Has anyone else run across this? Any more information or why they think
John might be Matthias' father? This is a first for me - unless I'm
having a senior moment and just don't remember. Julie

Chitwood, Asbury-Son of Francis Marion and Emily Chitwood, born
August 28, 1878, departed this life June 8, 1946. He was baptized and
joined the Second Bethlehem Baptist Church July 1894 and on Jan. 15, 1942 he
became a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church by enrollment. United in
Holy Matrimony December 15, 1897 with Charity Chitwood, daughter of Richard
A. and Laura Chitwood. To this successful union eleven children were born,
four girls and seven boys. Asbury Chitwood leaves this faithful companion
and nine children to mourn his departure, also a number of grandchildren and
great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. We feel that our
loss is his eternal gain in glory.
Lowden, Lenora-Daughter of Daniel and Polly Blevins, was born
March 15th, 1883, age 65 years, 11 months and 6 days. She was united in
matrimony to Cornelus Lowden. To this union were born 2 sons and 6
daughters. She was a charger member of Pine Grove Baptist Church,
instituted February 25th, 1902 to which she remained a faithful member until
death. She leaves to mourn her passing a husband, 9 children, 24
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and a host of friends. We feel our
loss is her eternal gain.
Baker, W. H.-Son of Calvin and Nancy Baker, was born Jan. 22nd,
1877, deceased this life April 1st, 1949. Age 72 years, 2 months and 9
days. Was united in matrimony to Maggie Strunk May 17th, 1902. To this
union were born 3 sons and 1 daughter. He joined the Pine Grove Baptist
Church Dec. 17, 1916 and lived a faithful member until death. He leaves to
mourn his passing a loving companion, 1 daughter, 2 brothers, 5 sisters and
many friends and neighbors. We all feel our loss is his eternal gain.
Strunk, Noble-The son of Mr. and Mrs. Burdette Strunk was born April 2,
1912. Deceased this life July 14, 1949. He joined the Pine Grove Baptist
Church 1935, in which he was an active member for quite some time, leading
public prayers, singing in the choir, and helping in other activities of the
church. He was married to Birtie Marie Chitwood April 12, 1934. On
February 17th, 1943 he answered the call to serve in the U. S. Army and
served until July 31st, 1945. Noble leaves his wife, father and mother, 4
brothers, Clell and Junior of Winfield, Ralph of Toledo, Ohio, Fred of
Cincinnati, 3 sisters, Mrs. Doyle Crabtree and Gladys of Winfield and Mrs.
Willie Strunk of Oneida; a host of other relatives and friends. As we mourn
our loss we recall our Saviour's saying John 14. "I go to prepare a place
for you and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and
receive you unto myself."
Wilson, Imogene Anderson-Was born November 29, 1929, departed this life
February 5, 1949, 19 years, 2 months and 7 days old. She was the daughter
of Andrew and Vina Anderson of who preceded her in death several years ago.
She made her home with her Uncle Loyd and Blance Anderson of Silerville.
She was married to Mitchel Wilson March 11, 1946. To this union were born
two children, a son Andrew Wilson and a daughter Phyllis Ann Wilson who
preceded her in death the 16th day of December 1948. She joined the
Silerville Baptist Church several years ago. Imogene always wore a smile
for everyone. She bore her suffering patiently and always spoke a kind word
to everyone who came in to see her. She said she was ready to go and we
know when God called her home she was through suffering. She leaves to
mourn her absence a husband, one son, a grandmother, 4 uncles, 7 aunts and a
host of friends, but we feel our loss is heaven's gain.
Gooch, PFC Johnnie Edward-Was born November 15, 1919, to Matt and
Lou Gooch. His father preceded him in death, leaving Johnnie with a big
responsibility on his young shoulders. He helped his widowed mother and
little brother until his duty called him to serve his country in February
1942. He served with the 109th Infantry, Co. I. in the European theater of
the World War II, until he paid the supreme sacrifice Aug. 13, 1944. He
left a mother who followed him in death two years ago July 14, 1947. He
joined the Second Otter Creek Church Nov. 15, 1931 the day he was 12 years
old. Johnnie was a boy that was loved by everyone. He always enjoyed being
with his friends and loved ones. He tried to make those around him happy.
He was 25 years, 8 months and 29 days old when he gave his life that others
might live. He leaves one brother, Luther, 4 aunts, Mattie King, who cared
for him like a mother, Minnie King, Susie Cooper and Sallie Wilson, 4
uncles, Mack Gooch, Edward Gooch, Andy Strunk, and Burel Strunk. Many
cousins and friends who feel proud of Johnnie's service to his country and
to his God. We are sure Johnnie would have said, "Comrades, I did not die
in vain." He was wounded 5 years ago today. We, his loved ones, feel
assured that Johnnie's soul took its flight on August 13, 1944 to be with
Jesus and his departed loved ones. We are sure he would say to those left
to mourn do not weep I am at peace.

Hello,
I have started to trace the Chitwood line and have found that there
is quite a bit of info available. I had found more information on this
line in twenty minutes than I have found on other lines over several
years. Anyway, I am trying to see if anyone else is tracing down the
Bernon Chitwood line. There are 4 of them starting in the early 1900's.
My brother-in-law is the 4th Bernon. Are you a descendant of a Bernon or
do you have any pertinent information to share? I would greatly
appreciate your help. Thanks, Tina

Thank you for forwarding the interesting information this morning.
Ambrose
Mills is another name mentioned in the 1782 NC court record you
forwarded
from Judy. He was one of the 9 hanged at the same time as Capt. James
Chitwood. The following is from THE LOYALISTS AT KINGS MOUNTAIN, by
Bobby
G. Moss, 1998:
p. 57 - "Ambrose Mills was born in England about 1722 and was brought
while
young to Maryland. He married Mourning Stone and settled on James River
in
Virginia. Later, he moved to the South Carolina frontier, where his
wife
and children were killed by Indians during the Indan Wars (1755-1761).
Thereafter, he married Anne Brown, sister of Col. Thomas Fletchall.
About
1765, he settled on Green River. In 1776, he served against the
Indians.
During 1778, he and Col. D. Fanning raised a corps of 500 men and
attempted
to withdraw to Florida. Mills and sixteen others were captured and
taken to
Salisbury, North Carolina. After being set free in the course of time,
he
joined Ferguson in Brannon's Settlement as colonel over a unit of
loyalists
from his home area. He fought at Earle's Ford and at Kings Mountain.
Mills
was captured at Kings Mountain, was tried, and executed at
Bigger-staff's."
p. 16 - "James Chitwood, of Ninety Six District (or Rutherford County,
North
Carolina), served as a captain under Ferguson and was captured in the
battle
of Kings Mountain. He was executed at Biggerstaff's."
p. 6 - "Aaron Bickerstaff (Biggerstaff) was of English descent and
resided
in present day Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was one of the
loyalist leaders at Ramsour's Mill and was a captain under Ferguson.
Bickerstaff was mortally wounded at Kings Mountain. He was taken to
Union
Court House, where he died. It was at his plantation where some of the
prisoners taken in the battle were hanged. His wife, Martha, with the
help
of an old farmer cut them down and buried them."
This book has well documented sources, including not only the Draper
Manuscripts, but also Loyalist Transcripts from the British Public
Record
Office, Kew, Surry, England.

Julie--thanks so much for keeping me on the list and forwarding new
Chitwood info. I am sending a copy of a document I downloaded from the
Reavis-L list at rootsweb.com . It has somewhat limited interest except
to descendants of CPT James and his brother Richard Chitwood. I am
assuming that this is the reason some of the Chitwoods left Tryon [now
Rutherford] County, NC. The irony of it all is that James [son of
Richard, 6th child of Matthias--wish they had been more creative about
names!!] was a veteran and drew a pension [copy available from NARA].
His petition was sent from Campbell County, TN the place where he
relocated after his land was seized.
Other names of interest in the document: Whiteside[s] and Biggerstaff.
We live close to Spruce Pine NC, just off Hwy 226 [which evolved from a
trail through the Blue Ridge Mountains--it was this trail that the "Over
the Mountain Men" [they were troops of Ferguson] travelled down from TN
to join Ferguson in the Battle of King's Mountain which preceded the
hanging of CPT James and the others. Every year there is a re-enactment
of their trek at the NC Mineral Museum [right at the head of the gap
down which they travelled]; it is occurring 28-29 Sept.
Feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested.

Julie,
Yes, I don't mind your posting my message to the list. Didn't know if
that many were interested in this line, or not.
I have had email from Carolyn before but, not lately. She has some good
stuff. I've always thought there were some missing things in Ira's data
about our line but, just didn't have time or resources to track it down.
Now, maybe I can.
Thanks, Sue
