Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
At this time I feel that I must remove myself from your listserv. Please
replace me with my sister in law - the "real" Choate anyway - at

We are having a Choate Family reuion for our family the first weekend in
August. We have been searching for some of our lost and misplaced

not been heard from since.
If you are related to Rosa and Charles Choate of Flint Michigan, relatives
would include :Veletta, Rosalee, Sandra, Leslie, Lauren......... Please let
me know, we would love to have you come by or add your name to our large
family tree we will be updating at the reunion.
My Choate Cousins
I am forwarding this to you all from the ETN list. The author is a
descendant of Wm Ward and Letha Leah Ake.
I know we have talked about Melinda Smith with the Choate grandparents, but
(shame on me) can't remember what was said.
We have been having an extensive conversation about the Trail of Tears,
Cherokee Removal, etc.
I know this will be of interest, but don't know if there is anything new.

Subject: Re: [ETN] Cherokee Removal
Jay, I live in Fort Smith Arkansas. The first fort was built in 1817 to keep
the Osage from killing all the Cherokees who had come west with the first,
or voluntary removal. I live within twenty miles of the Ward homeplace
established by William Ward in 1819. He was captured by the British at
River Raisin during the War of 1812 and got lost on his way back to
Kentucky. He married Letha Leah Ake in Tennessee and they were back here by
the above date. Neither of them claimed Indian blood. A child born in
Illinois during the first removal was brought here by her grandparents;
their name was Choate. They called her Melinda Smith; when it became
inevitable that the forced removal would take place the first to be moved
were the "Old Settlers" The Choates went into Indian Territory after
assuring Melinda Smith's well being. She was sold to William Campbell and
the marriage afforded him a good farm with healthy livestock. William and
Melinda Smith Campbell had several children, a daughter Nancy Christina
married Francis Marion Ward the youngest of William Ward and Letha Ake
Ward's children. Nancy Christina was well educated and after the marriage
she taught Francis Marion "Frank" Ward how to read and write. I'm sure
you're familiar with Nuttall's book and the comments he made about the
Indians living on the banks of the Arkansas River. William Ward's sons,
"Cash" and Frank both served in the Arkansas 1st Cavalry US as did two of
"Cash" Ward's sons John Robert and William. Francis Marion "Frank" Ward was
murdered after the Civil War and is buried at the National Cemetery here in
Fort Smith. Family legend has it that William Ward died during the Civil
War and that the women of the family buried him in the National Cemetery "as
all the men were away at war." I called the Cemetery office and asked if
they had ever dug an unknown up while opening another grave.
I was told NO! and if I inquire again it will be from a
pay phone. -j-

Here is another message I received reply to Toffdawn(a)aol.com
Hi ,
Off the top of my head, Moses L Choate had a daughter , Zelda and I
know
that he had a daughter who married a John English. I don't know wanted
to
know about them . They were from Texas, and not apt to show up in "
Choates
of America.
I have some information about them if the interested party reappears.

Since I couldn't remember who ask me about this person, I'm forwarding
the message I got from Clint and hope that the right person reads it.

I have not seen anything on this recently but it may be referring to
my ancestor
Vesta Zippora Choate who married John England. I have never learned who
her parents were but she was mentioned in the book Choates of the South.
Vesta Zippora Choate was born ABT 1767 Montgomery, Va.) She
married John England ( born about 1765) in about 1783 in
Montgomery, Virginia. Vesta is believed to have descended from
Christopher Choate who immigrated from England to Maryland, and died
in 1692. John and Zippora's children we know of included:
1. Vesta Zippora b 1 Nov 1784 Montgomery, Virginia
2. Joseph b 15 Jun 1791 in Virginia
3. Unknown - father of John (3-1)
I reviewed a microfiche copy of the book Choates of the South,
Descendents of Christopher Choate of Maryland" by Irene Williams ,
P.O. Box 68, Wartrace, Tennessee 37183. and found this mention of
Vesta.
Page 118 lists Zippora England, adm of estate of John England
...Ordered that she be released from payment on 100 acres of land for
present year.
Below that entry is the following:
NOTE --Some say that Zippora's maiden name was CHOATE. ICW.
In 1719, twenty six years after the original inventory, Christopher
Choate Jr. assigns the administration of his father's Hearing Street
Estate to Richard Gist of Baltimore, Md.. This suggest s
difficulties connected with the settlement of the estate --not at
all unusual in probate cases where much property or many heirs are
involved, especially when no will is executed.
Richard Gist must have been close to the Choate family in Md. The
MD. Calendar of Wills records the will of a Richard Cromwell of
Baltimore Co.23 Sept 1717 who names among his heirs his cousin,
Richard Gist, and his wife Zippora Gist.
Richard Gist married Zipporah Murray Dec. 7, 1704 , the daughter
of James Murray and Jemima Morgan. Richard is the son of Christopher
Gist who was married to Edith Cromwell. Later on the GIST and CHOATE
lines combine when John GIST marries Sinnia Hollis (daughter of James
Hollis and Sarah Choate)
Could Richard Gist be the father of Christopher Gist who was in
Baltimore before 1682 and whose family history and descendants re
published in the Maryland History magazine volume 8. Also Could
Vesta Zippora Choate have been named after Zippora Gist?

I just returned from a cruise around New Zealand. When we were in
Waitangi, Bay of Islands,
the guide on the bus pointed out a home that had been built by Arthur Choat
(no e) 130 years ago.
I didn't get any other information from the guide other than the spelling
of the name and the
fact that Arthur was their "second regency". Our visit about this was
interupted and I never did get to talk to him again.
My sister, Marjorie Kinkade, has inquired about Arthur and Harry Choate, who
are of our lineage.
I asked her if this could be the long lost Arthur but she thought not
because of the time the house was built.
Does anyone has any information about the New Zealand Arthur Choat. Maybe
the guide was wrong.
Thought since it's been awhile since I posted my line of Choat's I would try
again. Maybe this will stir something up, or maybe everyone should post there
line again.
Nellie Delilah Choat b. August 1856 d. 1921 buried Liberty United Baptist
Cemetery, Marble Creek, Iron County, MO next to her husband Smiley Alfonzo
Orr. They are listed in the Iron County Mo census for 1900 with 10 children.
the 1860 Madison County, MO Census lists her a follows:
Isaac L. Choat 22 Miner MO
Louisa Choat 22 wife IL
Delila Choat 3 daughter MO
Sarah E. Choats 2 daughter MO
I'm not even sure if this is my Nellie Delilah, family rumor has it that she
had a sister named Sarah. Hopefully someone can help. This has been my
hardest search yet. Thanks Deb
Last week a couple of people ask if anyone knew anything about a John
England who married a Choate and also a woman whose name started with Z
- I accidentally deleted both messages, but I did look them up in the
Choates in America book and could find neither one. This book was
published in 1896. Sorry I didn't keep the messages.
Some time ago I ask if anyone had any information about two of my
Grandfather's brothers or their descendants. . No one answered, and I
am requesting again. Arthur Choate was born 19 July, 1870 and Harry
Choate was born 10 Nov. 1874. They were the sons of Abel and Caroline
Talcott Choate, who lived near Pitzer, Madison county, Iowa. Abel and
Caroline came to this farm in 1869. In Abel's probate packet I found a
copy of his will and nothing was left to these sons - it stated that
they had already received what was coming to them. There was a list of
the rest of the children and their addresses and there was no address
for Harry or Arthur. My grandmother once said that these two had "left
to go out west, and no one had heard from them since" I would like to
complete this part of my family tree and would be most appreciative if
some one could give me some information.

I must have missed those messages. Could it perhaps have been a John
ENGLISH/INGLISH?

Thanks for the pointer to this wonderful site. Just one quibble, you
mis-typed and said John Varney was hanged for witchcraft, it was John
Procter. His sister Abigail was married to Thomas Varney. Their daughter
Mary married Thomas Choate, son of the emigrant John. Choates and Varneys
were supporters of John Procter and signed petitions in his favor during the
witchcraft trials.

If you are interested in the will of John Choate of Ipswich and other
wills connected to the family go to
http://www.essexcountyma.org/wills/
You will find
John's will
William and Bridgett Varney (Thomas Choate's grandparents-in-law)
John Varney of Salem (the one hanged as a witch - this is interesting -
before his trial two of his sons were arrested for witchcraft and he
made an addition to the will. Thomas Choate witnessed - he spelled his
name Chote - I have a copy of his autograph spelled that way.) John
Varney was Thomas Choate's wife's uncle
John Varney of Ipswich - John of Salem 's father)
John Burnham (2nd Thomas Choate's father-in-law)
William Butler (Jeremiah Choate's grandfather-in -law)
These are from my line my line - there is a list of names and you may
find your relatives among them. The spelling and things that were
willed are very interesting.

I received this from another surname list. I think it's a great idea

Hi folks and listowner:
One thing that might make it easier to track Choate emails is if our
listowner would add [CHOATE] as standard for all emails. Almost all of my
other lists now have similar indications so we all know what we are
deleting. Apparently listowners are able to do this.
My apologies for not sending this directly to the listowner.

If you all are referring to my recent posts, then the subject line
has
always reflected the content of the message. If the subject line
reads
"Kentucky Atlas & Gazetteer", it's because I'm providing you with a
link
to a very nice site that contains said Atlas & Gazetteer.

A simple solution; just look at the header before deciding to delete, or not.
