Hi Cyn
Somehow we will be distantly related - I'm sure of it as there were so
few Chitticks around in those days (still are!). My name Chittick also
includes entries written as Chittock. I am lucky to have a lot of information
on the family as they were in and out of the poor law records which were
very detailed. I will send a separate e-mail listing the other Chitticks
that I have notes on. I think that Crawford came over from Ireland with
a family member - William - but I don't know the relationship. I wonder
if that is the connection for us? There seems to have been quite a lot
of Chitticks in Fermanagh and I have also been sent a list of some who
settled in Australia.
My Chittick connection was my ggg grandfather Crawford Chitticks. From
information in the Poor Law records, he was born about 1819/1820 in Co.Fermanagh
and came over to Scotland in the mid 1830s at the latest. He married in
March 1837 in Paisley to Mary Mackie (b.c.1818). They had 6 or 7 known
children, the eldest 2 born in Paisley, the rest in Glasgow. The children
were:
Jane b.1838/39 - dies 1872 (no surviving children)
Crawford b.1841 - dies 1861 (no children)
Sarah b.1844 - dies 1881 (5 known children inc.my g grandmother)
Mary Ann b.1847 - dies 1889 (2 children, 1 of whom is known to have died)
Isabella b.1851 - marries John McPhail and have 5 known children
Gavin/George b.1854 - not sure if this is one or the same person. George
is known to be born that year but no further reference. However Gavin's
birth is unknown but he does marry and have at least 1 child.
Sarah Chitticks (my gg grandmother) had 5 children with James Murray. I
don't think they were ever married and he was in and out of prison a lot!
I don't know what happened to James born 1864, Thomas 1868 or Frederick
1878 after they grew up but suspect Fred went to sea. Gavin was born 1874
and left for America as a teenager. He married and had family there (still
there today) and lived to the age of 99.
Jane Nelson Murray (my great granny) was born 1870 and died in 1952. She
married Thomas Wilson in 1888 and had 8 children including my Grandma (1897-1994).
Keep in touch...

Hi Jennifer,
Henry's parents are John Chittick and Margaret Marshall Bankier. The only
census years for Cadder that I've checked are 1871, 1881,and 1891. They're
on there, however the 1881 census has the surname spelled 'Chittock'. For
all 3 of the census years, John Chittick's birthplace is simply 'Ireland'.
On the 1871 census, there is a William Chittick living 3 houses away from
John and Margaret. There is a relation between John and William but haven't
established it clearly yet.
Do any of the Chitticks on the Poor Relief have a more specific birthplace
than 'Ireland'?
Henry Johnstone Chittick and Margaret Marshall are my great grandparents.
How are you related to the Chitticks that you mentioned? Maybe we are related?
:)
