Thank you for posting this information!
I've been curious about Samuel Alexander CHITWOOD and how many times he may have been married.
His first wife would appear to be Kate (Catherine or Katherine) SKINNER, who passed in February of 1880. I believe Samuel would have married again after her passing, and that it would be the next wife who would likely be the mother of Thomas Heard CHITWOOD and Isaac Elmore CHITWOOD.
Without the 1890 census, I have no information until he appears on the 1900 census in Fayette, Richmond Twp., Howard Co., MO, where he is allegedly married (for less than one year, and with zero children born to that union) to a woman named "Maria" born Dec 1852 in MO to parents both born in Virginia. "Hurd" CHITWOOD is also in the household at that time (age 13, b. Sept 1886 well after Kate SKINNER's death).
There is a marriage record of one M. E. MITCHELL marrying one S. A. CHITWOOD on 22 Nov, 1899 (Vol. 4, 118) in Howard Co., MO. Curiously, there is a death certificate online for a Marie E. CHITWOOD (nee: MITCHELL, born to Alex MITCHELL and Amelia FISHER, both of VA). This death certificate appears to be filled out by the husband, whose initials appear to be S. A. CHITWOOD. The death date was Feb 24, 1920, and occured in Columbia, MO. However, the husband does not know the wife's exact age and estimates it to be "81," much older than the woman identified in the 1900 census. Her passing in 1920 does, however, make the remarriage your post mentioned as occuring just before S. A. CHITWOOD's death in March of 1922.
I've seen several posts that suggest Samuel was married to a Mary Eleanor McKINNEY or THOMPSON. Perhaps she was the wife between Kate and Maria, and perhaps the mother of Thomas Heard and Isaac Elmore?
Again, thank you for your generous post and best wishes for your own research!
