Hi Debbie:
I was stunned by your response. To substantiate we are talking about the same Family Tree I had previously recorded that Robert’s wife was Esther Madill. Thanks for your information. I have ordered the disk containing Vol. 55 from WFT.
Your information adds new dimensions to my search. John, George’s son was born in 1823 and died in Blanshard Twp, Perth County, Ontario October 15, 1903. I verified this from his tombstone. The first concrete record I have of him is from an 1851 Census where he is shown as being age 30, a member of the Church of England (i.e. Anglican) and born in Ireland. His brother Christopher does not appear until the 1861 census, age 26, C.E. and born in Ireland.
In the 1851 Census, Mary age 55, appears as residing with John, as a widow in the 1955 Twp Assessment and by herself in the 1861 Census, age 78, which doesn’t fit with the former reports. I now presume this Mary was Mary Eligan, John’s and Robert’s mother.
I have no documentation to support any of the known Chittick’s immigration into Canada. Myth told by my Aunts and Uncles, now all deceased, describes four brothers who emigrated from Ireland at the same time and something about shooting sharks from the boat. One settled in Nova Scotia, one in the U.S. (Robert presumably) and two in Ontario. From this I presumed that Robert was born in Ireland and that George died there. You indicate that Robert was born in Canada; do you know where? Is it possible that George, Mary and children emigrated together to Nova Scotia or Quebec (where there were Chittick families) and that George died there sometime after Robert’s birth and before John and Christopher came to Blanshard. Numerous interesting possibilities.
How can we communicate directly. I would like to exchange information. Would you call me (905) 893-1849. I’m home most evenings except Wednesdays.
Roy
Given the recent postings on the Chitticks Board, I thought I would repost
mine. I'm not sure of a connection with any of the others posted, however,
there only seems to be a few Chitticks families in the Glasgow area at the
time so I'm sure meet somewhere. Indeed there were only 3 distinct families
listed in the 1891 census for Scotland!
I think that Crawford Chitticks (below) came over from Ireland with a family
member - William - but I don't know the relationship. There seems to have
been quite a lot of Chitticks in Fermanagh and I have also been sent a list
of some who settled in Australia. I too am curious as to where in England
they came from originally.
My Chittick connection was my ggg grandfather Crawford Chitticks. From
information in the Poor Law records, he was born about 1819/1820 in
Co.Fermanagh and came over to Scotland in the mid 1830s at the latest. He
married in March 1837 in Paisley to Mary Mackie (b.c.1818). They had 6 or 7
known children, the eldest 2 born in Paisley, the rest in Glasgow. The
children were:
Jane b.1838/39 - dies 1872 (no surviving children)
Crawford b.1841 - dies 1861 (no children)
Sarah b.1844 - dies 1881 (5 known children inc.my g grandmother)
Mary Ann b.1847 - dies 1889 (2 children, 1 of whom is known to have died)
Isabella b.1851 - marries John McPhail and have 5 known children
Gavin/George b.1854 - not sure if this is one or the same person. George
is known to be born that year but no further reference. However Gavin's
birth is unknown but he does marry and have at least 1 child.
Sarah Chitticks (my gg grandmother) had 5 children with James Murray. I
don't think they were ever married and he was in and out of prison a lot! I
don't know what happened to James born 1864, Thomas 1868 or Frederick 1878
after they grew up but suspect Fred went to sea. Gavin Murray was born 1874
and left for America as a teenager. He married and had family there (still
there today) and lived to the age of 99.
Jane Nelson Murray (my great granny) was born 1870 and died in 1952. She
married Thomas Wilson in 1888 and had 8 children including my Grandma
(1897-1994).
I would be keen to hear from any other Chitticks researchers that might be
able to help.

Roy,
I believe we do have a connection here. The Robert Chittick you talk about is my great-great grandfather. Robert was born in Canada on Jan. 12, 1838 and died in Missouri on October 25, 1909. He is buried in the Burnside Cemetery in Avalon, Missouri. Robert's wife name was Esther. They had 6 children together. They are:
Robert H. Chittick b. abt. 1860
Elizabeth J. Chittick b. 1861 m. Ward Bishop
William Chittick b. April 1, 1867
Mary Chittick b. 1868 m. Richard Whiteside
Lina W. Chittick b. Feb. 14, 1875 m. James A. Patterson
Smith Chittick b. 1876
I found my great-grandmother Lina W. Chittick in one of the trees in Family Tree Maker. It is on Vol. 55 tree 238. The tree shows her grandparents are George Chittick and Mary Eligan whom you say are your gg-grandparents. It also shows Roberts wife name was Esther Madill.
Betty. Although my ancestors emigrated from Northern Ireland I have a tree full of Johns, Elizanbeths, Marys, Henrys and Georges. It makes me wonder if they emigrated to Ireland from Scotland? If your cousin turns up anything like this i would love to know about it.
Debbie and Angela. I too have a George and Robert in my family tree. George is my Great Great Grandfather. Robert, whom my records indicate went to the U.S. and died in Missouri (?) was one of seven sons (there were two daughters) who emigrated to North America along with their mother Mary Eligan. Mary lived with my Great Grandfather John until he married. The other sons of George and Mary were George, William Henry, Archibald and Christopher. The girls were Marhgaret and Ann. How does this fit with what you have?
Jennifer. My father was also Henry Chittick (William John Henry) but my heritage is Ireland (Balamena). TMy research indicates that Chitticks went over to Ireland to fight and that fits what I know about the Chitticks. I thought the origin of the name came from the Olde English spelling of the word Architect (Archetich).
I read with interest your message. While I do not have information on David Chittick, my family names seem to parallel yours in the Port Glasgow area. My great-grandfather, Christopher Chittick was born in Port Glasgow, his son (my grandfather)Gavin (no middle name) was born in Paisley. Our connection, if any, probably occurs a generation or two prior to David Chittick. I had an Aunt Margaret and an Uncle John - there are a lot of matching names in our family trees amd as you know, in Scottish families the names carry through the generations - My immediate family is filled with Gavins! Feel free to contact me if you would like addition information on my family. My cousin, in Scotland, has been doing some minor research on our family and I am sure, with my urging she would delve into this further.
