Irene Chitty Yates, 79, of the 700 block of Madison St., died Dec. 2, 2002. Born in Emporia, Va. Apr. 17, 1923, she was a retired beautician and a member of The Tabernacle Church in Chesapeake.
She is survived by her husband, Herman T. Yates of Portsmouth; a sister, Nellie B. Moseley; sister-in-law, Maxine T. Chitty, both of Miami, Fla.; daughters, Patricia S. Dixon of Portsmouth and Sharon S. Justice of Chesapeake; a son, Johnnie P. Saunders Jr. of Suffolk; a granddaughter, Melissa J. Gelardos; grandson, Jarrad L. Saunders; three great-grandchildren; five nephews; and one niece. She was predeceased by a grandson, Joshua G. Justice.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Emporia Cemetery on Brunswick Avenue, Emporia. A reception for family and friends will follow from 4 to 6 p.m. in Suffolk at the home of Johnnie Saunders Jr., 3729 Indian Trail.

James Frank Chitty Jr., 76, died Dec. 30, 2000, in his home.
Born in Menola, N.C., on Dec. 16, 1924, and a native of Ahoskie, he was the son of the late James Frank Chitty Sr. and Hettie Blowe Chitty, both of Menola. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Chitty retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years. He was also a retired partner in Southern Breeze Realty of Ahoskie. He was a former member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, and was a member of Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie Wade Chitty of Kitty Hawk; a son and daughter-in-law, James Frank ''Jim'' Chitty III and Kay Chitty of Shelby; a daughter and her fiance, Deborah Chitty McKinney of Kitty Hawk and Jimmy Godwin of Kill Devil Hills; a mother-in-law, Goldie F. Wade of Conway, N.C.; four grandchildren, Haley Young Chitty of Shelby, James Frank ''Jay'' Chitty IV of Shelby, Taylor Wade Chitty of Shelby, and Franklin Stuart McKinney of Kitty Hawk; and two sisters, Mabel Chitty Edwards of Ahoskie and Thelma Chitty Vinson of Murfreesboro. He was the brother of the late John Thurman Chitty formerly of Ahoskie and Dorothy Chitty Britt formerly of Murfreesboro, N.C.
A funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Garrett Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Bradshaw and Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 320 W. Main St., Ahoskie, NC 27910 or Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church, 803 W. Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday prior to the service.

MURFREESBORO - Catherine Phillips Chitty, 74, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Mrs. Chitty was born in Sussex County, Delmar, Delaware, a daughter of the late Medford L. and Helen K. Phillips. She later moved to Murfreesboro where she met and married the late Jerry N. Chitty. Catherine was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church, the Murfreesboro Lioness Club, and worked with Little People's Day Care.
Survivors include four daughters, Beverly Umphlett, Deborah Parker and husband, Larry, Teresa Parker and husband, Keith, all of Murfreesboro, Valeria Harrell and husband, Wayne, of Washington, NC; eight grandchildren, Shannon Umphlett, Gabriel Parker, Joshua Parker, Melissa Parker, Stephanie Parker, Catherine Parker, Tyler Harrell and Alexis Harrell; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Cottee, Noah Parker, and Ethan Parker; and "Little Girl;" three sisters, Diane Dixon of Murfreesboro, Madelyn Hodges of Atlanta, GA, and Jane Trader of Reno, Nevada.
A funeral will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Meherrin Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Sellers, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2004. Memorial donations may be made to the Elevator Fund at Meherrin Baptist Church or to the Hertford County Relay for Life.

William E. Chitty, 82, died Oct. 15, 1996, in a Newport News hospital.
A native of Norfolk, Mr. Chitty was president of Roof Engineering Corporation. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and co-founder of the Eastern Brewbaker Academy. He was a member of the Builders and Contractors Exchange, the Virginia Association of Roofing Contractors and the National Roofing Contractors Association. He was actively affiliated with the Boys Club, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America, Optimist International Club, Norfolk and Virginia Beach Executives Club and numerous other organizations.
Survivors include his wife, Cathryn Hudgins Chitty; daughters, Lucie Ann Helwig and her husband, Howard, of Virginia Beach and Cathryn E. Chitty of Virginia Beach; sons, William E. Chitty II and his wife, Vicki, of Virginia Beach and Ronnie D. Chitty and his wife, Joyce, of Spring Grove, Va.; sisters, Garnet Lucille Smith of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Doris Bernice Vonderheide of Baltimore; six grandchildren, Scott Andrew Helwig, Ryan William Helwig, Juli Anna Chitty, Bonni Rae Chitty, James W. Wise and Jennifer Lee Wise; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. J. Ewing Brown. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today. There will be a reception at the church following the service. Mr. Chitty was born in Murfreesboro, N.C., where he was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church. He was the owner and operator of the Community Care Home in Aiken and was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Futrell Chitty; one daughter, Teresa Ann Warren of Hertford, N.C.; three sons, Richard Daniel Chitty and Bruce Kevin Chitty, both of Murfreesboro, and Joel Keith Chitty of Augusta, Ga.; his mother, Virgie Northcott Chitty of Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, N.C.; two sisters, Louise Howard of Murfreesboro and Margaret Brinkley of Ahoskie; two brothers, Ronald Chitty of Monetta, S.C., and Billy Chitty of Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Billy Sellers and the Rev. Anthony Futrell. The family will be at Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. The family will assemble in the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Friday.
