For anyone who might be interested, I found a reference to a Moses L. Choate.
From the book "Indian Wars and Pioneers of TX" by John Henry Brown on page 18 there is a
reference to him as being "the first actual settlers arrived in April, 1822 (in Harris
County, TX) ,of whom were Moses L. Choate and William Pettus on the San Jacinto, along
with a surveyor named Ryder, unmarried, settled on Morgan's Point, on the bay.

This is in response to a query re: Thomas Choate and Mary Ann Welch. This
shows the ancestry of what I have picked up on the Choate line that everyone
has posted, and what I have on the Welch line as well. Please let me know of
corrections and/or additions.
Thanks Flora
Ancestors of James CHOATE - 28 Aug 1997
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
FIRST GENERATION
1. James CHOATE was born on 12 Jul 1833 in Putnam co., TN "Pullam Place".
He was buried in Pullam Place Cemetery. James was living with James and
Rachel Choate Cole in 1850.
SECOND GENERATION
2. Thomas CHOATE died between 1850 and 1853 in Putnam co., TN. He was born
in NC. He is the line of wenckens(a)flash.net.
3. Mary Ann WELCH. Thomas CHOATE and Mary Ann WELCH had the following
children:
1 i. James CHOATE.
ii. Austin CHOATE was born in 1836 in TN. He died between 1861 and 1864.
iii. John CHOATE was born in 1836 in TN. He died between 1861 and 1864.
John was living with Holland and Lucinda Choate Denton with his sister
Polly in the 1860 census.
iv. Mary (Polly) CHOATE was born on 8 Feb 1839 in TN. She died on 22 Nov
1887. She was buried in Bradford cemetery, Cookeville, TN. Polly lived with
Holland and Lucinda Choate Denton for 20 years.
v. Rachael CHOATE was born in 1840.
THIRD GENERATION
4. Austin CHOATE Jr.. Curtis Medder Sarah's son lived with Austin and Oma
until Sarah married
William Ramsey, so the grandson will show up on the census until 1840.
Austin and Oma may have been first cousins. His mother and her father may
have been brother and sister and full blood Cherokees. He was married to
Naomi (Oma) PYBURN in NC?.
5. Naomi (Oma) PYBURN. Oma is supposed to be full blood Cherokee. She
lived with the Cherokee
tribe in NC but was not taken on the removal or "trail of tears" to Indian
Territory She married Austin, who was reputed to be half Cherokee and half
white and they lived as white people from that time on. Many descendents
have tried to claim allotments of indian lands and funds based on the
indian blood of these two but have always been turned down. Austin CHOATE
Jr. and Naomi (Oma) PYBURN had the following children:
i. Elizabeth CHOATE was born between 1792 and 1802. Nancy and Harrison

with their mother Elizabeth in White Co. in 1850
ii. Sarah (Sally) CHOATE was born in NC. Sarah had a son Curtis Medder
CHOATE born ca 1826, before she married
William RAMSEY so the 1830 census shows one male child under age 5 and one
daughter under five. The 1850 census shows two daughters born in 1830 so
I thought they were twins, but maybe not.......Curtis lived with Sarah and
her parents until she married.
2 iii. Thomas CHOATE.
iv. Nancy CHOATE was born in Jackson co. TN. Nancy was living with her
father not her husband in the 1850 census of
Jackson co. TN

Jamestown, TN. Austin and wife Mary were in Putnam co. TN in the 1860 census
and in
Fentress co. TN in the 1870 census. We can assume that they moved to
Fentress to be nearer relatives during the war years.
vi. John CHOATE was born in Jackson co. TN. The Lucinda that was listed
with this family in 1860 is not theirs, She was just visiting. See family of
James and Celia CHOATE who lived nearby also listed Lucinda age 3.
vii. Edward CHOATE died on 29 Aug 1894 in Cookeville, Putnam co. TN.. He
was born in Jackson co. TN/NC?. He was buried in Choate cemetery.
viii. Rachel CHOATE died in May 1874. Rachel married her first cousin
James Cole. This makes the third marriage
in this family between first cousins. my my my. . . . . . not to mention
Sally's little mistake with Curtis Medder??? Now I know what kissing
cousins are..

256. Christopher (CHOTT) CHOATE was born before 1593 in ENGLAND. He was
buried on 25 Sep 1615 in Halstead Parish, Essex Co., England.13 He is the
line of from willettj(a)idd.net. There was a Christopher Chott who was a
witness in a court case in
Halstead in 1611.
"When Philip II of Spain, in the year 1567, with a few strokes of his pen,
doomed to death 80,000 inhabitants of the Netherlands, how little he knew
what he was doing. He did not foresee the results of this act of cruelty.
He did not dream that t Duke of Alva's bloody work would sow the seeds of
liberty on the eastern shores of England, and from thence, within a
century, they would be scattered beyond the wide Atlantic. These
Hollanders, escaping the relentless grasp of the Inquisition, we
liberty-loving and industrious. They fled their lowland homes, across the
waves, to make other homes, and under their persevering culture the fens
of eastern England became as gardens. And it is publicly claimed that
nearly all the political institutions which are the glory of America came
by them through England out of Holland. While the early origin of the
Choates is in obscurity, and while it is quite possible that at a still
earlier period they were immigrants to Holland from France (Huguenots),
yet it is highly probable that they crossed over from the Netherlands into
eastern part of Britain with some of the numerous migrations of the
sixteenth century, and were perhaps among those refugees who fled the
Inquisition of the bloody court of Alva. In their lowland homes, in the
province of Brabant, they were known by the name of Van Choate, but it is
thought that on account of English prejudice against Dutch immigrants,
they were constrained on their arrival in the new country to drop the Va
from their name, and thus obliterate at once a conspicuous symbol of their
obnoxious origin, and henceforth in England and in America they have been
known by the simple name of CHOATE. But to this day in and about Antwerp,
and wherever in Holland are found, the name is still VAN CHOATE. Thier
first settlement in England was doubtless near the boundary between Essex
and Suffolk counties, in which region are still many of the name." This is
from "The Choates in America" by E. O. Jameson. Printed in 1896. Known
Facts: In 1533 a widow, Isabel Choate, and her sons, John, William,
Christopher, and Robert; her daughter, Margaret, and her maid, Katherine,
were arrested for being Wycliffites. Also Thomas Choate and his wife and
32 others. All of them we from Birdbrook Parish. The first Choates in
Birdbrook were John Choate and Thomas Choate, listed on the Lay Subsidy
Rolls in 1524. Since the early parish records for Birdbrook are missing,
it is not possible to trace the descent of John and Thoma but, the arrest
record of Isabel Choate and family, along with Thomas Choate and wife; the
will of a widow, Elizabeth Choate in 1568, naming her children; Richard,
Ann, Thomas, Joseph, Edward, and Robert; land and court records all
indicate a stron possibility of Isabel being the wife of John Choate and
Elizabeth being the wife of Thomas Choate. There was a Christopher Chott who
was a witness in a court case in
Halstead in 1611.
Christopher (CHOTT) CHOATE had the following children:
128 i. Christopher (CHOTTE) CHOATE Sr..

I think that this would be an excellent oppurtunity to generate some
discussion on the CHOATE list. Here is my idea.
Some of the other list post what is called a Roll Call. This is where each
person on the list post their family charts or surname list so that
everyone in the list can see it and maybe make some connections. Since we
have recently converted the group over to the CHOATE mail list, and since
there are several new members that have subscribed to the list. I think
this would be a good idea so that every one knows which CHOATE lines are
being researched.
Just a thought,
Dianna Choate Blair, List Owner

This was sent to me, I am forwarding it to the group an hope that someone
can help out.

Hello Choate Gang!
I just thought I would take a minute and let you know what is happening.
Rootsweb, which host a huge number of list, including the CHOATE list, has
had such an increase in the overall subscribition of various list that
their mail server became sick, crashing several times a day. They will
over the next few days be changing over to a new server. This will cause a
bit of down time, and possibly a few minor gliches. Not to worry, it will
be better in the long run.
I just wanted the list to be aware of the situation in case any questions
arise. As always, feel free to ask any questions. I am here.
Dianna Choate Blair, list owner
<< Hello all,
Thank you Dianna & Karen for the CHOATE surname list. My interest in
the list is to find out the surname of the wife of Sabret CHOATE Jr. (d.
1821).
Wool/dfol/rk which could it be ? I have yet to find anyone working the
Wool/dfol/rk line. My family descends from their daughter Sarah who m.
David
Isom of Grayson Co. VA in 1823. Glad to share with anyone in the Sabret

Hi,
My husband is the Choate and his sister is beginning the genealogy tracing.
We are having a reunion tomorrow (8/10/97) of my father-in-laws siblings. I
am hoping to pass on all that I have collected. My husband is a member of
the Choates in America Society or Association out of Ipswich MA or Amesbury
(north eastern Mass. somewhere) and is a descendant of the New England
Choates. Sincerely, Karen Barnard Choate
