Looking for information on Zelda (Zerilda, Zerilla etcetera) Choate born
in Polk County Texas around 1840. She is my great great granmother.
She
married J.M. Choate in 1869 in Bell County Texas. Marriage information
I found gives her last name as 'Thompson', however her maiden name was
Choate. I am assuming she married someone named Thompson, lived in Bell
County, had a daughter, then shortly thereafter married J.M. Choate.
Looking for some information on
her possible first marriage to a Thompson.
Zelda Choates parents were Moses L. and Ursula Choate. Moses came from
Tennessee to Texas around 1822, went to Kentucky and married Ursula in
1826 and then returned to Texas with Ursula and several children and
settled in Polk County/City of Livingston Texas area in the early
1830's.
Any information or leads would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Robbi Adams
I wonder if this is the Moses and Ursula that you might be looking for.
I will out of town, again, for a few days but I am sure there are others than can fill in
any gaps..................Bev

This is a undoubtedly a hoax (the latest of many with the same "Virus
Warning" subject). There's no way that simply reading an email can erase
your entire hard drive. The only way this could happen is if the email had
an evil "trojan horse" application attached-- and only after you ran the
evil application.

Jackie,
That information that was from a vertical file that I found at the Clayton Genealogy
Library when I was in Houston, TX. It was from a James E. Herring in Palestine, TX. It
was in a Dalton family file and not a Choate file. There was no Choate file, at all.
This letter was written from some cousin of his, 27 Aug 1945.
The letter states:
John Owens was b. in Assumption Parish, LA, in 1807, and d. in Harris Co., TX, in 1864;
married (2nd) in 1840 to Jane Choate, born in St. Landry Parish, LA, in 1816, died in
West Columbus, TX, 1873.
Jane Choate was a daughter of Thomas Choate and his wife Jane Dalton. Thomas Choate was
born in TN in 1779, died in Harris Co., TX, in 1840, married in St. Landry Parish, LA, in
1809, Miss Jane Dalton, who was born in MS in 1792 or 3, died in Harris Co., TX, in 1843.
Jane Dalton was a dau of William Gallahue Dalton. Then stapled to this letter was a
Pedigree Chart from a B.J.Stolsek of Cantrall, IL. This chart shows Ezekiel Choat marr.
to Margaret McFatridge and Ezekiel has a dau. as Jane Choat Vaughan 1841-1887.
Then this Stolsek shows Ezekiel's father is Greenberry Choate (1751-1842). Then
Greenberry's parents as Johnathan Choat (1708-1762) and Elizabeth Moody.
Then Johnathan's parents as Rev. Benjamin Choate and Abigail Burnham.
Evidently these people, Herring and his cousin, were going over their Choate lineage and
comparing it to other Choates.
But there is another sentence that states that Thomas Choate and Jane Dalton had a son
named (it looks like) King Ewell Choate, and also had a daughter named Kenner D. Choate.
Following that is "Most of my information comes from a cousin, Mrs. John Harbour McGee of
Greenwood, MS". From there it continues with more Dalton family history.
I have not had the time to get this stuff copied and send to Irene---but plan to do that
soon.
If there is anything else------------let me know.
Always, Bev

Always, Bev
Bev,
I am finally back at my computer after a much too long absence. I've been
going thru messages I hadn't had time to read much less respond to. This
is in response to some info. you sent out on the line of Jane Choate Owens,
dau. of Thomas Choate b. TN in 1779 and died in Harris Co., TX in 1840. In
this letter you list Greenberry Choate as the son of Johnathan and
Elizabeth Moody Choate. I have not seen this before. You also list
Ezekiel Choate as the son of Greenberry b.1751 VA and my information
indicates he was possibly the "grandson" of Greenberry through my ancestor,
Nicholas.
Chapman's HISTORY OF JOHNSON COUNTY gives the following information. I
have found several mistakes in this history so this is definitely not
considered "proven".
"The Choat family, who were Irish, is a large one and they were very
early settlers here but it seems impossible to get any lineage from the
ones now living, from the best information they must have come here early
in the nineteenth century. The following is from a granddaughter of
Nicholas Choat. She says he came from Kentucky .. . . . . . . He had five
sons and three daughters. Ezekiel Choat was one.. . . . . . Ezekiel
married Margaret McFatridge, daughter to William.. . . . . . ."
Wonder where Mrs. Chapman got the idea that the Choates were Irish?
In a 1990 JOHNSON COUNTY HISTORY & FAMILIES there are two entries on the
early Choat/Choate family. The info. submitted by William Lawrence says
that Ezekiel b.1801-d.1843 is the son of Nicholas and Jane Smith, daughter
of Ezekiel Smith.
The info. submitted by Sue McComas (a descendant of Issac C. Choat, son of
Squire, son of Greenberry) doesn't mention Ezekiel but she does say that
Greenberry b. 1751 Va. is descended from John Choate immigrant to Ipswich,
Mass.
It seems no one has the same info. which indicates to me that it is all
supposition and guess work and assumptions. Very confusing.
If you have any further information on the above mentioned Choates I would
sure appreciate it. Even if it isn't proven, it is a clue, another trail
to follow.
Thanks,
Jackie

Has some good info.............Bev
Hello Wiley: As it happens I was in the Family History Center today and
while looking for something else saw records pertaining to the Estate of
Edward Choat, deceased in the Robertson Co. TN in Book 8 (1827-35),
p278-279 of the Wills and Inventories. Several Choat heirs were named, so
you might want to take a look at it. The LDS film number was 0425199. I'm
not sure which film would have the actual will since I wasn't really
looking for Choats today. However the same film also has Book 6 & Book 7 on
it so it's possible it's on one of them. If not, check an even earlier book
and film number. Since I wasn't looking for Choats, I didn't really observe
whether Valentine was listed or not, but as stated, you can check it.
Hope this helps.
Hello: Larry alerted me that a little item was left off the URL for the web
site.
It is: http://members.tripod.com/~Crystalblue/home.html
From there you can click on directly to the Choate genealogy on her site.
Hello all: Went browsing on the web today and found a web site of a Choate
descendant which many of you may find of interest. It is that of Debra kay
Neiman which begins with the Neiman Family Genealogy but has clickable
links to her Choate genealogy along with printable family group sheets.
If you want to take a look, the URL is:
