I am looking for information on William Francis Chitty who was born about May 4 1853 in New Shoreham Rhode Island to William Chitty and Elizabeth Wilkey. Elizabeth Wilkey was previously married to William Simmons of Tiverton.
William F. had 2 half brothers Edward and Jeptha Simmons, 2 half sisters Josephine and Elizabeth Simmons and 2 full sisters Phebe and Jane Chitty..
I know that the family spent some time in New Shoreham on block Island and also Tiverton and Portsmouth.
I believe William F. spent some time at the Providence Reform School in 1869.
At some point for unknown reasons I believe he changed his name to William F. Simmons. I have him in Jersey City, NJ by 1878 as William Simmons.
I am looking for proof of the name change or any information on the Chitty family. My reasons for thinking that there was a name change comes form William Simmons obituary and death cert. that states him to have been born in New Shoreham May 4, 1853. Also his middle name is Francis and he named his son Jeptha. All of our family records indicate we come from RI.
I've checked with many historical societies and town records and find nothing, Probate records show no name change.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you!
Scott Simmons
