Subject: Re: John & Rhoda Chitwood, uncle & aunt of Joel Chitwood m1 Sally
Short m2 Elizabeth Rigney
Hello,
I don't know if this will help you or not. I do have a Frances (Franky)
Chitwood, born to William Chitwood, born about 1752 in either Chesterfield
or Cumberland Co (maybe) VA. He died February 28, 1822, in New London,
Franklin Co., VA. He was married to Susanna Nowlin in 1777. Now, I do have
a
listing of their children. However, Frances has nothing except her name and
born about 1790. Do you need her siblings, etc? Joel Chitwood, Sr is my
ancestor. He was a brother of your William Chitwood.
Let me know if I can help you. Wish I had more on your line.

Sorry, was just correcting an error in last posting. It is suggested in secondary sources that Frances Chitwood in 1850 census, is the same one who married Otey Hambrick, and the same one named in William's 1822 will. Have not seen in those sources the connection to the later marriage of Frances Hambrick, though, but it is possible.
The Sharp connection is a new theory, based on that Cochran pension application online. Still think the Lucy Sharp marriage in 1788 Franklin Co, VA, to John Ellison, and witnessed in 1788 by John Chitwood, is additional evidence that his wife Rhoda's maiden name was Sharp.

Below is the research of David R. Jones, Jr. http://www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/etc/Sink0416.txt
"Mary Elizabeth SINK was born 22 Mar 1842 in Virginia. She died 9 Aug 1919. Mary married Skelton Washington "Skelt" CHITWOOD, son of Naomi "Omy or Omey" CHITWOOD, on 30 Dec 1866 in Franklin Co., Virginia. Skelton was born 28 Oct 1835 in Franklin Co., Virginia. was buried in Bousman-Hodges, Cemetery, Franklin Co., Virginia. Skelt served with Company G, 37th Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States of America during the War of Northern Aggression. Skelton and Mary had fourteen children". And he goes in depth with each of the children on his website.
So we still don't know who the Frances Chitwood is found with Omey in the 1850 census or who Omey's husband (a Chitwood) was. Or do you?

Oh no... you're going too fast for me. I still hadn't finished investigating the possiblity of Rhoda's last name possibly being Sharp. But I do see where a Frances Chitwood was living with Omey Chitwood in 1850. The difference in their ages looks like they could be in-laws doesn't it? Wonder where the men were? So this Frances is probably not born a Chitwood...not the daughter of William Chitwood (d. 1822). Right?

Last sentence should read, "Possibly this is same Lewis Blankenship who married Frances Hambrick." IF this is the same person as Frances Chitwood who earlier married Otey Hambrick, then by 1850 she was again using her maiden name. Do you think Rhoda's maiden name was possibly SHARP? She was a cousin of Sarah Northcutt who married Samuel Cochran, according to the following @ ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/franklin/military/revwar/pensions/...:
---11 Sept. 1845 Franklin Co., Va. RHODA CHITWOOD declares she knows Samuel Cochran and Sarah Northcutt went to a preacher by the name of Simmons who married all the people that came to him. SARAH NORTHCUTT LIVED AT RHODA'S FATHER'S and Cochran came there and they went to the parson's with many persons and returned to her father's where the wedding was.
---1 April 1846. Sumner Co., Tenn. Barnett (X) Blankinship, aged 78, declares he was born 12 July 1768 and was acquainted with Samuel Cochran and Sarah Northcutt before and after their marriage. He lived one and a half or two miles from Cochran. Sarah Northcutt lived about three miles from him. He was not at the wedding but he believes his older brother and some of the family now deceased were. Samuel Cochran and Sarah Northcutt were married in Bedford County, Va. in 1784. He had returned from the war three or four years before he was married and Miss Northcutt was a frequent visitor at his father's house before her marriage. SHE AND ROSA [probably RHODA] CHITWOOD WERE COUSINS. They both moved to Tennessee in 1818 and Cochran settled in Sumner County and he in Smith County, now Macon. Cochran lived at the time of marriage near the bank of Blackwater River, and Miss Northcutt lived on the Henry side and the marriage might have been on that side of the river.
---25 Jan. 1848. Macon Co., Tenn. Barnet (X) Blankenship declares he was born 12 July 1768. In 1784, the date of the marriage of Samuel Cochran to Sarah Northcutt, he was about 16 years of age. He lived on the south side of Blackwater in Henry County and a mile from the river. Cochran lived on the Bedford County side of the river, making only about two miles between them.Cochran was older than he but they were much together before he served in the war and when he came back Cochran was frequently at his father's house. SARAH NORTHCUTT ABOUT ONE OR TWO YEARS BEFORE HER MARRIAGE CAME ON A VISIT FROM SOME OF THE LOWER COUNTIES IN VIRGINIA TO A RELATION OF HERS NAMED SHARP AND FINALLY LIVED THERE PREVIOUS TO HER MARRIAGE. Simons, the preacher who married them, was a Protestant or high churchman, as they were then called. Sharp lived on the Henry side of the river, not more than two miles from affiant's father. The young couple had to go over Blackwater to the Bedford side of the!
river to meet the preacher. After they were married they at no time lived more than three miles from him until they both moved to Tennessee in 1818. Cochran and his wife had a large family, most of them married before coming to Tennessee.
Frances Chitwood who married 1832 Otey Hambrick, was the daughter of William Chitwood (m. Susanna Nowlin), who in his 1822 will named 6 children: "Dycey McMollen, Joel Cheatwood, Squire Cheatwood, Mathias Cheatwood, Sally Perdue & daughter FRANKY CHEATWOOD." [Otey Hambrick was the executor of 1856 will of Joel Chitwood, son of John & Rhoda Chitwood.] It is hard to tell which Joel Chitwood (William or John's son?) witnessed the various Franklin Co, VA marriages around that time.
According to Rootsweb WorldConnect tree by Jeff Doss: Lewis Blankenship (m1-1832, m2-1856, Franklin Co, VA-wives not named), was son of Hezekiah Blankenship, b 1757 Franklin Co, VA & Rhoda Meador b 1770. Hezekiah was son of Isham Blankenship, b 1738 Chesterfield Co, VA & Sarah Wilkinson, also the parents of Barnet Blankenship, mentioned above. Possibly this is the same Lewis Blankenship who married Julia Ann Rigney, Elizabeth Chitwood's daughter.

Thank you so much for helping me out. I know it’s quite a distance from your side of our family, so I really appreciate your looking up these records for me. You stumped me though on the reference to Elizabeth Chitwood’s daughter, Julia Ann Rigney’s marriage to Field Traylor. I just knew I’d seen it somewhere before and now I’ve finally found it. I copied it from a reference book in the library, Marriage Bonds of Franklin County Virginia 1786-1858, Wingfield's Works, by Marshall Wingfield, transcribed from the original records, annotated and alphabetically arranged, Clearfield, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1973, 1991, and 1995. 929.3755.
I believe you’re right that Elizabeth Chitwood may have married a Rigney before marrying Joel Chitwood. I’ll try and locate an 1800 or 1810 census with Rigneys in it and see if they have two young daughters before Elizabeth Rigney married Joel Chitwood in 1815.
The 1840 Census with the two Joels in it, where my Joel is between 60 and 70, has the younger Joel living in the same household as one male 20/30, two males 30/40, 3 girls under 5, one 5/10, two females 20/30 and one female 80/90. It sounds like a combined household. But I’ll take your note about Rhoda Chitwood’s son Joel and work on him for awhile. In fact I didn’t even know there was a Joel there! The only children I have so far for John II and Rhoda are William Chitwood and Sally Chitwood. Do you have any idea what Rhoda’s maiden name was?
The name Hambrick caught my eye…I see (in the book I mentioned above) a Frances Chitwood marrying Otey Hambrick 6 Feb 1832 sur. Joel Chitwood. And then Frances Hambrick marrying Lewis Blankenship 6 Jan 1845, sur. Joel Chitwood. Do you know who this Frances might be? This Joel is probably the one you mentioned if he left his estate to an Abigail Hambrick.
Thanks again for taking the time to look for all of this!

I have this Joel married to Sally Short (1/6/1800), then later to Elizabeth Rigney (10/20/1815). That would have made Randolph
a likely candidate for Sally's son, if he was born in 1802 as per census documents. I also have an Amanda, born ca 1846 (1850
census).

Jean Tombaugh states in her book, "Census records show that during the years of 1810-1830, there were eight children in the family of Joel." She quotes a letter written by Joseph H. Chitwood, dated 10 Apr 1928, "My great-grandfather, Joel Chitwood, had five sons all of whom were living within my recollection. Four of them spelled their names Chitwood, including my grandfather Randolph Chitwood, and one spelled his name Cheatwood." She names only four of the eight children in her book:
Randolph (1800-1895 Franklin Co, VA), Edmund (of Carroll Co, VA), Squire & Matthias (of Roanoke Co, VA - according to 1964 letter from Dr. Oliver Perry Chitwood to Jean Tombaugh). The fifth son who spelled his name Cheatwood, was Madison. A daughter, Caroline Chitwood, b 1822, appears in 1850 census with Joel & Elizabeth. Secondary sources vary as to the names of Joel's other two daughters. Could they be his step-daughters instead? His second wife, Elizabeth Rigney, was possibly married a first time, as seen in the following record: "Julia Ann Rigney, dau of Elizabeth Chitwood, m 31 Jan 1835 Franklin Co, VA, Field Traylor."
The other Joel Chitwood in 1840 Franklin Co, VA, is probably the unmarried son of Rhoda, widow of John Chitwood (brother to your William, another son of John & Elizabeth Tillotson Chitwood). He died in 1850's leaving his estate to Abigail Hambrick & her 3 sons.

I'm looking for the remainder of Joel Chitwood's children. I'm descended from Joel Chitwood and Elizabeth Rigney's son, Maddison. I have found Joel in the 1820 Franklin County, VA census, page 140, with three sons under 10 years old, two sons between 16 to 26, and a daughter 10 to 16.
Then in the 1840 Franklin County, VA census, page 324, I have Joel Chitwood aged 60-70 living with three females all between 20-50. Both of these censuses were almost fully alphabetized and on the same page as Joel Chitwood Sr. (in 1840) is a younger Joel Chitwood. I have a lot of research gathered for a Joel Chitwood recently from research done at the College of William and Mary, and would like to know if my Joel Chitwood had a son named Joel or if he was just named 'Sr.' because there was another one living in the same area. Does anybody out there have any idea who this other Joel Chitwood is who is between 30 and 40 years old in 1840?
And going back to my original question, if anybody has studied my Joel Chitwood (son of William, son of John, son of Matthias Cheatwood) I'd love to ask who Joel's kids were. I can figure out who the mothers are by their ages, knowing that Joel married Elizabeth Rigney on 20 Oct 1815. Thanks,
JC

Christopher,
Hi, I just wanted to say hey cousin. In fact it looks like 6th cousins, once removed. Matthias Chitwood is my 7th great grandfather also. Richard is the 6th. From there I branch off from you to James, then Daniel, then his daughter Hannah. Hannah's (Ross) daughter was Manerva Ross (Stephens). Her daughter was Arminda Stephens (Sharp) and her son O.L. Sharp was my grandfather. They were all from Scott Co. TN. I am in GA.
I think it's really neat to run across cousins like this and wanted to say hello.

Amanda was Calebs daughter, so Carter would have been Amandas brother and Jess would have been Amandas nephew. Jess had George, your father, and is a cousin to Ty. As well, George is a second cousin to Ty, which makes you a third cousin of Ty Cobb....and the weird thing is I am an extended cousin, by blood to Ty.....so how you doing Cousin???

I know this has been awhile since I poated a message, but I got interested again and found some replies. In regards to Daniel....this is the same person. I traced my family to Ty Cobb and it turns out that I was wrong....Caleb is Pheebes, (or whatever the correct spelling is), cild, not brother. Caleb Chitwood, (born 1832), married Sicily Mize and their child was Amanda Chitwood, (born 1870)...Ty's mother.
She married William Hershel Cobb and they are buried in Royston, GA, (I have been to the cemetery and seen the nice masoleum). Amanda went nuts and Tys father was very disappointed Ty went to baseball professionally.
Matthias was my 7th Great Grandfather, Richard..6th,,..Daniel..5th.....William B....4th,.....James Monroe...3rd........,William Temple...2nd.....,Bee Hilley..great grandfather........,Charlie Chitwood was my grandfather...................,
back at Daniel when he married Elizabeth Richardson.....they had Pheebe...and extended gggggreat aunt....in which there is no record of marriage, but records of children....whom is Caleb...Caleb would be an extended cousin of mine....Caleb had Amanda...another extended cousin.....Amanda had ty....another extended cousin of mine...which is odd, because as a little girl my mother went to her AUNTs house in Royston and she told my mother to be quite because Uncle Ty was home and resting and did not like rowdy children...they must have been mistaken or just called him Uncle Ty for another sentimental reason.
Hopes this helps anyone...you can always email me and I can find answers for your questions.
