Hi Marlon,
Here is what I know, or think I know.
Charles Chitty was born in S.C. I have looked all over there and cant find him. Lots of Chittys in the Barnwell area. Even a Chitty cemetary there. Maybe you can have better luck, Note that that three-county area has changed around some since he left. You can search earlier threads for more info and the genweb for S.C.
Tilden and Minnie Spears were with Charles Chitty in the 1880 census. However it appears Louis Spears picked up Minnie and moved to the next county north (Clark) You can find them in the 1890 Clark county Childrens immuneration (sp). It appears she married a fellow you will find about three families up from in the census. You will recognize the name when you check the 1910? Jefferson Davis, MS census. There you will find Turner and Sarah and Minnie with the same last name as you will find in the earlier Clark County children's census. I didnt write it down, I just happened to notice it as I was researching. I dont know now what happened to Minnie's husband, if he was dead or gone at the time of the Jeff Davis census. No children were listed. I would imagine she remarried and had kids under another name. I don't know who Til married. Think he may have been in Louisiania for a while but not sure why. He died in California in the '30s.
He is what I think I know about the Roberts folks. I think William and Susan Roberts (Married in Sumter County,AL) were in Scott County,MS in 1870, had a 7 year-old son named Turner. In 1880 the 17 year old is in the Chitty household as a nephew.
Now here is the assumed connection: Willian and Mary J.E, Roberts Chitty are brother/sister. If you check the 1850 census of Sumter County,AL you will find William and Mary of the right age living with a Simmons family. I dont know why they are there. I hope you can have better luck looking. Might find some kind of "Power of Attorney" papers or other court documents for the kids. Roberts and Simmons is a very common name in that neck of the woods.
Turner died in about 1929 in Red River County,TX. Sarah died back in Lauderdale County at the home of her daughter Mrs R.L. Potts in 1939. For what its worth I talked to some one who remember seeing Sarah when Sarah was old and she was a child. Remember her as a tiny indian woman with long braided hair living in a small cabin the Potts place. Long time ago and memories fade.
The usual disclaimers. If you discover more let me know.
Bill

Hello Bill,
I have research only some on this line, but I have heard from a cousin that the "Chitty Homestead" is still standing in Alabama. I'm not even sure which Chitty family it belonged to. Anyway just wanted to touch base with you and share what I have. I'm wanting to make sure my research is right and if I'm lacking any vital info. (which I know I do)
Charles M Chitty B-1824 South Carolina, death-unknown
Mary J.E. Roberts B-1832 Alabama, death unknown
married Sept 29, 1852 in Lauderdale County, MS
Children: Sarah A Chitty B-1854, Married Turner Roberts
Susan Chitty
Margaret E. Chitty b-1855, married Louis Spears, had two kids William Tilden & Minnie
Tabitha J. Chitty, married Frank Ware on 4/7/1891 in Lauderdale County
Willie Chitty (female), William Murphy 8/4/1891 in Lauderdale County
Charlie Chitty
William Tilden Spears/Roberts was my Great Grandfather. What has happened to his sister, Minnie? I know I seen her in the census latter, but nothing else.
Who was the father & mother of Charles M. Chitty? Who was the father & mother of Mary J.E. Roberts? (Was it William & Susan)? Exactly how was Turner Roberts related to her?
my line--
Charles Chitty
Margaret Chitty/Spears
William Tilden Spears/Roberts (Raised by Turner Roberts & claimed them as parents)
Minnie Roberts/Cupples
Nila Virginia Cupples/Ebey
ME
Both Bag0bones and Bill contacted at the same time, so I thought I'd reply to both of ya'll the same.
Thanks to both of ya'll!!!
Marlon

This info may be helpful; however, Bobby Chitty "bobbychitty1" whose tree is now on Ancestry.com is the master historian on the Texas Chitty's. Jessie Lee "Jess" Chitty 1893 - 1961, younger brother of William Nathaniel Buckner "Willie" "Buck" Chitty is/was my grandfather.
We had been told the Indian connection stories as well as descendants of George Price Chitty and India Rosella Thurman; however, children of siblings had not been told these stories. Other than the possibility of this generation's great, great, great grandfather John Chitty in Barnwell, South Carolina having married Frances possibly of Indian descent; I do not know for certain what the Indian connection might have been. South Carolina historians do state that Frances, as well as their children were buried separate and apart from John Chitty which would be a result of them not being of a pure Caucasian bloodline.
India Rosella Thurman from all accounts was not Indian; however, when her father, James K Price Thurman 1844 - 1880 died; her mother, Martha J Trice Thurman 1850 - 1920 remarried John Redfern Tucker 1826 - 1920 who was of Indian descent. India was later incorrectly listed on census as being his daughter; therefore, of Indian descent. India was sixteen when her mother married John Redfern Tucker.
Best of luck in your research,
Leah Chitty Walton
Daughter of Jessie Leonard Chitty 1921 - 1999

He would have been my great great grand dad. I am wondering if there is anyone out there with any information about him? I have heard of possible stories of Native American heritage. Anything would be helpful! Thanks!
