Not Oneida, but its westerly neighbor, Winfield. Winfield started out
as Chitwood, but then was renamed in honor of Gen Winfield Scott -
"Winfield" is in "Scott" County TN. Don't have time to look up the
story or the dates, as I am on my way out the door for the weekend, but
it's all online somewhere.
My family came from Winfield - g-grandparents were Rev Joel C and Mary
Jane TRAMMELL CHITWOOD. My grandparents, John X and Charity CHITWOOD
SCHRADER, met and married in Stearns, KY, (1903) then followed the
Stearns lumber interests from town to town until they moved back to
Stearns headquarters in Ludington, MI in 1920. Still have family in the
Winfield area.

I am looking for information on the family of Arthur Warren CHITWOOD (b. abt Apr 1875 or 1876 Booneville, Cooper Co., MO; d. 13 Feb 1935 Washington Park, St. Clair Co., IL). I believe Arthur's parents were Samuel Alexander CHITWOOD and Catherine SKINNER.
Arthur can be found in the household of Joseph W. SKINNER and his two unmarried aunts, Frances N. "Fanny" SKINNER and Mary SKINNER in 1880, when he is listed as "nephew" and age 3. Catherine is not in the household. Samuel A. CHITWOOD, according to the 1880 Census Fayette Twp., Howard Co, MO, p. 259, is working as a Dry Goods Clerk (S) age 29 b 1851 MO (MO-MO), e/w hotel. Again, no sign of Catherine.
Tracing the SKINNER line back, it would appear that George SKINNER, b. abt. 1800 MD came to Missouri with a bride named Rebecca (possible maiden name of COFFER), much younger than himself. They can be found on the 1850 Census of Cooper Co., MO. with son Joseph and daughter Fanny.
George must have died before 1857, when Rebecca remarries to a man much younger than herself: John RITCHIE. The 1860 Census shows Rebecca's SKINNER children: Joseph W., Frances N., Mary, and Catherine, as well as new daughter Madora "Dora" RITCHIE. I have not found Catherine on the 1870 census.
Meanwhile, in 1870, Samuel CHITWOOD, then 19, is living in the COCHRAN household.
Would like to find a true connection between Catherine SKINNER and Samuel CHITWOOD and Arthur Warren CHITWOOD.
Thanks for reading and best wishes in your own research!

Let's start again. Census records can be verified on Ancestry.com, but need to rethink relationship between Joie and Arthur. Missed a generation for Joie. Here goes:
1 Matthias (common ancestor)
2 James (or Richd) - brother - John
3 Shadrack (or Jas) - 1st cousin - John
4 Shadrack - 2nd cousin - William
5 Richard - 3rd cousin - Thomas J.
6 Rufus Allen - 4th cousin - George W.
7 Genl. Grant - 5th cousin - William A.
8 Arthur - 6th cousin - George Rice (Joie)
That means that Douglas C. is a 6th cousin once removed to Joie Chitwood. Sorry for the mixup... should have only posted census records.
Carolyn Chitwood Fairall [7PhilipG /6ChasR /5MiltonRJ /4JohnC /3Richard/ 2James /1Matthias]. As a child, can remember my father's negative reply to questions asked about relationship to Joie Chitwood. He did not know that he was a 5th cousin to Joie's father.

Hi Sheila,
While I have no charts showing an "Arthur", I am firmly convinced that all those in Oneida area were related. In fact,
I'd go further and say that all Chitwoods in the U.S. are related. I am sure I have a ton of "upline info" on your Arthur;
I just don't have enough "downline" data on his parents and or grandparents.

Joey? I have 8 "Joel"s in my charts, and 5 "Joseph"s... But I have no info regarding circus affiliations.

I'd like to know more. My grandfather Arthur Chitwood was called Mutt and was a coal miner who moved his family to New Mexico in the late twenties. His father lived in Oneida, TN until he died. My dad said he worked a coal mine call the "Little Blue Gem" I believe my grandparents were married in Whitely City right after World War I. I always wondered about any connections to Joey (?) Chitwood the famous auto circus guy and to other Native Americans. Any suggestions of where to look?
Thanks for your response.
