VIOLA K. CHITTY SMITH
RECEIVE STORY OF LIFE OF FORMER SPEARFISH WOMAN
The following story of the life of Mrs. Viola K. Smith, 80, former Spearfish resident who died March 6, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Etta Patterson, in San Diego, California, was received here this week from Mrs. John Chitty of
Folsom, South Dakota, Mrs. Smith's sister-in-law.
Obituary
Viola K. Chitty was born in Knox County, Illinois, June 16, 1858. She died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Etta Patterson, in San Diego, California, March 6, 1938.
Miss Chitty came to the Black Hills in June 1884 and settled at Rapid City. Two years later, August 4, 1886, she married G. L. Smith at Rapid City. The Smiths moved to Minnesela soon after they were married and Mr. Smith managed a drug
store there for several years. Later the family moved to Spearfish where Mr. Smith continued in the druggist business.
Following Mr. Smith's death in 1923 Mrs. Smith went to San Diego because of her health. She made her home with Mrs. Patterson since October of last year because of her failing health.
Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Orrilla Smith Ticknor of Menden, Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Stickney of San Diego, Mrs. Letha Phelps of Spokane, Washington, and Mrs. Laura F. Miller of Steel, North Dakota; and one brother,
John Chitty of Folsom, South Dakota.
Mrs. Smith was a past matron of Queen City Chapter No. 89, OES, and past noble grand of Aurora Rebekah Lodge No. 4 of Spearfish.
Taken from the "Queen City Mail," dated Thursday, March 24, 1938.
