William is well documented in the book Genealogy of the Chittenden family, but is he the only progenitor of pre-1800 Chittenden's in America? I looked for our Polly and Sally Chittenden (NOT the daughters of Solomon and Sally, please correct that in your files-Solomon's daughter Polly remained in NY and did not marry Azariah Ross!) in the Genealogy of the Chittenden family, but the one likely match is a decade off (1792 when the family bible claims 1782, both in October but on different days, so left wondering). that family is of Jared Chittenden and Elizabeth Lusk and their children, of which there is a Sally, b. 3 Oct 1792, no spouse listed, but there's no Polly, not by nickname or real name. there's a Mary C. but she died at age 17 and we know our Polly was having children after Mary died. so perhaps they are of a different Chittenden branch all together.
can someone enlighten me regarding the NE Chittendens, how many branches there are, and where to look?

many thanks for this. it is why I run up against the genealogies claiming my Sally and Polly Chittenden are Solomon's and Susanna's children, when my Polly married Azariah Ross. every time I try to verify Solomon and Susannah as their parents, I come up with Polly marrying Elias. my Polly and Sally settled in early Portage Co., Ohio, with Sally m. to John Hall Whittlesey and Polly to the afore-mentioned Azariah Ross. I've tried to get the people who put Solomon and Susannah as their parents to correct that but I'm being ignored, even though I present the facts that seem to prove that the relationship doesn't exist. I've never found out their parentage. I'm within reach of the Chittenden book, but for some reason can't access my password to the site, so my hands are tied until the issue ( technical one) is straitened out.

I'm a descendant of this line. My ancestor was adopted by Joseph Hart Chittenden, in Orwell, VT, who was a son of Solomon Chittenden. My ancestor DeWitt Clinton Chittenden, then married Adelia Sheldon, the daughter of Sally Chittenden and John Sheldon.
One of my main sources was the information from the book:
Early History of the Town of Hopkinton
Carlton Elisha Sanford
The Bartlett Press, Boston Massachusetts 1903
It is now available free in PDF and other formats online.
http://books.google.com/books/about/Early_History_of_the_Town_of_Hopkinto...
I downloaded the PDF. The family listing for Solomon Chittenden begins on page 462, but is shown as on page 543 of the PDF that I downloaded.
I've also gone to Orwell, VT and surrounding villages and researched in the various village archives there. It was in Orwell where I found the information to confirm Polly as wife of Elias Dudley Wilcox. This was of special interest to me as Elias and Polly were the first of the family to travel to Fayette County, Iowa; which eventually led to DeWitt Clinton Chittenden settling there. Unfortunately, at the time I did that research, I was early on in my work with genealogy, and did not keep as good of records on sources as I should have.
My computer desktop image is of the scene of the Green Mountains from the site of the Mountain View Cemetery in Orwell.

Solomon Chittenden and Susannah Sanford are the parents of Sally b. 9 Oct 1782 and Polly Chittenden? I keep seeing this, with somewhat suspicious dates and places, and no documentation what so ever, so someone please show me the documentation for this.
