Irene Breen (nee Chitty) and Leonard Percial Breen were my grandparents. My great grandfather Charles Chitty was born about 1860 and was married to Ann Martin and they lived in Madras. It is possible that they married in England and went to India. Equally likely that they were born in India of British parents. My psychic head isn't working at the moment so I don't know which way it goes :-)
Unfortunately this is all I know about that branch of the family. If anyone out there thinks they could shed some light on this for me, it would really be appreciated. It's a heck of a way to go to look through records as I'm in the UK.

Hello Tarney, I think given all the pieces of evidences with the recurring names in both Southampton and Barnwell that it is pretty certain that the John Chittys mentioned in both places are the same man. I still have no idea if he is the same John Chitty that shows up in Nash County, NC for a bit.
I do not recall Elizabeth being listed in the Southampton Court Order Book. I did not note her as being part of the END of the case (the order book is only concerned with casses that are ending). I found nothing on who was involved at the beginning of the case. And then, I may have missed Elizabeth being named, or the clerk may have missed in recording the case.
Thanks for the information.
Joe

It appears that Elizabeth, minor daughter of Edward Chitty was, at least at some point, involved in the suit against John Chitty in 1761, per this information from Library of Virginia:

Edward in Barnwell-brother or son of John Chitty....
In John's 1805 Barnwell will, he specifically calls Edward his son:
"I also give bequeth to my beloved son Edward Chitte twenty five dollars to be Rais'd & paid to him at the Expiration of fourteen months from the present date out of my Estate & paid as afors'd...
John's widow, Frances Chitty, wrote a gift deed in 1825 giving the remainder of her property to her living children (and some of her grandchildren) in which she refers to Edward as one of her children. This deed was witnessed by Robert Delk, which is interesting as Delk is another Southampton area surname.
It is believed by many, that the Edward Chitty in the 1850 Dale County, AL census (age 71, born in VA) was the son of John of Barnwell. This Edward would have been born about 1779.
In 1812, an Edward Chitty may have traveled some distance with my ancestor, Peter Sandifer. He was granted a Georgia Passport which reads, in part:
"That passports be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Indian Nations to the Western Country, viz...One for Mr. Peter Sandifer with his wife and four children, and One for Mr. Edward Chitty, both from Barnwell District South Carolina."
My Peter Sandifer went on to Louisiana. Edward evidently went back to Barnwell. The 1820 Barnwell census has:
Edward Chitty, p. 6b 5M -10, 1M 26-44, 1M 45 ; 1F 26-44
I guess the male, 45 could be Edward, b. 1752, son of Edward. This is the first census where any Edward Chitty shows up in Barnwell census records (as far as I have been able to determine).
--------------
Are SC John and VA John the same person...
In going through my paper files, I found an 1801 Barnwell deed (Book 2, p.277) I failed to transcribe before, so sort of lost track of it. In this deed, John Chitty "for the love and good will and affection I have to my Son in Law Samuel Matthews..." one hundred acres. Signed, John Chitty Sen. Witnesses: William Chitty, John Sandifer and Robert Chitty. From John's will, we know he had a daughter Wineford Mathis (as spelled in the will). From Southampton marriage records, we know Samuel Matthews married Winifred Chitty, Sept. 1, 1782. I think this all adds a lot of strength to the John of Barnwell being the same John of Southampton.
Hope this helps to unravel some Chitty puzzles.
Tarney Smith
