note.
The information on Edward Choate, Sr., Edward Choate jr. and Gabriel
Choate are not entirely verified but the evidence is definitely there.
Information received from Robertson County, Tennessee
Powhattan Choate and Winney are buried down by Kerico caves in the old
buffalo ranch at Pennsboro. the grave has been visited and entirely
verified by relatives. Powhattan was a very rich man, owned several
slaves. On microfilm, Powhattan Choate listed in the Cherokee records.
His land was valued in 1860 to be worth $1600 real estate and $800
personal property. the markers on the grave also show him as evidently
wealthy, they are very tall markers with scroll work and all. Stand
about 5 feet tall and quite impressive
Alexander and sister Almeda was raised by their grandfather Powhattan.
Nicholas (their dad) left and went to Texas. Divorced his first wife
and married a woman named Kitty down in Texas. The stories about
Nicholas were not all that good. Seems as if he deserted his first two
children.

ON THE TWELFTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS:
My true love gave to me,
Twelve census searches,
Eleven printer cartridges,
Ten e-mail contacts,
Nine headstone rubbings,
Eight birth and death dates,
Seven town clerks sighing,
Six second cousins,
Five coats of arms,
Four GEDCOM files,
Three old wills,
Two CD-ROMs
One Bible entry
And a branch in my family tree.

My cousins,
The entry below was on the ETN(Eastern Tennessee List) today. I thought it
would be of interest...to all of you, including myself a descendant of a
Powhatan Choate for goodness sakes, who think/have been told through family
stories you have Indian blood. This has the story of a Choate granddaughter
left behind because she wasn't full blooded Indian, but became a bought
bride. It sounds likeher name was Margaret Choate and she married a
Campbell, if I read this correctly.
And THEN a daughter Nancy marries Francis Marion WARD, who is murdered. Then
one of her descendants marries a descendant of the murderer. What can we
possibly say? I just "met" a first cousin, once removed (an after thought of
my much older first cousin) who is very interested in everything. I was
trying to explain the Choates to her. It was an awesome task.
Needless to say I have asked for more information! I have pretty much been
deleting things out of hand, but this threat is on a Bean/Been line
(prominent early Eastern TN settlers) and I just got a possible collateral
connection of my own to my lost Williams ancestors.
I am REALLY curious if anybody recognizes any of this.
My best toyou all.
Janet (Baugh) Hunter

I am the tenth generation from John Choate of Ipswich. Our family are
going through a hard time right now.
In 1977, my cousin, Alan, a doctor in Des Moines, Iowa , was shot and
killed by his ex-wife. He too, was a descendant of John. The wife was
found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. She was a prominent
person in the social circles and Republican party. She has been a model
prisoner, but at the time of her sentencing, she threatened the rest of
Alan's family. Now she has appealed to the parole board to commute her
sentence so that she may be paroled. Tomorrow the board will give it's
recommendation to the governor, and it will be up to him to decide one
way or the other. Alan had remarried and his wife was expecting a baby
- a boy born 7 months after the murder, that never saw his father. We
are all praying that the board will decide not to recommend commuting .
Alan's mother (my dad's sister) was widowed when her three sons were
very young. The oldest died from Hodgkin's disease when he was 29 - he
left a two yr. old son, then Alan was killed and so she has only one son
left. The story has been in the newspapers and on television, and it is
very hard on her to be reliving this now.
I am asking for your prayers for the immediate family of Alan.
Ok - found this little tidbit in my aunt's papers. It just adds to the
mystery. *s*

Janie Choate, Warrior Princess...
Janie Choate is described as a full-blood Choctaw from Mesquite, Texas.
The only other family information is: one sister and two brothers, 18
and 17.
My one aunt had written a note on the paper asking who she was. But no
answer is written there.
