I am the GGranddaughter of Savanna Chitwood Smith. Savanna was a direct decendent of Matthias. I am very much interested in obtaining directions to the Web Site and a copy of the book. I have a whole box of Chitwood pictures, most of which are not identified. Most are from Virginia, Tennessee & Oklahoma. Faith

I thought I had cornered the market on 1800's & 1900's Chitwood pictures. I have boxes of them. Unfortunately very few have names or dates. My GGrandmother Savanna Chitwood was decended from Matthias. Savanna married George W Smith, I am still sorting out dates. If you would like an information & picture exchange please contact me at bslvrnl(a)silcom.com
Not to disagree with Steve about the better known Chitwood book but it
depends on which of the Matthias Chitwood/Mary Key children you descend
as to which is the best known.
My line is from Richard Chitwood and it is fully documented in "The
Descendants of Matthias Chitwood" compiled by Ira O. Chitwood and
published in 1987. I cannot remember the line[s] followed in the Squire
Chitwood book, my apologies. It is available online at:
http://www.fulco.lib.in.us/genealogy/Tombaugh/Family%20Books/Html/chitwoo...
Melissa Banks, a Chitwood descendant, has a lot of the "Descendants.."
online at:

If anyone is interested in purchasing the hardcopy of IO Chitwood's
book--please contact me directly. I am NOT selling the book nor do I
receive anything for providing the information about it. The Chitwoods
who have copies of the book prefer that their names/addresses not be
published on the internet. They still had copies available as late as
mid-Spring 2005. The book is massive 650+ pp and, as I said, hard
cover. The advantage to the book is that Mr. Chitwood collected
pictures, book excerpts concerning famous Chitwoods, letters, etc.
If you write me and get a message from earthlink.net do not worry--I
have my SPAM filter set to high and any message sender not in my address
book currently is referred back to me. I check my mail daily.

The Family of Squire and Mary Chitwood is the best known book on the
Chitwood family.

Margaret Jeffries’ parents, Robert and Margaret Jeffries, came to Missouri from Shelby Co, KY in about 1811. Margaret was the youngest child in her family and was married at the age of 16, in St. Ferdinand Twp, St. Louis Co, Missouri Territory, in 1813, to James Chitwood. James was a son of Richard Chitwood and Mary Cantley, who settled in St. Louis Dist in 1798, several years prior to the Louisiana Purchase. Mary Chitwood (dau of James and Margaret) was probably born in St. Ferdinand Twp, St. Louis Co, Missouri Territory, even though her father and uncles acquired land in Ralls County in 1819.
Mary Chitwood was the first of her siblings to marry. She was also 16 years old when she married Hezekiah Lard in 1835 Ralls County, MO. John C. Chitwood (my GG grandfather) and his brother James Chitwood were among the first settlers in Ralls County in 1820. John C. remained in Ralls County, while his brother James Chitwood moved to Lawrence County, MO before 1850. James died there in 1863. In his will he referred to his daughter Mary Lard/Laird as, “Polly Large wife of Hezekiah Large.”
That is all I know about Mary, except that she was still living in Calhoun Co, IL in 1880. You might be able to find her date of death by writing to the County Clerk.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I dont know but yes the last name went to Laird (but have alos seen it Laard) and Sephronia became Safrona I know this because my Great Aunt Frona is named after her grand mother Safrona Britt, who married Levi Britt. The sad part is that Aunt Frona is the only living family member and her mind is sliping. I have gotten a lot of information from her.
What I would like to know is do you know any thinga about her past?
And how do you relate to her?

I have not yet been able to trace my Chitwood line any farther than my ggGrandfather William Chitwood. He is found in the 1860 Coffee Co. AL. census with his wife and four kids.
William Chitwood 25 1834 South Carolina
Louisa C. 24 1835 AL
Martin 6 1853 AL
Oliver 5 1854 AL
Mary J. 4 1855 AL
James 1 1858 AL
I have loads of info on Martin Alexander, Thomas Toliver, Mary Jane and their decedents up till the percent day. I have nothing on James. I hope to connect them all to Mathias. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have seen very little on the Chitwoods from South Alabama. Please fell free to contact me at eighthofnine(a)cox.net
Thanks,
Chris Lynch
