Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The following information was found on another list:
The TN State Library & Archives has made the index to the TN Confederate
Pension Application Files available on its web site. This collection
includes approx. 28,000 applications from soldiers, widows, and
"Colored" soldiers. The files are rich in genealogical and historical
data, as they often include not only the detailed application form, but
supporting documents and correspondence as well. Pensions were first
offered in 1891.
The site is searchable by the name of the pensioner or by the county of
residence. The index lists the name, county, regiment, and pension
number. This pension number can then be used to order copies of the
original documents. The data was scanned from a printed index created
in the 1960's, and edited extensively to correct errors.

Wendy,
If I was distressed over slaveowning ancestors, I'd be a dead woman now. I
am up to the several hundreds amongst my Southside VA plantation ancestors,
and I haven't even looked at the wills of my Stafford Co VA, Wallers, Carrs
and Starks who I know were well off, and in early 1700s that meant
slaves...that I know of that is. And, I haven't begun to count the ones on
the Eastern Shore of VA and MD, but I know I have them there...and I have my
longest (and clearest) unbroken ancestry there (from 1640 to 1810 or so
before they got smart, got away from the mosquitoes and went to central TN).
However, I think I misread the original information in my post. I thought it
said Isaac Chote was hung for horse stealing, but I realize that it was his
slave that was???
My best,
Janet Hunter

Fellow Choate Researchers:
This message appeared on the VA roots list run by the Library of VA. It is
a list of executions in Richmond for horse theft.
I was hoping it might not be true, but sure enough there is a Choate on it.
Isaac Chote 1782 <sigh>.
Anybody know him?

Apologies for the lack of asthetics.
How to read this:
1. First row are the database fields. All these executions were held in
Richmond, the location of crime column identifies the locality where the
crime was committed where I have been able to find it.
2. The 'owner' column is the last name of the owner of an executed slave. On
this particular table all of the blacks executed are slaves and none have
surnames. The surname immediately following their name is the owner's
surname.
3. There are some persons of unknown race on this list, such as #8, York. I
couldn't tell from the record if this is a last name or first name.
4. There are two Seymour's on the list with the same date. They may be the
same person but I don't believe so.
5. There are actually 55 entries, not 23 as I stated earlier.
Best wishes,
Bill Crews

I don't remember if I posted this before or not.
In April, I went to Hickory, Oklahoma and photographed some family
tombstones there. Included in these photos are the following:
John D. Choate
b 10 May 1837
d 22 Jan 1900
Nancy A(nn Spurlock), wife of J.D. Choate
b 5 April 1843
d 15 Sept 1898
If anyone is interested, I can e-mail them this photo. For other
information about Barefoot, Grubbs, Newcomb, Williams, Morehead, and
Marr tombstones in this cemetery, please check my webpage at:

If you're having trouble with Angelfire, i.e. the page doesn't load or
it says there is no such page, just keep trying. I guarantee the page
was there as of this morning.
