Hello.
I am a great-grandson of Ellen's sister, Malinda Jane "Jane" Blankenship Lewallen. Jane died before I was born so I never knew her, but my grandmother Ruby (Jane's daughter) lived until age 90 and she and I spoke of her ancestors many times. She never mentioned anything about there being any Native American ancestry in her background.
However, I've heard from other parts of the family that Ellen & Jane's paternal grandmother, Malinda Trammell Blankenship, was of "Black Dutch" descent and could cure a sick baby of illness by "blowing across its face."
Wikipedia describes "Black Dutch" as follows: "Black Dutch is an unofficial American ethnic designation. It was commonly used in Pennsylvania among ethnic Germans, some of whom migrated south to Virginia and other points. Separately, it became adopted around 1830 and afterward among certain Southeastern families of mixed-race ancestry, especially those of Cherokee descent." So I suppose the possibility of Native American heritage exists.
I would be very interested in corresponding with anyone researching this Blankenship family. In particular, I would be very excited to see any photos of Ellen Blankenship Chitwood or other family members. I've never seen any photos of her (or of several of her siblings--Susan, Columbus, Alvin Hawkins, Nancy, Ledford, Noah, Della), nor of their father, Henderson "Henry" Blankenship. I have photos of a few others of her siblings (Malinda Jane, Baty, Ludlo, Lewis), one of their mother, Perneta "Nita" Jane Thompson Blankenship, and one of their paternal grandparents Canada Blankenship & Malinda Trammell Blankenship (mentioned above) that I'd be happy to share.
Thanks,
John C. Carter

Anna, trying to find out if you are still reachable at this address. Have collected more information on Jarvis and Ellen over the years and also would like to resume our conversations on your own father. (My grandmother was Charity, sister to Coney.)
Please respond if you receive this. Thanks.
