I found a clipping of Death Notices from the Daily Oklahoma.
It lists one:
CHOATE, Thomas Roy, 78, Services Wednesday (Smith), in Ada Oklahoma.
The date isn't on the clipping, but on a sheet paperclipped to it there
is the following information:
My oldest aunt noted that his (Thomas Roy Choate) father was Dill
Choate and that he was named for his father's brother, Tom Choate.
Sorry folks. A major typo. It should be

Most of this sketch is just to praise Choate. There is little

he had been a resident of Texas for 28 yrs. Spent the entire time in

From Goodspeed's Tennessee Histories
Humphrey's County
p. 1212 John L. Choate - a prominenet farmer of Humphreys County, was
born in Dickson County January 8, 1833, being the oldest of nine
children of James and Nancy (Medlock) Choate. The father, who was a
farmer, was born in 1801. He was a constable in Dickson county for a
period of 28 years. Our subject remained on the farm with his father to
the age of 19 when he went to Texas where he farmed one year. He then
became a citizen of Dickson County again for about five years at the end
of which time he came to Humphreys County, where he has since resided.
February 1, 1858 he was married to Mrs. Jane Hooper who became the
mother of five children: John M., Isom L., Samuel H., Harry D. and
Nancy L. Mrs. Choate was born in Davidson County in 1824. In the fall
of 1862 Mr. Choate enlisted in Captain John MInor's Cavalry, Confederate
States Army. He was taken prisoner and held at Camp Morton for 18
months where he underwent intense suffering. Upon being released he
returned to Dickson County and remained for two years; thence he came to
Humphreys Co., where he has since followed farming. Politically Mr.
Choate has always been a warm Democrat. He has never been an aspirant
for office but is respected as a moral and upright citizen.
p. 1213 Dillen Choate, a farmer of Humphreys County, was born in
January 1839. He is the oldest of the ten children born to the marriage
of Peter and Elizabeth Choate. The father was a farmer. he was born in
Dickson County, Tennessee. Our subject's early life was that of farmer
boy on a farm. In 1860 married Miss Levina Holland who bore him four
sons and two daughters: Samuel, William S., James C., John M., Lillie B
and Sarah A. James C. is deceased. In February 1853 Mr. Choate

Dear List:
I have found conflicting information concerning which Burnham Ann Choate
married.
The Ann I speak of was born 22 May 1691 on Choate Island, Ipswich, Essex
Co., MA, the dau of Thomas Choate and Mercy/Mary Varney.
Various sources say she married John Burnham or Josiah Burnham (but not
both) each the son of different fathers.
Has this conflict been rectified? and if so, could someone provide me
with the proper information? (I have access to the Choate genealogy,
FTM marriage cd #231, and LDS sources. They do not identify the problem
and therefore do not address the issue.)
TIA for your help.

Sorry,If the address for 1853 page Cherokee genealogy is still not working
for some try this one. Must be an internet thing. I checked and they work
with my browser, just can't explain it. :) I use copy and paste so its not
a typing mistake. Its a family tree maker site and it may just be busy . An
interesting thing about Cherokee custom is that is was matrilineal so some
family trees are organized with the women's names first. ~Paula~

Actually, I couldn't get in that way and I had to cut it back to eliminate
the last part before the last backslash, so the last part is BOOK-0001
Thanks So MUCH for putting it on. The Caroline Elizabeth Sanders has the
Indian background from Cherokee Nation East. To check her and GW Choate out
you can go to www.rootsweb.com. Do a "quick search" for George Washington
Choate and the World Connect link below the boxes.
I a got interested in this line because I have Chambers and if you follow
Caroline back you will find one of her AUNT Sanders married a Maxwell
Chambers.

If you are having trouble accessing the Cherokee family tree it is because
there was a problem with the word wrap and it separated into three lines.
Try below if you got an error message. There are thousands of names in this
tree and some of the families probably don't know they have Indian
connections.

Janet,
Cathy Choate married John Ed Simmons, I am assuming in Robertson Co, Or
possibly in Davidson Co, where we found Powhatan and I presume brother Josiah
in 1850. Cathy died at some point (don't have my notes handy) and their son
Powell Haten (is how it is usually spelled) was raised by my ggg grandfather
Powhatan and his wife Winney Haley. I have a picture of him with Powhatan,
wife and the five other children.
Of Gabriel's children I have wondered the most about Stepto (which I have
seen spelled as Stephen) and whether or not this my be a clue as to his
mother. There were Stepto families in Franklin/Henry/Lunenberg, etc. The
marriage records for the Choates are abysmal in the late 1700s in Southern
VA. Given my Powhatan's name, given the fact that the Choates started out as
traders, etc, I have to believe that maybe they "took" Indian wives. There
is certainly enough discussion of it on the Choate list, and a cousin (Bruce,
you out there still) also descendant of Powhatan said he found him on an
Indian roll. I'm still looking though.
Regarding Betsy (Elizabeth) Chowning Choate. On the group sheet I received
she was shown as the mother.
Thanks for the information in John Chowning's will. That book on the Payne's
implied that he died in 1805 or something. I need to go back sometime and
look at the Robertson Co will book. Is there an inventory or probate record
that names the granchildren ..she asked hopefully..
If I recall correctly there is a fairly sizeable age span involved in Edward
Choate's children. I need to study that some more.
My best,
Janet Hunter
Dear Cousin Janet,
I didn't mean to imply that Elizabeth Chowning was Edward Choat's
first wife, only that she came before Sarah "Sally" (House) Exum. Edward
could possibly have been married before Elizabeth Chowning, I don't know
and I don't know if Elizabeth Chowning was Gabriel's mother. My problem
is that I don't have birth or marriage dates of these people. I do know
that Elizabeth Chowning, dau. of John Chowning, was wife of Edward Choat
at one time and had children, because of John Chowning's Will written 23
April 1829, proven Feb. 1831.
Copied verbatim from John Chownings's Will:
Item I give to my son-in-law Edward Choat one dollar in lawful money of
this state
(Two items in between)
Item I give to my grand children the children of my daughter Betsy Choat
Dec'd one fourth part to them and their heirs forever
Most of the info. about Sarah "Sally" (House) Exum Choat came from a
descendant of Sarah's. I recorded it into my Family Tree Software and
pasted the copies to my email.
I have a question for you. I've noticed several subscribers to the
Choate mailing list have Cathy Cassie Choate as one of the daughters of
Gabriel and Lucy. Just wondered if this is based on circumstantial
evidence or proof and what is this evidence or proof?
A thought just came to mind that maybe John Chowning, Elizabeth
Choat's father, could have been married before Lettice Payne in 1778.

Hello Again Cousin Janet,
I read your family group sheet with interest. I was also given the
information that Elizabeth Chowning was the first wife of Edward Choate, and
mother of Gabriel, by a cousin (another descendant of Powhatan) Grant Choate.
However, in researching the Chownings I have come across information that
leads me to believe that this is not possible, courtesy of a Payne
researcher. There is an online book on the family of Joseph and Phoebe
Payne at this website: http://w3.one.net/~evaughan/vaughan/wilson.htm
In the Introduction on "other Payne lines" it says that John Chowning who
died in Robertson Co married Letitia Payne about April of 1778. They had
amongst other children a daughter Jane who married a Payne. This information
indicates that Elizabeth Chowning Choate's parents were John Chowning and
Letitia Payne because of the 1808 deed of gift recorded in Robertson Co TN:
Page 80 -- 4 October 1808 -- Deed of gift proven from John Chowning to his
children: Thomas, John, Robert G., Letisha and Richard Chowning, Elizabeth
Choate, Jane Payne and Sarah Holman. Proven by oaths of Augustine Cook,
Martin Walton & Chloe Walton.
If John Chowning and Letitia Payne were married in 1778, and they had
Elizabeth right away say 1779, she could not have married Edward Choate until
1795 at best, and even if they had had Gabriel right away he would have been
barely ten years old when he married Lucy Webb in 1806.
So I am thinking that Edward either (1) had a first wife or (2) Elizabeth was
married to one of the other multitude of Choates that blew through Robertson
Co at one point or other.
What do you think?? I am curious where you got the family group sheet.
My best,
Janet Hunter
