This is what I have compiled on French from various readings, and research I have done. Not much factual information out there on him.
There is almost nothing known about Jim "Big Jim" French. The date and location of his birth are unknown, but presumed to be around 1855. In a interview with Regulator Frank Coe that took place in 1927 Coe said that Big Jim was half Cherokee Indian. French was an especially cold blooded killer, known to drink a lot and kill with no qualm. He was involved in most of the battles of the Lincoln County War and was one of the six Regulators that assassinated Sheriff William Brady and Deputy George Hindman. He was shot in the thigh by the same bullet that had wounded Billy The Kid, When The Kid and the other four escaped French remained behind to be bandaged up by the Tunstall store clerk, Sam Corbet. Big Jim was also in the McSween house during that five day battle. After the war Big Jim French disappeared. There are four versions his fate after Lincoln County. First, that he was shot and killed near Lincoln on 21 June 1879. This version has been proven false as he wrot!
e a letter to Sam Corbet in late 1878 from Keota, Indian Territory. Second is that he vanished into South America. Third, that he was shot and killed during a store robbery at Catoosa, Oklahoma in 1895. Fourth, that he was shot and killed in 1924. Most feel number three the most likely, given that he wrote from Keota, near Catoosa, late in 1878.
