Since the two John L. Chitwoods were cousins, possibly the other John L. Chitwood's wife, Sarah J. Fulford, was the one who arranged for her relative's child to be adopted by her husband's childless cousin and his wife Saretha A. Young?

Thank you so VERY MUCH for clearing that up for me and especially for making it clear on this message board. There are enough assumptions posted that lead us on wild goose chases. Is this your line and do you have any further information on John Leander Chitwood? I'm wondering what the connection was that lead him to adopt Gertie.
Kind Regards,
Debra

He [Darwin] prophesied that future generations of paleontologists would fill
in these gaps by diligent search and then his major thesis - that
evolutionary change is gradual and progressive - would be vindicated. One
hundred and twenty years of paleontological research later, it has become
abundantly clear that the fossil record will not confirm this part of
Darwin's predictions. Nor is the problem a miserably poor record. The
fossil record simply shows that this prediction was wrong.
