I've been told that NICHOLAS was probably the son of GREENBERRY CHOATE who
lived in So. Illinois at this same time but I have not been able to make
the connection as yet. GREENBERRY died in Gallatin Co., ILL in an area
that is now Saline Co. Supposedly living with son, SQUIRE at the time of
death. SQUIRE had settled in So. Johnson Co. when he first came to
Illinois. Soon after GREENBERRY's death, SQUIRE and all of his family
moved to Massac Co. ILL.
NICHOLAS showed up several years after SQUIRE and GREENBERRY and settled in
the No. part of Johnson Co. He and his children stayed pretty much in this
area of Johnson Co. If they were closely related they must not have been
very friendly as I have not found any connection between SQUIRE's family
and NICHOLAS's.
NICHOLAS supposedly came to Illinois from KY where he grew fruit trees and
made brandy. After moving to Illinois, he went back to Ky to get fruit
trees. I am trying to find some record of him in KY. between 1820 and
1830.
If anyone knows anything about Nicholas I would sure like some help. If
anyone else is interested in these people I will share what I have.

Hi all,
Had to get my official two cent's worth in on the Moses Livingston
Choate discussion. He is my g-g-g-grandfather. I just made a trip to
Livingston, Polk Co, TX, that raised more questions than it answered.
However, here are a few issues that I think need clarification.
1) Location of Moses and Ursula's marriage. I am convinced they
were married in KY. This is based in part on the fact that the 1850 census
lists daughter Clarinda's birthplace as KY. I think the confusion sets in
with 2 things: The KY county is given as Livingston. The Character Record
in the TX Land Office states Moses was married in Nacogdoches, TX. I
believe that Moses and Ursula may have had a second, Catholic marriage
ceremony to please the Mexican authorities and get the land he wanted.
2) Clarinda's (my g-g-grandmother) birth year. She was listed as
being 20 years old in the 1850 census. With her parent's marriage date as
1826, this makes more sense. If her birth year were 1820, she would have
been 30 in 1850 and born 6 years before her parents married.
3) If there was a Clarissa is questionable. Does anyone have solid
documentation?
4) I don't think Rufus and Zerilda/Zelda were born the same year.
Again, using the 1860 census, Zerilda would have been born about 1842 and
Rufus about 1844. Using the 1850 census, Zerilda's date would be about
1840, and Rufus' about 1842. Either way, Zerilda is two years older than Rufus.
5) There is some question regarding who Mary (b. 1859) was. Ursula
was about 50 years old, and that's pretty late for babies.
6) According to some sources, Zerilda married James Monroe Choate,
(son of Peter Joseph Choate and Polly Ann) in 1864, but the marriage was
recorded in 1869 in Bell County, TX.
This family basically disappears from Polk Co. in 1868. I think
it's because Moses died then. James Oliphant, Clarinda's husband, had died
in 1866; Clarinda had died before 1860 (she's not on the 1860 census with
her family). I have not been able to find Ursula or James and Clarinda's
children in the 1870 census. They show up in Karnes Co, TX in 1880 where
Jane Viola (known to the family as "Jimmie") is married to John Crockett
Stewart and Jane's brother Thomas and her grandmother Ursula are living with
them.
Both the Polk Co. history written in 1936 and the papers compiled by
Don Hendrix of Livingston have lots of information in them, but they also
contain a number of inaccuracies and contradictions. Since as several of
you have stated, the Choates were a close-mouthed clan, our job is more
challenging.
Let's use this group to straighten out as much as we can. I'd really
like to get some documentation to tie up a least a few of these loose
strings. Happy hunting to all!
Jane Caperton Johnson <3arius3(a)airmail.net>
William 1766-1923 York Co. NC is believed to be the son of Augustine
1742-1823 who died in Mecklenburg NC. Augustine is beleived to be the son of
Richard 1722-1788. Richard is the son of Christopher and Flora (Hawkins).
Augustine was named for Richard's brother Augustine (1716-1740) who was
never married and died young. He was accused of being the father of a child
born to Sarah Savage.
I am very new to the Choate listserve, so bear with me if I ask 2 questions
that have been answered long ago:
1) Does anyone have a clue about the connection between William Choate
(1766-1844, married Rachel Simril and fathered Augustine Davidson, Newton,
William Jr., James Simril, John, Rachel Elizabeth, Cynthia Douglas, and Violet
Barry) and Christophers I & II, Augustine or others in the early lineage? I
understand from a maiden aunt, now dead, that he moved with his sister Ceily,
and one other female sibling to North Carolina (possibily in the area of
Mecklenburg County or York County, South Carolina). A large number of
Carolina Choates descended from him and I have parts of the tree.....just
can't make that connection.
2) What's the relationship between Christopher I and the descendants of Robert
Choat (of Groton vs. Colchester England), the forebear of many New England
Choates?
Finally (I realize I am sneaking in a third question, here), has anyone
committed the various lineages to paper yet?

By the way, the next server we'll be bringing online will be a box
dedicated to supporting Marc Nozell's HTMLized versions of the

hours, though it's reasonable to expect Marc to need a little time
after that to get his software installed. (:
Projects after that include a dedicated IRC server, upgrading the

FrontPage server, bringing a "dirtylists" list server online, and
bringing a third ordinary list server online.
[ The "dirtylists" server is for the big, rarely used announcement
lists. We've developed a number of those things with 5,000 to
300,000 subscribers, and every time a post drops we kick the

Hi everybody,
I have a suggestion. If everybody would type in their e-mail address after their name or in the body of the message, it would help immeasureably. Most of the time I find that exchanging preliminary info just wastes the time of all in the forum. Also, there are times when I have lost a message that I wanted to reply to. My Microsoft Explorer mail function doesn't display the e-mail address. So, please, if you want a reply without getting your entire message back, add your address to your messages.

Hello, Paula,
(I tried to send the following to you personally, but the mail bounced and I
have no alternative but to send it to the list:)
A great big thank you from me, too, for your willingness to spend all that
time typing out such valuable information on the Choates. (I can't remember if
I've 'spoken' to you, but I was the one who--some time ago--started this list,
though I'm incredibly grateful to Dianna for having the time and interest to
take it over, own, and manage it.)
I believe the beginning part of the information you sent to the list is
probably the pedigree of maybe all of us Southern Choates. You mention you
have some of this early information in handwritten form. I, too would be
extremely interested in copies of what you have, and would be more than
willing to pay for copies, shipping, and your time. I've never seen the
'Cecelia list' written, and as 'Sabrit' is my direct ancestor, I'd be very
interested in what you have.
I am interested in the subsequent information of the lines of Sabrit's brother
Christopher that you have, but would understand if your information is too
lengthy to easily copy. Perhaps you might let me know? Again, I'd be more than
happy to compensate you in any way. It sounds as if what you have is valuable
to several of us Choates.
Thank you again, Paula, for sharing what you have, and I'll be reading through
it more closely when I have a moment (I work for myself, and have had to keep
genealogy for evenings and weekends lately).
Please let me know what I can do to help.
Thank you!
Karen Choate
I am forwarding this to the list.

To Paula----Just wanted you to know that it was great of you to sit down and
type all of that information. That was a really nice contribution that was made

If all of us would do a tenth of what you just did---it would solve

Paula - this is very very interesting. It certainly fleshes out the
character of people. My aunts always said the Choates were a clannish
bunch, and didn't like to talk to others about the family. Even when
they themselves were searching for family information, there were some
old-timers that just wouldn't talk, and if you knew my aunts, you'dd
know how strange that is *laughing* Please, keep posting. I find
this fascinating.
Oh, is there anyway I could get copies of those letters, etc? I'd be
more than happy to pay for copying and mailing costs.

I have a box of old CHOATE stuff I got from an aunt. I thought the
following might be of interest of to some of you. I don't know who
gathered this information but I will type it as it is written and pass
it on. I'm the grgrgrgrandaugher of Champion Choate.
Note to Diane Choate Blair: This first part is in your pedigree I think.

This was in handwriting, including signature, of course, and the
following passenger list was in handwriting. The passenger list was
written in columns just as I have it below except that the bottom two
columns appeared to the right of the columns above them. I have used
the spelling in the list. However, after Christopher got ashore, he
went to the spelling Choat.

You can see that Christopher had no wife in the list. However, he died
in 1692 and his will was probated in 1693. In 1719, Christopher II,
Administrator, had his first dealings with Richard Gist.
By 1706, the tax list of Baltimore county, Maryland, had the following
sons of Christopher I on the rolls:
Christopher II
Augustine
Edward
Church records of St. Paul's Parrish show Christopher II to have had the
following children:
Augustine, Chirstened 1716
Christopher " 1720
Richard " 1722
Sabrit " 1830

1740 Christopher III (Jr) inherited from Augustine
1741 Christopher III sells inherited property
1741 Christopher Sr. (II) and Christopher Jr (III) sell property to
NATHANIEL GIST
1749 Christopher Jr (III), Richard, and Sabrit are residents of
Lunenberg County, Virginia
1750 Christopher IV, father of Champion is born. Here in an area which
today could be described as "the Nashville area" we find the following
members of the Choate family just about the time of the disbersal of the
family:
Christopher, moved southward and died in McNairy about 1837
Isaac, moves north into Trigg county, Kentucky, probably died in KY or
Zillino(?)
Green B. (Greenberry), moved north into Illinois, died there in
mid-1830's.
Nicholas, moved south for some years and then into Illinois (seemingly
son of Isaac)
David Choate, fate unknown: I'll mention him later.
Aaron, Valentine, Thomas and Thomas Jr., Squire, Joseph, moved south
John and James remained in Dickson county
Edward, not shown in this group, eventually died in Lawrence county.
Moses, went south, apparently died there.
CHOATES in the Revolutionary War
Rev. War Pay voucher # 2384 St. of N. Car. Isaac Chote
" Pay voucher # 2385 " Greenberry Chote
" Pay voucher # 2386 " Moses Chote
Notice the consecutive numbers. All these vouchers were issued August
6, 1782, by the auditors of Washington and Sullivan counties for 6
pounds, 19 shillings and 6 pence and were paid by the State of North
Carolina.
David Chot was pain the same amount by the same people for the same
counties for June 6, 1783.
(I have spent five or six hours, at the very least, looking for an exact
transcription of a court record from Washington county, TN. relating to
the trial and conviction of Isaac Choate for Horse theft. I have seen
the thing typed out since I have been working on this: yet I can't find
it now. The things that bugs me is that I remember the trial of Isaac
as being in August 1782. If so, he had har4dly drawn his last paycheck
for military service when he was tried for horse theft, convicted, and
sentenced for execution on September 10. It could be that the trial was
in August 1783 or 1784).
Now for David. As shown above he was with the other Choates in 1783,
but on May 7, 1784 in Natchez, then Spanish Territory:
JUDITH HOLSEIN VS. DAVID CHOAT
She represents that a certain David Choat has carried off her daughter,
wife of Thomas Holmes, and the child of said Holmes has also been
carried off by said David Choat and her daughter. Said Choat is a man
of infamous conduct in other respects, having stolen horses in the
Province of Cumberland. She prays that consideration for the mother of
a family and order that said Choat desist from having intercourse and
all connection with her daughter and that the child of said daughter may
be placed under the care and protection of your petitioner. Signed:
Judith Holstein
In consequence of the statement in foregoing memo, the Constable was
ordered to bring David Choat and Mrs. Holmes to the fort and place the
child of Mrs. Holmes in the hands of the petitioner.
This court record might seem inconsequential if it did not tie directly
to your quest for background information. But it does.
1. John Choate married Sarah Holstein. Cghurch records in Louisiana
say he was a native of North Carolina: his wife a native of Georgia.
One of his descendants gives his birthdate as 1752. He came to natchez
about 1772. In 1773 or 1774 Stephen Hoilston after whom the Holston
river in Washington is named.

Rufus Choate, grandson of Thomas Kyle Choate, in letter from Elmo,
Kaufman county, TX, December 19, 1904:
"Champion Choate was first cousin to Father. He had several brothers,
Stokly, Edward, Moses, and John. Edward had a son named William. John
had a son that was a doctor. His name was Aut (Augustine). I think
William Choate had a son named Tine.
In the same letter, J. Rufus Choate said that his great-grandfather was
Thomas Choate, killed by Tories at Fort Dinwiddie. He named the
following children of that Thomas: Christopher, David, Tine
(Valentine), Edward, Thomas (Kyle).
In another letter dated Jan. 6, 1906, J. Rufus Choate says: "I can
sware that Edward Choate wa a brother to John (Hawkins) Choate, the
father of Dr Augustine Choate."
Mrs. Caroline Harrison Choate, writing from Lavada, Tx, January 3, 1905,
(She was the wife of Dr. Augustine Martin Choate referred to above).
her father-in-law, John Hawkins Choate, had a brother Ned(Edward), a
sister (Sallie (probably Sarah) who married a Goble, a sister Jane who
married a Willis, and a sister Naomi who married a Pierce.
>From Bible Record preserved in the family of Dr. Augustine Martin
Choate:
John Hawkins Choate born July 17, 1790
Lucinda Choate born Feb. 26, 1789
John and Lucinda were both born Choates (cousins), making it possible
for us to do some figuring.
Jeff D. Choate, son of Augustine Martin and Caroline Harrison, says:
"Uncle Jack Choate was my grandmother's youngest borther." That is, A
Jack Choate was a brother to Lucinda Choate.
Mrs. Caroline Harrison Choate also said that John Hawkins Choate had a
brother Thomas Choate who was killed, leaving one son. The widow
married an Englishmand and moved to Arkansas.
Jeff D. says that this son's name was Green Choate.
With this documentary evidence before us, let's pause a moment and
change direction just a little.
1. The statement in the "identity" instrument in McNairy County on
October 6, 1837 changed the declaration Christopher had made in his
original application for pension. On October 6, he said that his home
before coming to McNairy county had been Lawrence county, TN.
2. The original declaration said that he had lived in Davidson county
until 1823 and had then come to McNairy.
3. Hardin county, Tn, court, January Term 1823, Christopher Choat to
be a allowed $100 for compensation to keeping Mrs. Choat one year.
4. April 1823 term same court: Christopher Choat to be allowed not
more than $133 1/3 for keeping Mrs. Choat.
Comment: I have not found any clue or name for this Mrs. Choat. It
could have been his mother, though he would have been 73 years old at
the time. I think it was more likely that this Mrs. Choate was Ann or
Anna, widow of Thomas Choate killed by Tories in 1778.
A letter to Barry Gordon, Albuquerque, NM, Jan. 29, 1978
9. Petition addressed to James Madison, President, US. by 450 of the
intruders upon the Chicasaw Territory: Received Oct. 1st 1810:
Signer Number
George Bankhead 284
John Bankhead 285
Moses Chot 290
Aaron Shote 341
John Choate 342
Edward Shoat 445
Valentine Shoat 446
John Taylour 447
Thomas Kile 448
Comment: A number of pertinent observations can be made from this list
of names and numbers:
9a. I KNOW from other evidence that John (H) was 20 years old then.
9b. " Edward about 25 years old.
9c. " Valentine was older than either John or " Edward
9d: " Aaron was older than either John or EDward
9e: I SUSPECT that Moses is the oldest of the group.
Further Comment: In the names above can be seen an example of how the
Choate family and other families stuck closely together for several
generations. Number 448 above is Thomer Kile, other Kiles are amongst
the 450 signatures. There you see, I think, the namesake or the son of
the namesake of Thomas Kyle Choate, my wife's ancestor, the father of
PRODENCE, married into the Taylor family. Number 285 is John BANKHEAD.
This is the ancestor of Senator Bankhead and his daughter, Talulah.
Choate related at the generation represented above. (Lawrence County,
Tn, August 4, 1819: Court order to take despoition of JOHN BANKHEAD and
wife in Alabama Territory to be revived in case of John Welch vs John
Counce and in said case an order be made to take deposition of John
Choate in Cumberland County, Kentucky.") On the list of intruders, John
Welch was signer 296, just six after Moses Choate and eleven after John
Bankhead.
Now for another group of intruders: Two years had passed since the
group above had petitioned from Elk River, which is just below the
present Tennessee-Alabama boundary almost under Lawrence county, Tn.
Now in 1812, the following people were evicted from the Congressional
Reserve (Western Tennessee):
Aron Choat
Squire Choat
John R. Choat
Christopher Choat

Whew....that's the end. It took longer than I thought. I did not
change any spelling.

Barbara,
Have I mentioned, it only got worse? I uncovered several bits of
conflicting information. The Livingston, TX library has quite a bit of info
if anyone can get there. For such a small library, they have a good
genealogy section. The books they have are quite helpful - including some
good ones for VA and other states. I also talked to Wanda Bobinger, who
runs the Polk Co. Historical Museum. She has a file on Moses Choate's
family that has some data that's not in the library. Unfortunately, the
person who had done the most work, a Don Hendrix, has died. He left a lot
of work, but no documentation other than he did list court records
concerning the Choate/Oliphant families - and believe me, there were plenty
of them! There's a big question for them as to when and where Moses died,
although I believe it's in Polk Co in 1867. Moses and Ursula had sold their
homestead, and were planning to move, but I'm convinced Moses died before
they could. I haven't found Moses or Ursula in the 1870 census anywhere,
including Polk or Karnes Co. I'll be happy to share more if you have
questions. I'm trying to put this all together with the documentation I
have, but May has turned into one of the busiest months in ages...Happy
hunting. Jane
