
none. Daniel was a ranch hand and broke horses to ride. He never married.
If you are talking about the one that mentions he died on Mar. 1st, no that is my gr-
granduncle, who was married to Martha Hart.
I was the one who did these, years ago, when I don't believe there were many lists. I'm
sorry that I didn't take down all of the names and notes of these old newspapers. But if
anyone is interested, you may order the microfilm, as I did, from your local LDS. Believe
me, there was scads of info located in these old papers!!!! Bev
Every family research I've seen, until yesterday, has listed
Thomas Choate (son of Thomas Choate and LaVesta Jones) as
being married to Susan Pace. I ran across someone's
genealogy yesterday that listed her as Susan Page. Does
anyone know for sure which name is correct?

Was the Austin Choate that was mentioned in this post as a Union Soldier
married to Naomi Pyburn? Or as she is sometimes listed Oma Shoat ?

Well Hello Everyone and Happy New Year,
Barbara posted the NARA ARchives territory crimes info. I, being one of the
last financial contributors to rootsweb, am able to receive all Choate (and
variations) postings on any list, any genconnect site and any rootsweb
surname listing.
The following came today from the Fentress Co TN list. Given our Southern
Choate's penchant for being on the wrong side of the law (a ggg uncle
included on my side) in the 1800s, I innocently but expectantly started
reading and said...well this sounds surprisingly good. Austin name still
around then, someone buys subscription to the rag in question, someone adds
to their house, someone has a normal uncomplicated but sad death...But....
Then I got to August 14, 1898, at which point I knew it was too good to be
true, and can only hope these folks were Northern Choates (any of you out
there) who moved South and met up with cousins and liked their names (Austin
from Augustin Hawkins, etc.). <grin> It appears as though the person who is
posting this maybe doing a sequence of posts in which case I'll send
followup....At least Henry he was far enough away from Hanging Judge
Parker...PRobably in a cave where he kept his still.
I just added Choates (and about 10 variations) to my search, so hopefully
I'll be sending you (us) more later.
My best to you all,
