Looking for information on Ellender Nellie Chism and her parents, Benjamin Elisha Chism and Springflower Dark. Ellender Nellie Chism supposedly was born in Kentucky and died in 1870 in Rocky Bayou, Izard County, Arkansas. She married John A. Walker who died in 1850 in Rocky Bayou, Izard County, Arkansas.
I have been story a family story that stated that my great-grandmother Nora Leah Uhles was a descendant of a Nellie Chism. I have found in the past few weeks that Nora was listed in the 1880 census for Izard County with her mother, Ellen Walker under the name of Oulds. Also listed were two of her siblings that her mother had with a Joseph Cook. John Mathias Cook and Sarah.
Ellen married a William Melton and had two sons, Clarence and Oscar Melton.
Oscar was b. in Arkansas and there is some confliction as to where he died. I have two different places. Imperial County, California and Izard County, Arkansas. He died in 1972. His brother Clarence was born in 1891 in Ark and d. 29 May 1966 in Drew County, Arkansas.
Nora Leah Uhles/Uhls/Oulds married a Samuel Eskridge Kenner in 1903 in Madison County, Arkansas and they soon moved to Oklahoma. They lived in several places in Oklahoma and then in the late 1930's moved out the California. I an trying to document Ellender Nellie Chism and husband John A. Walker and Ellender Nellie Chism's parents.
Thanks for your help
Helen Parker

I just discovered this post concerning P.L. Chism. This is the first I have heard about any discussion concerning a historical marker for Mr. Chism, but think it is an excellent idea. If you check on Facebook at the "Remember in Palestine...." or "Palestine, Texas Memories" or even "Elkhart Alumni" pages, I think you would find a multitude of former students that remember Mr. Chism and would support any effort to have a marker dedicated in his name. Please feel free to contact me. I will add any information I discover.
