It is my opinion that the death date, often repeatedas before 1858, for Lazarus Chitwood, born 1778, is incorrect.
The 1850 Federal Census has Lazarus and Mary Chitwood in DeSoto, County,MS.In his household were James, John & Francis Marion; children of his son, Nelson. In a bordering county is widowed second wife of Nelson, who did go to Smith county, TX with her stepson James.Francis Marion was in the household of Pleasant S. Parker on 1860 census,Chickasaw,Co., MS & joined 17th Vol. Infantry and was killed at Chickamauga. I believe to have been a 1st cousin to PS Parker.

Hi Susan
If you find documentation of Matthias CHETWODE / CHITWOOD's parents, you will have the undying gratitude of several hundred fervent researchers.
A large number of us have spent years - both in England and in the States - searching for this information. We have tons of information on CHETWODEs in England, and we have more tons of information on CHITWOODs in the U S. However, we have not been able to confirm - and I do mean confirm, as there are lots of possibilities and guesses - the parentage of Matthias and, therefore, the connection between the England CHETWODEs and the U S CHITWOODs.
I, personally, believe that his parents are Thomas - but not the one born in 1630 - and an Elizabeth of the great family "Unknown", but I, too, have no documented proof of that. Eleanor is another strong possibility, given the naming patterns of Matthias' and Mary's children. (She often is shown as "BUSHOP" but just as often shown as "BISHOP".) Another possibility is Elizabeth FENTON, and there are others.
One reason why I believe in the Thomas and Elizabeth possibility is that there are other CHETWODEs shown in various records in London born in the years around Matthias' birth date, *possible* siblings?, children of "Thomas and Elizabeth CHETWODE". I have seen none for a "Thomas and Elenor / Eleanor CHETWODE".
I think that the Hereford theory of Matthias' birthplace has no factual foundation, but that's only because I have found no indication other than someone's online posting - which always needs further research and cannot be taken as proof. I think that someone posted that and then it was copied and recopied by others. I have found no CHETWODE family at all in the Hereford area in all of my research, but I have found London CHETWODEs and Virginia CHITWOODs. Same with his marriage in Shropshire. But... maybe I just haven't *found* the proof yet.
There were bezillions of CHETWODEs in Buckinghamshire (Chetwode, Buckinghamshire, England) in earlier years, then they moved up to Oakley Hall (retaining ownership of Chetwode Manor) in Staffordshire when an earlier CHETWODE married the daughter of the owner of Oakley Hall. There they lived up until fairly recent times. A "second son" (in other words, a son who was not the first-born and, therefore, would not inherit the lands) moved to London, which is where part of the CHETWODE family still resides.
One reason why I think Matthias' father was not the 1630 Thomas is because records show his death date as 1678 - and Matthias' birth date as 1681. Don't think that they had sperm banks back then.....
The most popular version of Matthias' genealogy shows a Thomas CHETWODE (born London) who married Elizabeth WAKE at St Clement Danes, London, in 1620. (This is well documented). Next, their son, Thomas, who was born in 1630 in London and christened at St Clement Danes and married an Elizabeth. Then yet another Thomas who married yet another Elizabeth and who was born 1653, *possibly* even in Virginia! (The first time that we have found the name Thomas CHETWODE / CHEATWOOD / CHITWOOD in Virginia is 1652, when he was granted land. That would suggest that an adult Thomas CHETWODE could have been in Virginia in 1653 at the time of the third Thomas' birth.)
The second Thomas died in Virginia, which lends further weight to the feasiblilty of the third Thomas having been born in Virginia - and *just possibly* Matthias, also, although it is commonly believed that he was born in London. With a father who traveled back and forth between London and Virginia, he could have been born either place. It's just been frustrating that, in spite of a wealth of recorded births still extant in England, none of us has been able to find Matthias' (or even a Matthew in the same time period) record. Who's to say, then, that he couldn't have been born in Virginia?
This second Thomas brought boatloads of people from England to Virginia and was given a great deal of land for his efforts, and this, too, is quite well documented.
So, what I am saying is keep searching, searching, searching! You will find people's guesses all over the place - I just gave you mine. What you really need is DOCUMENTATION of his parentage. Several of us have combed the available records for the time period in England (I have scoured various archives in London on several trips with no joy and others have, too, including a couple of them who live in England and at least one professional genealogist.) However, some day some one WILL find that proof - assuming that it still exists!
If I were launching another avenue of research for this family, after years of not finding proof in England, I would look carefully at records in Virginia. I know, not many exist compared to England, but if the second Thomas died in Virginia and the third Thomas was born, *possibly* married, and died in Virginia - and Matthias certainly lived in Virginia..... then there should be some sort of records somewhere in that area for these people. Marriage records, christening records, death records, church records, land records, wills (we have Matthias' will), someone's diary, whatever there was back in that timeframe in Virginia.
Have you joined Rootsweb's CHITWOOD list yet? I am forwarding a copy of this email to that list, but you might want to sign up if you haven't already. That's where you post questions and theories and requests and other researchers respond. Good bunch of people. And it's easy:
"To join CHITWOOD-L, send mail to CHITWOOD-L-request(a)rootsweb.com with the single word subscribe in the message subject and body."
Possibly other researchers on the List will share their ideas. There certainly are some good ones out there! But no proof of Matthias' parentage - YET.
Keep looking, and stay in touch.

Has anyone ever heard from the person who had said he/she was setting up
the web page? I sure haven't. Does it exist?
However, I have found this, that might be useful to some.. There are
links to some other sites that may require a subscription.
