Please, everyone, if you are going to make a copy of an old fragile document use a digital camera and upload it to your computer!!
Please don't attempt to scan or photocopy old bibles or documents.
Even a cheap throwaway digital camera makes a pretty good photo. And it can be edited to improve the contrast and light on it. Then, all you have to do is send it as an attachment to whomever you want to,have it.
My husband and I have over 100,000 digital photos of old photo, doc., bibles, books.... You name it! And they are there always! The original can then be put in archival containers and kept SAFE!
Just hoping to preserve our heritage... Thanks,

David Chitwood. He came to Indiana and bought some land from the US government. He and his wife are buried on that land and it is still owned by family. It's amazing when a large family takes off in different directions how years later the whole US is populated by a family!

Notes for James Chitwood:
James Chitwood served in the Rev. War as a private, receiving a pension. He
came to TN in 1795 with Shadrack Chitwood, his son James, and a son of
Mathis. He took his family to Pulaski Co KY (later Whitley Co KY) and
secured land patents. This land fell into Campbell Co TN when the State line
was re surveyed and then became part of Scott Co TN when Campbell Co. Was
divided. James is listed as one of the first families of TN.
Transcription from Revolutionary War information given on James Chitwood:

joined the army at Orangeburg about the last of January or first of February
At this time the army was divided into several detachments - and a number
of the troops were furlowed - after a number of marches and charges - the
troops met at New Market about the fifteenth of April - where they were to
receive their bounty of one Negro each but the bounty was not paid to any of
them at that time. The troops were then discharged by Captain Phillip Waters

A letter from the St. Louis Genealogy Society: "James Chitwood Hears from a
friend in St. Louis, 1809 (originally contributed by Margaret Heinek). This
letter, written by Thomas Thomson to James Chitwood of western North
Carolina, was found in a log cabin in Mitchell Co., NC -- the area was
Buncombe Co in 1809.
Louisianna St. Louis District May 26, 1809
Dr friend this is to inform you that I arrived in this country six weeks
from the day that I left or started from that country landing in St. Louis
and live ten miles above that town and I also live one mile from Richard
Chitwood and I with my family is well and generally has had our health since
we left you. I have not been much through the country to give you a full
description of my idea but little as I have seen this is according to my
judgment is the best part of the country that ever I have been in and I also
like much better than I expected and I should and dont resent the troubled
moving and traveling a month or six weeks to make so good an exchange and I
want all my well wishers to take the same consideration for the benefit of
themselves and their children for in this country I can maintain my family
in six months better than there in the hole year. I will give you a little
description of what we have made in hunting of bees and fishing. On the 5th
day of February I and my boys found 13 bee trees and a few days ago I caut a
fish that weighted 106 pound and was 11 inches between the eyes There is a
number of little things that I might send you to draw your attention but
time and opportunity won't permit My family is all satisfied and joynes me
in compliments and we asign ourselves yours XX
farewell
Mr. James Chitwood Thomas Thomson
(on the reverse side)
"Richard Chitwoods family and your Bettys family is in good health. Your
brothers Seth and John Chitwood is well I wish you to wright to me imeadetly
after you receive these lines then I will give you a account of my opinion
of this country as I don't no whether you will receive it and I send it by
the post and you can also send by the post to St. Louis post office."
With the letter appears a list of names and some figures in pounds,
shillings, and pence, apparently money owed to the recipient of the letter.
The names: "myself" (Mrs. Heinek states that this was either William or
Thomas Wilson), Ahigh Wilson, Nathan Deton, Wm. Engle, Rd Wilson, John Ray,
John Grefeth, Betty Grefeth, Rachel Grefeth."
In the article Mrs. Heinek believes "Betty" to be Isabella Chitwood
Whiteside, wife of Thomas, whose sister, Katy, married William Burts.
However, James Chitwood, son of Richard Chitwood, had brothers named Seth
and John, both who moved to MO; and James had a daughter named Betty. He
also had a sister named Betty who married a Thomas Whiteside.
Excerpts from Queen & Crescent Route Brochure - published c.1913 (Scott Co.
Historical Society - Winter 1990): "WINFIELD, TENN. 204 miles from
Cincinnati, 134 miles from Chattanooga; Altitude 1,321 feet, Population 400
- In the midst of very rich coal fields, this place will become a trading
center and shipping point of importance. Within view of the station is the
old Chitwood homestead, which, like Pine Knot Tavern, was a hospitable
stopping place for travelers before the railway. The log house was a true
pioneer homestead. The spinning wheel stood by the fireplace, with a loom on
the porch, where the family supply of clothing was manufactured 'by hand'.
Antlers hung over the doorways and the skins of wild animals covered the
walls. The mountains on the east are the Jellico Range, which encloses the
basin of Jellico Creek, a large, undeveloped coal field. Three miles south
is a branch line, built to serve some extensive coal-mining operations."
James Chitwood's Uncle, Capt. James Chitwood, was a Tory who was executed
after the battle of King's Mountain, as reported in the papers of Draper
(see info on Capt. James Chitwood). It is very probable that James was named
for his Uncle.
