Have no answers about identity of Capt. Chetwood nor knowledge of the
Dempster name connected to Cheatwoods. The following are census records of
brothers Charles & Marion Cheatwood & their father Irvin, that may provide
other clues in your search. Perhaps there are records at the shipyard at
which Charles worked in 1920 Seattle? Thank you for new information about
marriage & death dates & for the full name of daughter Isabel (sounds
similar to name of Irvins wife in 1880 census).

My interest is with Charles and Marion Cheatwood, who may have been
business contacts and/or friends of my grandfather-in-law William Arnold
DEMPSTER. My mother-in-law made a note at some point in the past that
reads "Capt. Chetwood and Bill Dempster sold out coal business to a Capt.
Woodward - lost money as it was in Captain name - which later business
became Evans Coleman & Evans." This coal business was in Vancouver,
B.C., about 1889, and may have been operating as a brokerage firm
bringing coal by boat from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island to the docks in
Vancouver. The Capt. Chetwood may have been the boat partner based in
Nanaimo, and Bill Dempster the office partner in Vancouver. Dempster is
listed in the 1889-91 Vancouver directories but Chetwood is not.
A web search of Vancouver and Provincial archives returned the name
Cheatwood, but not Chetwood.
Subsequent research produced photocopies of the marriage registration of
Charles Henry Cheatwood and Sarah Ann Wilkinson; the birth registration
of their daughter Mirza Isabella Wilkinson Cheatwood and the death
registration of another child; and the death registration of Marion
Cheatwood. I will gladly send you copies of these records by post, or
transcripts by e-mail, whichever you wish.
My question to you is whether or not the name DEMPSTER has appeared in
your travels through your Cheatwood research. I don't know if one of the
brothers is the "Capt. Chetwood" referred to in my mother-in-law's note,
but there are several coincidences which give me hope. The name, of
course, and the fact that Charles was employed as a miner in Nanaimo,
B.C., when he got married in 1898. Nanaimo was the centre of the coal
mining industry in B.C. at that time, so there is a coal connection.
Charles and Bill Dempster were almost the same age; Charles being three
years older. When Marion died in 1926, his sister-in-law Mrs. C.
Cheatwood (wife of Charles, I assume) was the informant named on his
death registration. Her address was Seattle, Wash. Bill Dempster moved
to Seattle in 1900 and died there in 1942. Another coincidence.
Another question: do you have any indication that one of the brothers
could have been a captain?
I hope some of this is new to you, and that one of your Cheatwoods will
prove to be the Captain Chetwood I am searching for. I look forward to
your reply.
Cheers!
Eleanore Dempster

I have other letters and such that say we are from the Stephen line of the Elswicks. The letters also state that Owen Elswick (b. 1873, d. Mar 30, 1949) would be the older brother to John Henry Elswick. They also mention that if in fact the father of John Henry is Andrew, then his father would be either the son of William or Jonathon who in turn would be the son of Stephen.
I currently have death certificates for Curtis Colson and John Henry as well as the letters and charts for John Henry, William (1892) and Curtis Colson. If any of this sounds familiar to charts you have done or if you have information on any of my “missing links” please let me know! I can be reached at mtheve(a)fuse.net . Locations (births, deaths, marriages, etc.) for all of these are mostly Scott County, Tennessee and Gatliff, Whitley County, KY. I am looking for anything I can get information on. Thanks in advance! ~Michelle

The Oklahoma Chitwoods are alive and well at this writing. My maternal grandparents were Iva Hoover and Earl Chitwood of Tuttle, OK in Grady County. Iva and Earl moved to Osage County, OK around 1930 and raised their 8 children there.
