Hey Chitwood Kin--these book[s] may be old news to all of you but
thought I would post them to the list. Be aware that Library of
Congress is the "court of last resort" for lending but you at least have
a good citation to take into your local public library if you want to
request them on interlibrary loan. I have included all info but the
physical location of the book. If you are in the DC area and want to go
to LC they have their catalog online or if you are going and want to
prepare in advance check their online catalog and use the keyword
"Chitwood"--you get 118 entries so a lot is not genealogy-related.

Hi all
Here is a message that was posted on a list that I belong to from
Yorkshire, England. It gives a link that we could follow (I have before
and will again), and it would be interesting to see what things others
of you can find in our search for information on Matthias CHITWOOD.
Also, it supports a theory I had several years ago, regarding why
Matthias returned to England for several years.
Explore and enjoy!

> On the off chance that you are not familiar with the University of Virginia Library website, I am sending the URL. If you have your family back to the mid-1600's in the Tidewater area, then you may have already used this resource. The library holds a variety of records that may provide a clue to the origins of your [family]. Ship records in particular may point to his place of origin. While you may search on line, you will need to visit the library to access the actual records.

> Traditionally, the propertied young men of coastal Virginia were sent back to England for their education. Under "Research Notes Number 16
Biographical Research at the Library of Virginia The Seventeenth and
Eighteenth Centuries" the site suggests a resource that might help your
particular search: "For Virginians who were educated or trained abroad,
the printed alumni records of Dublin, Cambridge, and Oxford are valuable
for establishing birth dates and names and occupations of fathers."
> I strongly suggest that you read the book "Albion's Seed" David Hackett
Fischer, ISBN 0-19-503794-4, which is a must-read for anyone with
ancestors
who settled in the Colonial South. Of particular interest to you would
be
the chapters detailing origins of the elite English families of the
landed
Tidewater families, the Border origins of indentured servants and the
recruiting campaign of Sir William Berkeley during the time period your
[ancestor] bought land. The author cites studies which show: (page 219)
"...two thirds of these families had lived within a triangle of
territory in the south and west of England, stretching from the Weald of
Kent to Devon and north to Warwickshire."
> This may help refine the area in which you must cast your net to find your [family].
