Julie,
My name is David Kemp and I'm writing to you as I believe you have been
researching the surname Chitwood.
I am looking for a living descendant of Raymond J. Chitwood, born 11/27/1918,
died 11/17/1981, US Army MSgt., buried at Jefferson Barracks, MO. Perhaps there
is a widow, child, or grandchildren in the St Louis area. I'm just not sure
where to go from here. I'm pretty certain he was born and raised in St Louis.
I found a reference to a Raymond A. Chitwood who was recently a professor at
Baylor Univ. and with ties to St Louis. Unfortunately he is no longer working
in the Texas Dept. of Higher Ed.. The university is unwilling to disclose his
current whereabouts.
My reason for trying to locate a descendant of Mr. Chitwood is that my
Grandfather served with him in the 89th Infantry Division during WWII. I would
like to contact the family to share some wartime photographs.
Any assistance you might provide would be greatly appreciated. If I have
contacted you in error I apologize.
David Kemp
Portland, Oregon

Randolph Chitwood, 90, died in Stamford on August 29 of heart failure.
Born on June 14th 1915 in Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Chitwood was the only son of Ruth Elizabeth and Joseph Howard Chitwood. His father served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of the State of Virginia under President Woodrow Wilson and later as U.S. Attorney for Virginia under President Franklin Roosevelt.
Mr. Chitwood was educated at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the German Club. He left Virginia to pursue his life long ambition to study art at the Art Students' League in New York City. There he studied with Franklin Vincent DuMond, George Bridgeman, Bill McNulty and Mahonri Young. He also attended the Grand Central School of Art and studied at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts with Henry Henche. After World War II, he continued his studies at Columbia University.
It was while he was studying art on Cape Cod that America entered WW II. He volunteered for the Navy and experienced action in the Mediterranean and Pacific, where his aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV-7) was sunk by Japanese torpedoes. After being hospitalized for 6 months with severe burns, he returned to active duty on another aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown (CV-10.) He was discharged as a Lieutenant Commander and awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
In 1946 he married Betty Adams of Jackson, Mississippi at the "Little Church Around The Corner" in New York City. They had two daughters, Jenny and Betsy and, in 1952, moved to Old Greenwich, CT where he became a member of the Old Greenwich, Greenwich and Stamford Art Societies. He was a past president of the Greenwich Art Society. He was also a member of St. Saviour's Church of Old Greenwich, a former member of Rocky Point Club and the Salmagundi Club (in NYC.)
A graphic artist for 20 years, Mr. Chitwood also served as a freelance art director, illustrator, designer of books and direct mail advertising for publishers and advertising agencies. He designed and illustrated numerous books for Seabury Press and Teachers Publishing (Macmillan.) From 1968 through 1977 he was principal designer and producer for Better Homes and Gardens Book Clubs, Inc.
Along with local showings, Mr. Chitwood's award winning art has been exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Art, in Art USA 1958 in New York City, the East Tennessee School of Art, the Keane-Mason Gallery in New York, the Silvermine New England Spring Exhibition, and in member shows at the Salmagundi Club of New York.
Mr. Chitwood was also a gifted writer. Drawing from his early life, he wrote a number of short stories, many of which have been published in magazines and newspapers. In 1995, he began writing a memoir of his experiences in World War II under the title of Rendezvous in the Coral Sea, published by the Red Top Press, which has been widely acclaimed.
With the eye of an artist, he was a lover of nature and architecture, an entertaining story teller and a man of gentle and loving spirit. In addition to his wife Betty, Mr.Chitwood is survived by two daughters, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, September 7 at St. Saviour’s Church in Old Greenwich. Donations in Mr. Chitwood’s memory may be made to the Church at 350 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT 06870.
