Deed Record. Also the Will of Elisha Chisum of Lawrence county, Ark. Census
records. And possible children of Elisha Chism first married to Elizabeth
Walden 1787, Lincoln county, Kentucky, second wife Winny also known as
Winnifred. And Spring Creek Church records regarding Elijah Chism, Lucy
Clairborn Chisum and Winny Chism. The deed mentions eight children of John
and Eleanor Chism not twenty two children as other researchers have stated
and has written this to be in stone is note true! I am hoping someone may
prove or disprove Elisha Chisum son of John Chisum of Amelia county, VA.
Rumors state he died in Christian county, Kentucky and his buried there.
That the Elisha Chisum will of Lawrence county, Ark. Is a son of Elisha
Chisum and his wife Winny. But the age fits for this to be the son of John
Chisum of Amelia. Also after 1830, There is another Elisha Chisum living in
Lawrence county on the tax list. Winny went to Overton county, TN. 1840
living as a widow, then she came back to Ark. 1850, Randolph county, Ark.
Living with a son named Russell born TN. Some researchers think Winny's last
name was Russell. A Captain William Russell was living in that area of
Tennessee at the time the Chisum's were there. I would also like to ask if
any direct descendants of these Chisums, John, Elijah, Elisha, Absalom and
Obadiah have joined the Chisum DNA project and had their DNA tested? I have
included various records regarding this family and want to clarify that John
and Eleanor Gillentine Chisum did not have twenty two children. Vickie Lomon
The handwritten recorded deed which is reproduced on the preceding four

photocopied and transcribed it as shown in typed wording that is reproduced
on this page and four preceding pages. In this deed it named Eleanor Chisum
( who married John Chisum of Amelia county., VA.) and either of their
children and four of their son-in-laws. Two other children are not named but
their husbands are. The children in the order of ther age are John, James,
Elizabeth {not Names" who married John Estes, Absalomon, Elijah, Elisha,
Chloe{mot Manes} who married John C. May, Obadiah Chisum, Pracilla {Chisum"

the father of James Chism who married Mary Howard. In addition this deed
names eleven of the children of John Estes and Elizabeth Chism Estes. Along
with two of their sons-in-laws. Fifteen of those named in the deed were
living in 1835, and the 13 who were deceases are shown with words " the

The elder Elisha's parents are clearly identified when you look at this

HISTORY OF ROARING RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH
(Overton County, Tennessee)
This was one of the oldest churches constituted in the Upper Cumberland
Region of Tennessee. We are not able to ascertain the exact date of the
constitution of this old church. In the records of the Green River
Association we find that it was in working order July 25, 1801. Everything
seems to indicate that it was constituted about 1800 from members of the
Holston Baptist Association of East Tennessee.
Elijah Chism was a messenger in 1798 from the Powels Valley Baptist Church
to the Holston Association. This same church dismissed 23 members by letter
between 1799 and 1800. At least part of these members came to the Roaring
River Church. Elijah Chism appears with the Roaring River Church in 1803.
Joseph Stewart, father of Elder Jesse Stewart, left Jefferson County, in the
Holston Valley, sometime after August 1796. He appears as one of the first
messengers from the Roaring River Church.
Other early members included:
Col. Stephen Copeland, who commanded the Third Tennessee Reg't. in the War
of 1812; John Raney who married Elizabeth Stewart, sister to Elder Jesse
Stewart; Benjamin and Samuel Stewart, brothers of Elder Jesse Stewart;
Benjamin K. and Rev. J. G. Stewart, sons of Samuel Stewart; and Stephen
Mayfield, an early settler from South Carolina whose daughter, Mary, claimed
to be the first female child born in the Livingston area.
Roaring River Church remained a member of the Green River Association until
1804. In 1805, when the Stockton Valley Association was constituted, Roaring
River fell within the boundary of the latter and remained a member of that
fraternity for many years.
About 1827, Elder Jesse Stewart moved his membership to the Caney Ridge
Church in Overton County. He remained a member of this church for a few
years and then moved back to Roaring River.
J. H. Grime in his History of Middle Tennessee Baptists, said of Elder
Stewart:
"I remember him as a feeble old man and very badly palsied. He is perhaps
the first minister I remember to have seen, though I have no recollection of
hearing him preach. It seems that I can now feel his trembling hand on my
head and hear his faltering voice as he pronounces his blessings upon a
white-haired boy. It is said he was a good, old-fashioned preacher."
About 1841, many of the churches in the Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee
divided over "predestination." Those who were predestinarian in belief
changed their names from "United Baptists" to "Regular Baptists."
In the records of the Spring Creek Baptist Church in April 1841 we find this
entry: "Renounce United - become Regular," and in July 1842 this same church
excluded several members for adhering to the "principles" of the Stockton
Valley United Baptist Association.
Every effort made to bring about reconciliation failed. The membership
wrangled and disputed, getting farther apart all the time. Elder Jesse
Stewart, with the minority of the Roaring River Church took a stand for the
United Baptists. Consequently, Elder Stewart was excluded from the church.
The general procedure, for that day, was for the name of any excluded
minister to be published in the next minutes of the association. Roaring
River hadn't pulled away from the Stockton Valley Association yet, and Elder
Stewart's name appeared in the 1843 minutes, under the 6th order of
business:
"Roaring River Church informs this Association that Elder Jesse Stewart is
excluded from the fellowship of said church and that his credentials have
been legally demanded and he refused to give them up."
The year following Elder Stewart's exclusion, this entry was made in the
minutes of the Stockton Valley Association:
1844 - "This Association drops Roaring River Church out of her body she
having refused to represent herself with us."
This was the beginning of sorrows for the old church. It divided into three
parts. The majority of the church went to the "Caney Fork Association of Old
Baptists," better known as the Primitive or Regular Baptists. A second
faction joined the Freedom Association about 1847, and dissolved after a few
years. The third party organized the Jirah Baptist Church near Okalonia,
Tennessee and united with the Stockton Valley United Baptist Association in
1851. They changed the name of the church to Okalonia Baptist Church in 1867
and to West Union Baptist Church in 1886.

This will only mentions a son, Washington Childers/Chism, by name, but it
does indicate there were other children, "...further to divide and To

One need also notice that Benjamin Chism had a son named Elisha and so did
John Walker, Jr.
Hello, nice to meet you, as of now, I don't know anything about a Sarah
Elizabeth Chism. You mentioned her being born about 1840?
So far this is what I know about our Chism line
Elisha Chism born about 1746,Son of John and Elleanor Gillentine Chisum of
Amelia county, Va. Elisha was married twice once to Elizabeth Walden 1787,
Lincoln county, Kentucky, second wife was Wenny.
Elisha moved to Lawrence county, ARk. 1820, he is on the census, he died in
1827, leaving a will nameing his wife Wenny.
Wenny migrated to Izard county, Ark. about 1831, she is in the book Pioneers
and Makers of Ark. she is one of nine from Izard.
She migrated to Izard with a son named Benjamin Chism born 1796, Benjamin
first was in Independence then he migrated to Izard county and remained
there until sometime after 1861, he and his sons were all there on the
voters poll tax list. Benjamin, James and William (Bill) Chism. Anyway on
the 1850 census
Benjamin had a wife name Polly born 1803 NC.
She was Polly Walker daughter of John Adam Walker and Elizabeth Blair.
They had children
Polly and Benjamin had children Isham, Henderson, Washington, James,
Benjamin, Elisha, Elizabeth, Wenny and William Chism born 1827. They are all
listed on the 1850 census Izard county.
So far children of Elisha Chism born 1746 are
Leticia who married Dabney wade woodson
Elleanor Nellie who married JOhn Adam Walker Jr.
Elizabeth Chism who was born 1794 who married a Gray.
Simeon
George Washington Chism who was married 3 times, to Lankford, Burgess and
Jane Knighton, two known children of knighton and george, Christopher Green
Chism and Elisha.
Also, one thing to remember when researching the arkansas Chisholms. The
cherokee Chisholms John D. , ignatious and his brothers were in ARk. as
early as 1812, they moved to Fort Gibson, Oklahoma by 1828.
Our Chism line arrived here in Ark. About 1819 or a little before that time
era.
We have established that Eleanor Gillington/Gillentine married John Chism.
That they had a daughter Elizabeth who married John Estes.
These facts prove that the Warren County, Ky, abstract for John and Eleanor
Chism are the one in the same.
>From that abstract we know more of the Estes heirs; William Estes, Chism
Estes, Elijah Estes, Moses Estes, Abraham Estes, and Joseph Estes.
That other heirs were Elisha Chism and his brothers Elijah, John, James and
Obediah.
Although I have seen no proof, we should remain open to the possibility that
the Estes of Izard County are related to this family.
Elijah Chism, the brother of Elisha, had a son-in-law Jesse Dodson who also
had heirs in Izard and Fulton County.
Based on these and other notes that I will detail elsewhere, I believe it is
very likely that the Chisms who married into the Gray and Walker families in
Arkansas were the children of Elisha and Winnifred Chism. That there may
have been some confusion in the retelling of oral history between Benjamin
Chism and his father. If the Happy Kendrick story is true it is yet to be
proven......RDH
