Two men were walking home after a party and decided to take a shortcut
through the cemetery just for laughs. Right in the middle of the
cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the
misty shadows. Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a
hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.
"Holy cow, Mister," one of them said after catching his breath, "You
scared us half to death -- we thought you were a ghost! What are you
doing working here so late at night?"
"Those fools!" the old man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!"
Am posting my husband's line (note that this goes back in time, not forward),
What I need help with is that Emeline is supposed to be part Cherokee --

Hi all - I've been away for 3 months, so missed quite a lot. I apologize if
this has been discussed before. I have Greenberry Choate, b 1751 VA, as
father to Squire/Esquire Choate born 8 Jul 1786 TN, and possible father to
Nicholas and Sabert. I have a feeling there is confusion here between two
separate families, and if anyone else is looking at either Greenberry or
Squire/Esquire, could you update me? I would also like to know who
Greenberry's father was, as I can't seem to see a connection to Christopher
of Anne Arundel Co. MD. or his family. Thanks - Maria
Hi Dianna.
Things are slow on the CHOATE list. I am allways interested in any
descendant of Sabret (b. 1730) and I am still hoping to find someone
researching the Woolfol/rk family. One of them (Mary) m. Sabret Jr. ( 1779
in Henry Co. VA)
Chester Stevenson Eugene, OR.
Greetings,
I have been doing some work on the mail list and wanted to let you all know
about one of those silly computer things that happen from time to time.
Somehow, my name was dropped from the subscribtion list. I did not realize
that this was the case until I sent out a posting about some photos, I
never recieved the posting.
I hope that this has not happened to anyone else. If you know of anyone
that may have been, please contact me.
The next thing is our growth. We have increased our numbers in the last
month significantly. So much so that I would like for everyone to post a
brief indexing or lineage of their CHOATE line along with locations that
are known and dates. Especially post anyone that you are stuck on, and
please give allied surnames when possible. Since the CHOATEs migrated with
similar families, there was a significant amount of same family lines
developed.
To all the newer members, welcome aboard. I am here to help you if I can,
if I can't I will try to find someone who can. I am still publishing my
Texas CHOATEs newsletters, and have gathered so much information that I
have decided to put together information I find for a one name study and
then publish it. Naturally as the lines leave out of TX, (working
backwards time wise) I will then try to include information from other
areas.
Look forward to getting something going on the mail list.
As always,
Dianna Choate Blair
Hello gang,
I have been looking for things I put up again and found some photos I took
at a graveyard in New Hope, TN I believe. The stones are for the following
CHOATEs and would be happy to share them with someone if it is their line.
The names are:
Susan Chote Henderson 1880-1930
CHOAT
Angelina 1847-1927
&
John 1834-1902
Sally A. Choate 1880 - 1911
Feel free to email if you would like a copy of these. It was my
understanding that shortly after we were there, a fire destroyed alot of
these. We were there in Aug. of 1988 I believe and they had told us that
another cemetery of the Civil War Veterans had been destroyed by teen agers
on the 4th of July. Please don't hold me to this information though.
Take care,
Dianna

There was also a NC census listing for Moses Shoat for 1790 Burke Co., Morgan Dist., 9th
Co. along with Saybort Shoat, Christi Shoat, Christi Jr., and Austin Shoate in the same
location. (Irene Choate Williams says she checked many records in Burke Co. around 1790
and did not find one record of any of the above men (listed in census). She believes they
were in other counties near the Burke line. The Rev. War pay vouchers and Land Grant
records place them in Washington and Sullivan Cos., TN.
Moses Shoat showed 1 male 16-up, 2 males 16-under, 1 female in this 1790 census.

These are 2 applications for CHOATES found in the Indian Rolls available
through the National Archives (for $10 each) and are also listed in Jerry
Jordan's "Cherokee by Blood." Though some of you may be unfamiliar with the
application forms there are 22 questions which requested information which
was to help verify claim of Cherokee heritage and in the instance of the
Guion Miller rolls for which this was done, to ascertain membership in the
Cherokee Nation for purposes of land distribution (i.e. dissolution of
tribal holdings to individual tribal members); however, here I am only going
to detail those questions which yielded information rather than detail each
and every question. This is not typed absolutely verbatim but as close to
it as I could get for these purposes. Hope it helps someone. If they are
yours let me know where they fit into your Choate line. regards, PJ

Mr. Ken Choate in Afton, OK sent me family information on Mary Rainbolt's ancestors. I
didn't want to clutter anyone up--but if this is in your line, please let me know and I
will be happy to e-mail whatever I was given, as Ken does not have a computer.
If you are interested in the Gabriel and Ephraim Choat line---Ken has a wealth of
information he would be willing to share if you want to snail mail him.

This is for the spelling of CHOAT only...will do others later. The letter and numbers
prior to the names are the soundex coding. Hope this helps...sharing is what it is all
