This is a tough one. Since there is much disagreement over the origin of the name, You will run into a lot of opinions.
Not all surnames can be 'defined' as being from a root word.
Some believe the name is derived from the surname Chisholm, and others think it is from something altogether independent.
There are a lot of sound-alike (phonetically similar) names used and they may be searched by checking the surname against its Soundex Code. (C250) Soundex is a system used in past censuses to group names that are phonetically similar. You should also consider the soundex codes that sound like C, S250, and Z250.
Names evolve, and sometimes they come from unusual sources that you wouldn't think of, immediately.
An example would be my S250 surname, Scism. Scism is often written in past documents as Schism, and Cism, Chism and about 200 more spellings, which probably coincide with some Chism and Chisholm misspellings.
Research is indicating that "Scism" is derived and evolved from vanderChijs, meaning "from Chijs", which is a village in Belgium, there is possibilty that Chism can be from the same source, anyone who left that village, or something similar. Nobody knows for certain. It probably dates from before surnames were firmly established, as a name that described where people came from, or what they did as a job.
Names usually develop from those things, or some other description of a person, that makes him different from others.

Annual of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention 1955 One Hundred Second Annual Session: "Let my people go." Held at Immanuel Baptist Church, Little Rock, Arkansas, November 15-17, 1955.
An attractive self-published, professionally printed 6" x 9" paper cover booklet of 188 pages, in "Good minus" condition.
To set the stage, recall the times of post- the United States Supreme Court's 1954 decision in "Brown v. Board of Education," i.e., in the matter of DESEGREGATION: more particularly, the LITTLE ROCK NINE and the Little Rock, Arkansas Central High School desegregation crisis in 1957. This is remarkable. You are holding scarcely known history in your hand; and, genealogically, you are exploring the stirrings of intergenerational discord, in their stories, by the names you know, at a real time, at a real place, in a very real context.
Here is a tiny sampling:
a. Mr. and Mrs. Howard NIX responded to the invitation to dedicate themselves to the work of missionaries on some foreign field.
b. W. H. OWEN, of Pine Bluff, presented the report on the Bottoms Baptist Orphanage. Superintendent SEEFELDT presented C. H. SEATON and the Orphanage choir. Enlarged pictures of the Orphanage buildings were shown. And the work of the Home was presented through the testimonies of Henrietta ROBERTS, Edna LUSK, Phyllis RAY, Carolyn CHILDS, and Sam CHISM.
c. H. E. WILLIAMS, President of Southern College, reported to the Convention through the testimonies of Gloria LUM of Canton, China and Denato LOPEZ of Mexico.
d. Faculty of Youth Music Camp in the summer for 109 young people at Ouachita Baptist College were: Mr. and Mrs. Dwight PHILLIPS of Texarkana, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Lecil GIBSON of El Dorado, Norman LERCH of DeWitt, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest MOSLEY of Arkadelphia, Alden PETERSON of North Little Rock, Anne SUGG of Helena, Mr. and Mrs. Joe WALTERS of Pine Bluff, and several others.
e. Deceased Ministers [in 1955]: BRUMBELOW, A. L., BURNSIDE, L. B., DAVIS, C. G., JACKSON, W. E., KELLER, Nathan, MARSH, H. E., TIBBELS, Charles D.
