Name: Benjamin Bourland
Born: 6 Jan 1779
Died: 5 Jun 1851
Buried: Delta County
Location: NOT PLOTTED
Notes: Information from an unpublished draft manuscript titled NORTHEAST
TEXAS PIONEERS 1800-1877, copyright by Skipper Steely, 1989, Paris, TX: A
part of his family came from Kentucky to Texas. No clear reason for the
removal of the family to northeast Texas is construed except that Bourland
was born near many future Red River pioneers, and some friends of his from
Tennessee moved to the Texas region, including the Stout family. ^Born in
Wilkes County, NC, Bourland had 19 children by two wives, apparently 13 by
his first wife named Nancy, whom he married in about 1798. The family moved
through Tennessee to Hopkins County, Kentucky by 1803. Benjamin Sr. married
second to a lady names Martha about 1828. Benjamin probably came to Texas in
about 1839 or 1840, after his sons James, William Howard, and Benjamin Jr.
arrived. His last child born in Kentucky was Martha in 1839. ^Benjamin is
buried in a cemetery south of the north Sulphur Fork on the Lamar-Fannin
County line. ^Information is available on some of Benjamin's sons. James,
John McElroy and William H. Bourland were with Ed Tarrant at the Village
Creek attack in 1841. ^Benjamin Jr. married Caliborne Chisum's daughter,
Nancy, in 1839. They had at least three daughters: Cinthia A., who married
J. D. Sellers; Mary Ella, who married Lawrence W. Grave; and Nancy, who
married a man named Scott and the Rev. Lewis Holland. ^Born apparently in
South Carolina, or some say Wealley Co. TN, James (1801-1873) married
Catherine Wells in 1822. They moved from Kentucky back to Weakley Co., where
he owned a race track with Nathaniel Herbert and Albert Early, and
apparently bought and sold slaves and horses. James Bourland came to Texas
according to land records, in 1836. He surveyed land as a vocation, and
sometime in 1837 chose a piece for himself on the North Sulphur River
southwest of Roxton. In 1842 he was named as collector of import duties for
the Red River District. In 1846 he was elected to represent Fannin, Lamar,
Red River and Bowie Counties. He was re-elected for a second term. In 1847
James Bourland also received a land certificate for helping build or survey
the Central National Road, which ran through part of the Bourland property.
^James Bourland served in the Mexican War, and was an incorporator of the
Memphis El Paso and Pacific Railroad. By 1853 he had moved to Delaware Bend
in Cooke County. In 1858 he raised a company to stop Indian depredations.
^At the onset of the Civil War, James Bourland served as a member of Young's
11th Texas Regiment, but later organized the 2nd Frontier Regiment,
Bourland's Texas Cavalry. In 1862 he was also named provost Marshall of
Cooke County. In 1864 Indian problems became very serious, and Bourland led
a group in pursuit that fall. Most of all, James Bourland is known for his
part in the Gainesville Hangings. He is buried in the Orlena Cemetery. ^Born
in Kentucky in 1811, William H. Bourland (1811-1860) married first to Rachel
C. Davis of Trigg Co., KY., then second to an Indian named Caroline Willis,
daughter of Amanda Love and James Willis of Colbert, OK. Before coming to
Texas William was first district clerk of Holly Springs, MS. He represented
Lamar County from 1843-1845 as a member of the House of Representatives in
the 8th and 9th Texas Congress. In the last year of this term he introduced
a bill to incorporate Paris. ^After annexation to the U.S., he served in the
House from 1846-1845, and then represented Grayson Co. in the 5th
Legislature from 1853-1854. He also mustered in the Mexican War in Gillet's
Company, Hay's Mounted Volunteers. He may have moved north of the Red River
for a short time into his wife's Chickasaw Nation home. However, he died at
his home at Cedar Mills near Dexter, Cooke Co., TX. He had been a very
active member of the Friendship Masonic Lodge No. 16 in Clarksville and in
Lodge No. 27 in Paris. Resources: 'Biographies of the Texan Conventions and

Good morning List,

Chisholm form the Newnans Lake area. In her younger years she farmed along
with her parents. Oral history has her living in Detroit Michigan Cora died

>Dog Tags Found In Viet Nam
>
>On a recent "Today Show" there was a story about two men who went
>to Hanoi on a business trip. The men encountered a guy selling old GI
>dog tags from US servicemen who were killed during the Viet Nam War.
>They were disgusted by the thought of this man profiting from the sale
>of
>these tags. Upon returning to the U.S., they decided to go back to
>Viet Nam and purchase ALL the dog tags. They did so, paying 19 cents
>per tag! They brought home several hundred tags. The plan is to return
>the tags to surviving family members, when they can find them. The
>process has already begun with one set being turned over to a grieving
>Mom on July 4th, (coincidentally, it was on her birthday)!
>
>These two men have set up a website, "http://www.founddogtags.com"
>listing the names of all those whose tags they purchased.
>
>If you lost friends, family, or know of someone who lost a loved one
>in Viet Nam, I suggest you check out this website. If you recognize a
>name, there's an e-mail address to contact these two men and to help
>in their efforts to return the dogtag to it's rightful survivor. I'm
>sure a
>family member would be eternally grateful to have such an important
>item returned. Please help by checking this website. And please send
>the website address to everyone you know. The more people who
>see the lists, the greater the chance of returning ALL the tags to those
>
>who lost loved ones in Viet Nam!
