Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Received a very nice letter from Irene Choate Williams. She states that the information
on that Dr. Christopher Shute that I found, is definitely not a Choate. She enclosed a
page from one of her books that explains the following:
CHOATE'S IN ENGLAND
The name CHOATE has been spelled many ways, among them CHOAT, CHOTTE, CHOTE, CHOT &
CHOATES. In many records we find the name spelled SHOATE, SHOAT, SHOTE, SHOT etc. This
was largely due to the fact that people spelled a name as it sounded and most people
pronounced it SHOAT, a fact that still exists today, and we still find different
spellings, however the most common spelling is CHOATE.
Lowers "Patronymica Britannic" states that Choate is probably the same as Chute, but
researcher for both families have found them to be two distinct and different family
names.
It is thought by most that Choate is a French name and that the Choate family immigrated
to Brahant, Holland from France. Sometime in the 16th century the family moved from
Holland into the eastern part of England, prob. Near the boundary in Essex and Soffolk
counties.
In Holland the family used the name Van-Choate, but because of the prejudice of the
English against the Dutch immigrants they dropped the VAN from the name upon coming to
England. The name Van-Choate is presumably still being used in and near Antwerp.
So, you can forget that info on Christopher Shute.
Irene also corrected my database in that I had Thomas Kyle Choate's daughter Prudence
marrying Isham Dykes. Irene said that she married a Stokely Choate---which I do not have
any information on at all. If anyone can fill me in on this part of the Choate family, I
would be grateful.
Thanks, As Always, Bev Casey
Fellow Choate researchers I have forwarded this entire notice for the whole
list to read. As usual, there are some bad apples that try to spoil it for
all. There have been some problems with some of the other lists on the
rootsweb service, the CHOATE list is not among them. I am posting this for
those of you who may be on other list so that you know what the policy is.
Yes there is a cost to putting a list on rootsweb. A kind donation by one
of the listowners made this list possible, which has increased greatly
since we have been able to put it on rootsweb and advertise. I want to
take this opportunity to state, and this will be the only time I state
this, there is no requirement or request for donations for membership to
this list.
As always, I am here to monitor the list so that it runs smoothly, and to
help when possible. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to
email me at anytime. I will reply.

Subject: Policy: RootsWeb Lists Are Free!
Hi all -
Hundreds of listowners and users have now given us input on the
issues of whether listowners should be able to charge money or
request personal information as a prerequisite for participating in
a list, and Karen and I are now convinced that extreme behavior by
some listowners could affect the whole listowner and user community
by discouraging users from participating in any of our lists.
Hence we'd like to formally announce policy that:
RootsWeb Lists Are Free!
Users should be able to subscribe to lists without being required to
pay money and without being required to provide personal information.
While we are willing to let bygones be bygones, future violations
may result in a listowner being asked to relocate their lists to
another server.
IMPORTANT NOTES
The foregoing policy does not apply to the few lists, for example
the HCPD-L list for the Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants
organization, that exist specifically for the members of an
established organization. Explicit permission must be obtained from
Karen or Brian for lists that want to operate in this paying-
members-only fashion.
The foregoing policy does not prevent listowners from being able to
ask list subscribers to voluntarily provide contact information and
such. The point is that subscribers may not be *required* to
provide that information: explain why you need the information and
that providing the information is VOLUNTARY, then be tolerant of the
folks who choose not to provide it.
The foregoing policy does not prevent listowners or subscribers from
soliciting voluntary contributions for family associations or other
causes, so long as the purpose of the fund-raising is specified and
the subscribers are told that participation is completely voluntary.
With regards to purpose of the fund-raising, listowners must *never*
give the impression they are fund-raising for RootsWeb or for the
physical support of the list unless the funds are intended for
RootsWeb.
A PLEA FOR SENSIBILITY
Please do not ask me or Karen to provide a detailed exegesis of this
policy: just use your common sense and, if a particular situation
seems unclear, bring it to the "listowners" list and ask our peers
for their thoughts.
Let's keep our subscribers happy and participation in our lists
growing. Cheers, B.

Connie,
Hi, my name is Mollie and I am researching Choate in Tennessee. Send me
an E-Mail on your line and I will see if I can help. I live in Ashland
City which is not that far away from The Nashville Sate Library and
Archives. And maybe I can help.
Mollie
Hi Connie: Although I don't have material specific to your query on your
Choate line I can at least give you and others seeking the New England line
of Choates. They have a copy of this book in the Los Angeles main branch,
perhaps in yours also. It is "John Choate and His Descendants 1643-1896" by
E.O. Jameson. It was published in 1896 and I've no idea if anyone has ever
reissued it. This particular book cover the New England line of Choates
beginning with John Choate, son of Robert & Sarah Choate, born 1624 in
Groton, England, going to his American emigration to Ipswich, MA. It is the
only book I am aware of that extensively covers this line (outside of a few
books that include the MA Choates as part of their allied lines). Let me
know if you cannot find it locally. I am not sure if it has ever been filmed
by the Mormons or not but you might want to check your local Family History
Center. If you still can't find it, let me know and when I have time I would
be willing to do a look up.
