Hi, I am a descendant of Richard Chitwood, last child of Matthias and Mary Key Chitwood. I do not mean to be confrontational as I have not worked on the Chitwood in a couple of years as my line through Richard is fairly straightforward.
My question--was the connection between Matthias Chitwood [I have never seen it written ChEtwood] to the English Chetwood family established beyond a speculation that they were related? I know people on this board had long discussions about several years ago but did not realize a primary source had been found. They probably were the same family but without documentation it will remain a speculation. My apologies if I missed it; I would appreciate a url to the citation so I can add it to my database.
Also, coincidentally I live about 30 miles from where Captain James was hanged--there is a complete account in the "Descendants of Matthias Chitwood" Captain James was hung in October 1780 near a little community. Every year there is an "Over the mountain men" re-enaction & celebration that traces the route of the patriots down from the mountains and through Gillespie Gap on their way to King's Mountain. The battle was in early October in 1780, not 1783. CPT James and the others were hung 14 October 1780.
The book "Kings Mountain and its heroes" by Lyman C Draper is available full text at google books--do a search for Chitwood and you can follow the progress of ths Over the Mountain Men including the hanging of the tories.
