Hello Michael Hendrix. I received my Chism Family Association newsletter
today and thought some of you might be interested in the information I
found. The Association has a very extensive mailing list and information on
Chisms. My Chism was spelled Chism in Kentucky but when they got to Texas
they were Chisum. If you contact:
Tammy Chisholm, Editor
2508 S. 35th Street
Lincoln, NE 68506-6621
E-mail tc4kidz(a)alltel.net
I am sure she would give you information. Also if you would like to join the
Asso.

A $4.00 Membership fee plus optionals Genealogical research, Web site fund,
Landmark Maintenance, and Archives Fund would cost you a whopping $10.00 per
year. I think that is very nominal for all the benefits you can get.

Hi Michael,
My husbands family is also of the John Chisum and
Ellender Gillington line. They have always said that
there is Indian blood in the Chisum line. I know his
ggreatgrandmothers picture she loos Indian, but so far
I haven't been able to prove it. So don't feel alone
in the tails of Indian in the family lines.

Cathy,
Thanks for the welcome. Actually, I am a previous list member who has
taken some time off the list. I am connected to the Chisum family in a
couple of ways.
The first connection is one probably everyone is familiar with and
that is Anna Chisum, wife of John Walling, Sr. I descend from their
son James Walling, Sr., James Walling, Jr. and his dau. Martha Alice
Walling who married my grgrandfather George Washington Hendrix in 1882
in Limestone Co., TX. Anna Chisum has always been a bit of a mystery
to me, because family tradition has always held that she was part
Indian. In 1908, Walling family members signed statements saying that
she was either 1/2 or 1/4 Cherokee Indian. However, most genealogies
have placed her in the descent of the VA Chisum families through John
Chisum and Ellender Gillington. Does anyone have any new information
that could shed some more light on this?
The second connection is a bit more "iffy". Rowland researchers in MS
have established (largely from tradition) that Allen Rowland's wife
was Flora Ann Chisholm/Chisum. Allen Rowland has also been established
(by these same Rowland researchers using the same traditions) as the
father of Sarah Ann Rowland who married John L. Magee ca 1842 in MS.
These are my grgrgrandparents who came to TX ca 1868, eventually
settling in Limestone Co., TX. Flora Ann Chisum (b: ca 1803, NC) may
have been the oldest child born to Isham Chisum and Permelia Roberts.
This has not been established to my satisfaction, as yet. I would be
very interested in hearing from any of the Isham Chisum crowd
concerning this possibility.
Lastly, since I have opened this Isham Chisum door, there is another
question that has been bothering me. In his "History of Limestone Co.,
TX", Hampton Steele mentions that John and J. R. Chisum were early
settlers of Limestone Co. on Steele's Creek in 1855. He should have
been familiar with these families since he married one of their
daughters. He sketches out the children of J. R. Chisum and they look
very much like the family I have seen given for Isham Russell Chisum,
who died in 1869 in Limestone Co. and is buried in the Tidwell Cem.
there. Did Hampton Steele really mean J. R. or could he have meant I.
R. Chisum?
I apologize for taking up so much space with these issues, some of
which may have been discussed since my abscence. However, these are my
Chisum connections, as shaky as they are.
Michael K. Hendrix
Pasadena, TX
Assuming TX and NM. Supposedly, the Chisum (not Chisholm) Trail was named
for someone in their line. Grandma alsways told me Margaret's father, but
I'm pretty sure that is not accurate.

Don't have much information on my line. Looking for a connection to a
brother and sister, Margaret and Milton Chisum, that both married into me
Burke line. These would be my 2nd gr.grandmother and her brother. Milton
was also my grandmother's first husband, and my program lists him as my 2nd
gr.granduncle.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated.

There is a very good website at support(a)FamilyHistory.com with a lot of
Chishom/Chism information. Your names don't match with what I have but since
my James didn't show up on records until 1810 anything could be possible.
That was when he married at 23 years old. I wish you luck. Carolyn

This is to continue on with my Elijah Kaufman Chisum family line. This is
what I have been able to discover about John Madison Chisum.
1850 Cherokee Co., TX John Madison Chisum appears in his father's
household:
E. CHISON 34 TN
Delilah 30 IN
Mary E. 7 TX
William E. 5 TX
John Madison 3 TX
India J. 8/12 TX
William GEORGE 66 VA
Delilia 62 SC
Eliza 21 IN
J.J. GEORGE 18 IN
Clarinda Chapman 15 TN
John W. Chapman 12 TN
Lua TAYEA 33 Norway
1860 Limestone Co., TX:
Elijah CHISUM 44 TN
Delila 40 IN
William E. 15 TX
J.M. 13 TX
J.J. (India) 10 TX
J.E. 8 TX
H.S. (Hiram) 6 TX
R.A. (Rhoda) 3 TX
G.W. (George) 1 TX
Delila GEORGE 71 SC
About 1866 he must have married his first wife
16 June 1867, b. of Dau. Mary Delila Chisum, her death certificate lists her
place of birth as Limestone Co., TX
In 1870 I find this census record which is the closest one that I have found
to his information:
1870 Wise Co., TX #194
John CHISSUM 27 b. MS
Louisa 21 b. MO
Mary 3 b. TX
It is assumed that Mary's mother died soon after her birth.
10 Dec 1876, John married Parthenia Anne Knapp in Cooke Co., TX
22 Oct 1877 b. of son William Albert Chisum
sometime between 1877 and 1880, John Madison Chisum probably died. It is
unknown where William Albert was born. Parthenia remarried a Tom Quaid. No
one knows where this marriage occurred or exactly when. They had several
children together.
A descendant of William Albert Chisum had family rumors that John Madison
died about March of 1878. She thought that he might have died in a lumber
mill accident. She had that the death may have occurred in Jack Co., TX.
None of these rumors are confirmed.
I would appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give me on this
family. I would especially like to know who John Madison Chisum's first
wife was and when and where he died and where he is buried.
Thank you for your help!
Tammy

Kim,
I don't know if this will help or not, but I thought it was worth
mentioning. All of this will need to be verified, but maybe it is a lead
for you.
Archie Ingram Bass b. Jan 13, 1904 d. July 8, 1966 married Alma Laura
Chisum. Alma was b. Nov 1, 1903 and d. Sep 7, 1972. They are both buried
in the Simpson's Campground Cem. in Nacogdoches Co., TX. Alma was the
daughter of Lee Jackson Chisum and Mary Alberta Alders. They were all in
the Nacogdoches Co., TX area. I don't have very much more on the children
of these people. I don't have a Milton and Margaret in my file, but they
would probably be in the next generation. I do have some more on the older
generations. John Simpson Chisum "Cow John" would have been Lee Jackson's
3rd cousin.
Hope this helps a bit,
Tammy

The Chism Trail was supposedly named for John Chisum who probably owned 3/4
of New Mexico or Jesse Chisholm whose mother I am told was Cherokee. Maybe
this will help get you farther back.

I'm looking for a brother and sister: Milton and Margaret Chisum. Margaret
was my great grandmother and Milton my great granduncle, but also my
grandmother's first husband. (I'm not sure which relation would take
precedence.) I did not know him as my grandfather...
Dad told me that they travelled the Chisum (not Chisholm) Trail with the
Bass Family, and that the family legend is that the Trail was named after
her father (I think maybe a close male relative).
Any help is greatly appreciated.
