Hi Julie:
Thanks for responding to my query about Charoline CHITWOOD.
I'm sorry but I don't know if Caroline was a first or middle name. It
is the name that I have discovered on several U.S. Census where she is
listed as the wife of Ephriam MORROW. On the 1900 Census for Alcorn
Co., MS, Caroline is listed with the family of her son Andrew Jackson
MORROW. On Andrews entry it indicates he was born in AL (Randolph Co.
according to my research); his father was born in GA (Habersham Co.
according to my research with "lots of guessing"); his mother born in
NC.
The entry for Caroline indicates she is 76 years old, born in July (this
calculates to a birth year of 1824, her husband was born in 1822 so that
sounds right), the census shows Caroline born in SC with both her mother
and father being born in NC. So I don't know if Caroline CHITWOOD was
born in SC or NC. I tend to believe SC since several of the Census
entries for different years indicate this state.
By the time the 1900 Census was taken, Caroline and Ephriam were living
in seperate households in Northeast MS. The "oral family tradition"
indicates that while serving in the Civil War, Ephriam made a "pact"
with an army buddy that if either of them were killed, the survivor
would care for the other's family. The story continues that Ephriam's
friend was killed and that he took the man's widow into his home. This
caused a lot of "heartache" and Caroline went to live with one of her
sons. The 1900 Census shows a Sarah RAGAN living in Tippah Co., MS in
the household of Ephriam MORROW. Sarah b. Feb 1821 with no children
born or living. She is shown as "hired". My research reveals that back
in Randolph Co., AL, Ephriam MORROW purchased land from the Federal
Government in 1860 and that the farm adjoining his to the south was
owned by a Thomas RAGAN. SO there might be some substance to this
family "oral tradition".
To add to my CHITWOOD/MORROW research problems, NONE of my MORROW
ancestors is in a marked grave. This includes my grandmother MORROW,
who was married to two brothers named BLAYLOCK, is buried in West Palm
Beach, FL (she was estranged from her children). My grandfather MORROW
who is in an unmarked grave on a farm in Rock Springs, Putnam Co., TN,
my great grandmother MORROW who is buried in a church cemetery in the
Salem Community just south and adjacent to Cookeville, TN, my great
grandfather MORROW who is buried south of Corinth, MS with his brother
Andrew Jackson MORROW and Andrews wife Tine MORROW MORROW (she was
Andrew's first cousin). I have never discovered the burial sites for
Ephriam MORROW and his wife Caroline CHITWOOD. They died in the early
1900's prior to the State of MS requiring death records. They are
"quite likely" in unmarked graves in the same burial ground where Andrew
and James MORROW are buried. At one time this yard was affiliated with
a church but the church burned in the 1970's and the cemetery is now
"overgrown" except for one portion which is maintained by the ROSS
family.
I hope I haven't bored you with all of this detail but if you know the
background of these people you will get a better "feel" for why I am
having such great difficulty in "tieing" them to their correct
ancestors. It is obvious to me that after the Civil War, most of my
southern ancestors had little or no assets, so there are no wills;
probated estates, inventories, deeds etc. plus the courthouse at
Randolph Co., AL burned in the late 1800's.
I would "very much" like to be included in your group of CHITWOOD
researchers. By the way, it is "very possible" Caroline's name was
CHEATWOOD. There are a lot of CHEATWOOD's in Benton/Calhoun Cos. in AL
just north of Randolph Co., in the 1850-80 time period when Caroline was
raising her family there.
My current CHITWOOD research is focusing on a Charles CHITWOOD b. 1800
in NC and his wife Frances. He apparently lived in Williamsburg Co., SC
in 1820/30; in Heard Co., GA in 1840 (Heard Co. GA borders Randolph Co.,
AL); in Tallapoosa Co., AL by 1850 and his family (but not he and his
wife) were in Autauga Co., AL by 1860. Someof his childrten were born
in GA during the 1830's and he was apparently in AL by 1842 when a child
was born there.
So this Charles CHITWOOD follows the "apparent migration pattern" of my
line of MORROWs which I believe is SC/GA/AL, then my branch only, great
grandfather James Lindsey MORROW going in middle TN about the time the
Civil War started, he would have only been 15 years old. I know there
were CHITWOODs in Smith Co., TN and "wonder" if they were kin?
I'm sorry to have "rambled on" so long. I believe I am "very close" to
"possibly" tieing my CHITWOOD/CHEATWOOD line to one of the lines listed
in I.O. Chitwood's book BUT just can't PROVE anything. I tried several
years ago researching this family on the internet but did not have any
success. There are so many more people now using this source that maybe
I will get "lucky" this time.
Looking through my "stack of stuff", I just noticed there was a Robert
M. CHITWOOD buying land in Randolph Co., AL in 1848. I believe this is
Robert Martin CHITWOOD, who used the name Martin and was killed during
the Civil War. Are you familiar with this line or just the KY/TN
CHITWOODs?
Hope to hear from you again.
