Affadavit Filed 26 May 1865, J. D. Wilson Clerk.
My great grandfather married in Lawrence Co, AL in Oct of 1870. His
surety bond was signed by a W. P. Chitwood in the amount of $200.00. My
G grandfather's name was Abram/Abraham Willson/Wilson. He married Sarah
Jane Nesmith from Morgan Co, AL.
I'm under the impression that someone who signed a surety bond was
usually kin or a close friend. So I'm wondering if anyone can make a
connection between the Chitwood surname and the Willson/Wilson surname.
I'm desperaately trying to identify Abram's parents and siblings. Family
stories say that the Wilson family was probably from NC or SC before
migrating to unknown county of GA where Abram was born ca 1852.
I first found Abram on the 1870 Morgan County, AL census. He was listed
as 18 yrs old, white male farmer, born GA, living in the household of a
Mary Woodall. She was listed as 33 yrs old, born SC. No other male is
shown in the home. For whatever reason, a letter granting Abram
permission to marry was written and signed by an H. H. Crosby and S. E.
Crosby. It was addressed to the Probate Judge of Lawrence Co, AL. There
is no known connection between the Wilson family and a Crosby family so
I do not know why they had authority to grant legal permission. Oddly,
on that same 1870 census, there was a Sarah Crosby listed as living next
door to Abram. She was shown as 21 yrs old, born in GA and blind. The
only other person in her household was a Jas. W, male 9 month old
infant, born in AL. There is probably some connection between this Sarah
and the Crosby couple. I've wondered if perhaps Abram was adopted out or
indentured to this Crosby couple to learn a trade.
Any information connecting these people would be greatly appreciated.
Unless I get a break, I don't think I'll ever be able to identify
Abram's parents and siblings.
