Happy Holidays to all of you Choates everywhere.
I hope your Thanksgiving was as happy as mine. I spent it with my
family. Only two grandsons were missing, plus two great grandchildren.
I have been missing any activity on this list. I do wish some of you
would come up with some ancestor stories - or new things you have
discovered about your families. Do you wonder how those early Choates
celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas? Of course the very early New
Englanders didn't do any celebrating at Christmas until years later. I
guess the Puritans thought it was frivolous or something. I'm glad
there was a change of heart. Maybe it would be interesting if we could
tell some traditions of our families during this holiday season -
Something- Anything, to let me know there are still some Choates out
there!!
To my Choate cousins,
I didn't mean to neglect you but for the moment I have been focussing on my
other set of ancestors on the Chesapeake Bay...a huge set. In the process of
sorting one family out (Bowens) on the Lower Delmarva Roots list, a number of
"situations" have come to light. I keep expecting a Choate to appear here,
because these folks were just across the Bay Baltimore and Anne Arundel Co.
and a bit south...distance that could be covered quickly, certainly less than
a day by boat. It must be something in the air...
I have three 1600/early 1700 ancestors there that had scandals well-covered
in court cases, will suits, etc. One of them, Lodowick Fleming Jr. ( my 5 g
grandfather) was cited for bastardy of a married woman in the 1720s. I don't
have any copies of original court records to share with you (darn).
On the other two I do...Rhoda Fassit and Edward Hammond, whose grandchildren
Wm Bowen III (mother Mary Hammond) and Rhoda Fassit eventually married.
Well here are portions of their tales if you are interested. These folks
however seemed to straighten up in the 1800s, unlike others who shall remain
nameless)

#2 -- RHODA FASSIT, MY 7 G GRANDMOTHER "THE BABE"
Rhoda (Lamberton) Fassit was married to John Fassit, an Accomac Co VA county
attorney who quit because the job was more trouble than he was paid for ca.
1667 or so. He is distinguished by closing down a play that was performed
during Cromwell's "reign", and many other cases. County attorneys' salaries
were paid as a percentage of the "take" so to speak, sort of like personal
injury lawyers. Anyway John dies in 1673, leaving a wife Rhoda (known fondly
by her descendants as Rhoda "the babe") and several children. Rhoda promptly
begins an open affair with one John Cropper -- one married John Cropper, one
John Cropper married to Gertrude Bowman, daughter of one of the county
justices and sister to Sarah Bowman Littleton, wife of Southy Littleton,
another county Justice.
This is a brief summary of Rhoda's court-related doings in AccomacVA before
they "get out of Dodge" so to speak and move to Worcestor MD (next county
north). I didn't put this on the Lower Delmarva List but sent it to a
cousin, who hopes to some day write a mini-series. Go to www.ocmuseum.org,
which has a great genealogy section and enter Cropper for families.
Rhoda in trouble 1672 before John Fassitt dies for beating a child for whom
she and John are guardians. Child placed in the care of another. Several
entries. Rhoda placed in protective custody for a while till she promises to
reform.
Rhoda and John Cropper begin seeing each other ca 1674. Court testimony from
various witnesses who observe them going to one another's "naked" beds.
Numerous court entries.
John apparently harbors another' gentleman's servant. Wants to buy him but
the other owner won't let him. During the course of various dispositions
taken of observations during one day, including from my ancestor Wm Fawsett
age about 16, working John Cropper's corn patch along with brother Charles,
it is mentioned John goes toward the orchard (where the fugitive servant is)
then on to Mrs. Fassits. The saga continues when John comes home "the next
morning". So, did Wm and Charles go home to their mother's and John, in
whose fields they worked, basically serves as their father". At least four
and maybe more illegitimate children may have been born to John Cropper and
Rhoda.
1677 Wm Fassit sues his mother for his part of his father's estate. Rhoda
and John in the process of transferring everything to Worcestor Co. that is
moveable. Testimony regarding 20 cattle being driven to Worcestor. Wm has a
guardian Richard Kellam.
I figure that since Wm does name a daughter Rhoda, things must have turned
out okay between mother and son. By 1780 Rhoda and John in MD and court
cases there cease re the affair.
1781 a FURTHER case...Rhoda returns to Accomac and is harbored in the home of
a WmTailor while she gives birth to a "bastard" Peregrine Johnson, possibly
fathered by Wm Tailor. Case not settled until 1784 when Tailor is taken to
task for violating a harboring strangers statute, apparently conceived with
Rhoda in mind.
Finally, during this period of time serving as justices of the peace and not
seeming to routinely leave the room when the Cropper/Fassit issues come up
are his father in law Edmund Bowman and brother-in-law Southy Littleton.
(Cropper remains married to Gertrude). Southy does leave on occasion. Also
active on juries are noted scoundrel later Edward Hamond (father of Mary, Wm
Bowen II's wife) and Maximillian Gore, stepfather of Edward Hammond's wife
Anne, daughter of John and Joyce Smith. John Smith dies and Joyce marries
Maximillian.
#2 EDWARD HAMMOND, (Mentioned above) MY 7G GRANDFATHER. He was involved in
all manner of court cases, being sued, suing others, threatening others. His
"relationship" with one Jane Griffin first came to light in 1706. I am
hoping that his wife, Anne Smith was dead by then. We descendants figure
that Edward was well into his 50s when this was going on. (FYI, I have a
great grandfather Wm Michael Marsh, divorced, who was 59 in 1820 census, with
second wife Nora, age 26)
Here are two vignettes of Edward for his life and love in Worcestor Co MD
courts (aka Ocean City MD's county, home of the Chincoteague ponies and home
of my longest running families that didn't move more than 75 miles and are
ALL cousins by the time the 1750s comes around from 1641 to 1810, with
excellent records...except marriages bef 1795 and some misc. records. They
moved up to Somerset/Worcestor MD from Accomac/Northampton VA.)
Grand Jury 11/8/1710 presents Capt. Edward Hamond for providing for Jane
Griffin of Allhaollows Parish she being deemed a lude woman and forewarned to
the contrary by the Church Wardens Mr. John Purnell informer evidences

Hamond be fined according to law and to pay all officers fees accrued by
means of his conviction. (Frank V. Walczyk, Somerset Co. MD Judicial Records

Hi Janet and Mike
Re the Spurlock name. I don't know hardly anything about them, but I
do suggest that Mike get on the Spurlock list, if he's not already on
it.

Barbara and all,
Being as how this is the only list I have seen this surname on, I thought I'd
forward it and maybe some of you can help out -- especially since most of our
southern Choate boys pretty much left no trail, other than those criminal
records and court suits of course, for that crucial period of about 50 years
after Christopher III (and other Choate brothers cousins??) moved to
Lunenberg where they must have just "took" their wives.

I'm not sure if I'm on the right list or not. Please forgive me if I'm not.
I'm looking for info on the SPURLOCK's who settled in the Richmond, VA area
in the 1600's (particularly which Spurlock was the first to immigrate to
the US and in what year). I have not been able to find this name on the
ship's lists that are on the internet. Can anyone help?

I found reference to this genealogy list for those who have Cherokee
ancestors. I know some of you "southerners " have written about his and
thought it might be of interest to you.
